Hi all!

I recently bought a preloved marquise that's about 0.25 ct with the intention of having it set east-west in a milgrain bezel pendant on a pretty short chain (hollow of the neck, ~15"). I reached out to a local bench to get a quote, and they responded back that this is not a 'feasible' design due to the potential for flipping. I asked about sliding vs. fixed, single vs double attachment point, etc and they seem very adamant that I should not pursue this design choice.

Am I crazy for thinking this isn't true? I have seen, obviously, many examples of rounds in the same design, but also examples of ovals which I feel would have roughly the same weight distribution/profile. My next thought is to reach out to BGD to inquire about a modified Barbara setting, but want to check in here for your opinions first.

Do you think this is a 'feasible' setting choice? I'm already pretty full up on my finger real estate as I don't rotate at all, so don't want to fall back to that option.

Indicative photo provided here, though obviously with different materials.

Thanks!

I think what you want could be made in such a way that flipping is minimized, but... from what I've read here, the propensity for a single-stone pendant to flip depends partially on where it sits on the neck. I'm guessing that sitting right in the hollow of the neck is going to result in more flipping than sitting just below, on the more stable surface provided by the top of the rib cage.

Anyhow, I'm thinking that a slider style setting with the through-points located about halfway between the thickest and widest parts of the stone should be pretty stable. Kind of like this, but of course using a marquise rather than an oval...

Thank you VRBeauty!!

Your encouragement is exactly what I needed to move to a second opinion w/ BGD. I'll report back with their thoughts and, hopefully, a new piece soon!
