It''s difficult to compare because one has larger lobes while the other has skinny lobes. The best thing to do is to actually draw the mm circles as suggested and see for yourself which size you think is best.

I hear ya Gypsy & Chrono. I''ve been searching for mm rules online & haven''t gotten the right thing get. Also: AM HORRIBLE ARTIST. If I could just somehow shrink the cartier picture down so the stones are at the .05 size (2.4mm) and then cut THAT out & stick it on my ear I would TOTALLY post that ridiculous sight!

Could you ask Cartier how many total carats are in those earrings? Surely that''s a reasonable question from a potential customer, yes?

I did .. they haven''t responded NEARLY as quickly as they did when I asked "how much"?

That''s a good one.

Girl, having a ruler in mm or even a stencil of circles in mm is a requirement for every regular Pricescoper.

Okay ... so I''ve done some work. Some ridiculous, ridiculous work. I shrunk down the inspiration picture to what I thought was "actual size" ... and then measured the "stones" with a printed off internet mm tape measure. The "stones" in the paper earring are about 2.4mm (.05ct). The dimensions of the paper earring as a whole are approx 9mm L x 8mm wide. Which *almost* makes sense.

It makes sense width wise ... 1mm bezel+2.5mm stone+1mm middle+2.5mm stone+ 1mm bezel = 8mm
It almost makes sense lengthwise 1mm beze +2.5mm stone + space of 2.5mm stone+ 2.5mm stone + 1mm bezel = 9.5mm

Okay -- my question is ... does this look like the "right" scale on my fat ear. (Excuse the sweat ... its hot hot hot today/tonight)

Closer ... ewwwww.

Bonus shot of my paper earring friend & my Xmas earrings I can''t remember if I ever posted. Maybe not an earshot. Anyhoo....

And, of course, the money shot ... the ear compare. My ear. Jennifer Garner''s ear. My free paper bauble. Her 3K freebies. (Eh, maybe she bought ''em. Whatever.)

It looks really close to me! I wish I could do one of those fancy side-by-side pics for ya, but I don't know how

edt: posted before that was up! hehe

If you're going for the Jennifer Gardner look, proportionally, I'd say it's right on. I might

even go to 6 pointers, just for a little more presence. But then again I'm discovering that I'm a bling wh*re. They are lovely with 5 pointers, though. I wouldn't go smaller.

BTW Deco, this belongs in the "You know your a PSer when...." top ten.

Hee! My DH thought I was NUTZO but that''s nothing new. He wanted to slap them on with a whole piece of tape across the front and I''m like NO!!! So I cut a teensy tiny strip & made a loop & stuck it to the back of the earring. It held long enough to get some snaps at least. I knew my PSers would laugh even LOUDER at this whole shebang if I''d had a big ol'' strip of tape plastering them to the side of my head.

Sweet! Whew that took some doing. I may earn a spot in the Top Ten yet.

Yes, yes we would have. And you denied us this why?

Your "cheap imitation" looks pretty darn close. I think that would be a nice size.

what a fun project

WELL THE PLOT THICKENS

Heard back from Cartier and the inspiration pieces have a TCW of ..... (drumroll pls) .... .29. So, what the heck?? I went to sleep last night totally convinced I'd cracked the code. But - gah! I guess they are .03s? .29/8 = .036?? I knew basic math would come in handy some day ... why did I daydream through it?

So, yeah, my paper dealies looked pretty close -- I guess there's more metal than I assumed? Gonna give it some thought. Pls. feel free to weigh in w/yours

ETA: Or maybe I should round up & they are .04s.

The Cartier earrings aren''t bezel set, they look bead set. Personally, I''d go with Sally too, she does amazing work, and her prices would be the lowest. I''ve had her source diamonds for me for other projects, and they were gorgeous! But she won''t copy a design exactly, as it''s a copyright issue. She''ll have to change the design a bit. Hope you get the perfect pair of earrings!

I still say 5 pointers which isn’t a whole larger than 4 pointers anyway. Your cut and paste looks quite proportional compared to the Gardner ear shot.

You''re right ... the diamonds themselves are bead set ... I guess I don''t know the term for the ridge around the whole thing that acts like a border? The same thing happens on my wedding ring -- there''s a metal border around a tray & inside the little trays there are bead set diamonds. Must like that look!

I do admire Sally''s work & wouldn''t mind modifications to keep clear of copyright issues. I need to send her some more info, but she seemed into it so far. I''ve also approached my favorite local jewelry designer to see what she thinks. That''s it though. If I can''t solve this puzzle one of three ways, its not solvable!

OMG! Those earrings you made are gorgeous! Where do I get such a pair?
30.gif

Seriously, scale looks great to me and I really love the earrings. I''ll be following along on this one!

Sorry I keep checking in for chuckles. Deco this was seriously one for the books. I can''t wait for the result.

Deco~how did you feel when you were wearing the Cartier earrings? Please be specific. okthxbi
9.gif
The reason I ask is that when I purchased my rolling ring, it did make a difference to me that it was the Cartier Trinity. It's an iconic ring and I wanted the original piece. I'm checking to see if you have feelings about these specific earrings from Cartier. If you do, I would pay attention to that. If not, then let's party on!! The earrings are very pretty, either way. You did fine work with the paper ones, as well

Hi Marian,
You know, I''ve never tried on the Cartier ones! Though I go into NYC pretty regularly I haven''t yet stopped by Cartier. I''m considering *not* trying on the originals because then I won''t be so attached to *them* knowwhatimean? If it was an iconic piece (like the rolling rings or VanCleef''s alhambra stuff) I would see more value in "the original" ... things like the DBY stuff or bezel studs just don''t seem as "iconic" to me & I''d be happy with alternative versions. Thinking this lotus petal four stone design could be just as pretty & loveable to me in any number of levels of execution because of the 1) delicate scale 2) color metal 3) bit of bling. I actually loved them before I even *knew* they were Cartier. The original shots I saw of them they were only labeled as Jennifer Garner''s "own" earrings. It took some sleuthing to even find out who makes the originals.

What do you guys think? Would you go try on the Cartier pair if you knew 100% you''d never pay 3K for them? Even if you were afraid it''ll make you compare any future iteration of them to the originals?

No, I wouldn't in this case, Deco. For the reasons you stated, and also because you feel in love with them from a picture. You just want some similar and lovely earrings. That's a good thing and I understand it totally. You don't need or want Cartier, so why risk not liking the 'inspired by' earrings you do get.

On the other hand, I've been in love with the simplier designs of a few Jazz and Bubbles and Swing collection pieces from pics for a while. I went into Tiffany and wasn't impressed by them in person. I realized A) wow that's not a whole lot o' bling for the money and B) I prefer the 'inspired by' pieces I've seen floating around better. Made me feel great about future 'non-brand' and "inspired by' pieces. Plus I put by Pendant next to a couple of their pendants. And you know what... my pendant's quality and the diamonds blew theirs out of the water. Not to mention the price tags. Even the Tiffany guy was like... where did you get that pendant, and asked to see it and louped it and told me I had a special and very high quality piece. Which I knew. So... FWIW, going to Cartier might make you appreciate your 'inspired by' earrings more if they end up being all that you want them to be.

I like Cartier's work though. And personally I consider it superior to Tiffany's by a lot. Cartier is one of my favorite stores to go into (the SF branch not the Palo Alto) because of the service and the workmanship on thier pieces. Though frequently their designs aren't to my personal taste.

HI:

Why not--what''s the harm? Those earrings are there for people to get an idea of presence/scope/asethetic. I went into Cartier and tried on a 7 carat ring--with no intention of ever buying the same. It was a pleasure!

They may not be your cup of tea anyway---and while you are in NYC, hit T & C'' s and see those "other" bargoon pieces!

Do you think you would get attached to them if you tried them on? If not, go for it. If so, avoid them like the plague. You're right about the "iconic" status. I don't think these earrings are associated with a well known collection. I tried on a $150,000 diamond ring at my jeweler's today. Doesn't mean I'm going to buy it

That''s the thing ... I can''t TELL if I''d get attached or if it would affect my feelings about an inspiration version! I first saw the particular design of wedding ring I wanted at a vendor who then couldn''t remember where he got it, so couldn''t order it for me. Then I later found an online vendor of a very similar (possibly the same) ring. We ordered that & it is every bit as awesome as that first one I found -- but that''s not the same as creating a new design from an inspiration piece. Puzzlement. Will think on it. Thanks for your advice! Did you take pix at your jewelers??
