Hi I am deciding between 2 diamonds - could any one recommend which one they would chose? My husband and I are upgrading my ring for our 5th anniversary I currently have a .90 E Vs1.

Here are choices:

Diamond 1
HRD:
1.32
E
Vs1
Round
Measurements: 6.92 - 6.95mm X 4.34mm
Pavillion Depth: 43%
Table Width: 61%

Diamond 2
GIA
1.56
G
Vs2
Round
Depth: 62.4%
Table: 59%

Both are beautiful - I am one of the people that can see the difference in color. Also am not familiar with HRD. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Id go with higher clarity than color, and a better cut. Get the best cut you can. Personally an F, G, or H is more "cost effective" than an E. And that means you can get a bigger stone than you would with an E.

Aloha,

There seem to be some numbers missing. It is hard to tell from just the numbers listed what kind of performance they will have. The cut advisor on the home page uses both pavillion and crown angles to obtain a score.

From the sound of your post, I take it that you have seen both diamonds. My big question would be about the color. You mention that you can see the color difference, and since you have had an E color up to now, do you think you can live with the difference? Can you see a big difference in size between these two stones, and does the difference make up for the color you can detect?

Good luck with your search. And remember, we love pictures, lots of pictures, so keep us posted!

From what I've read, HRD is on a very similar level with GIA and AGS, it's just that they aren't very common in the U.S., but instead are more common in Europe. As far as the cut of the diamonds, the information on both of the diamonds is insufficient to give a meanignful comment on it. The minimum amount of info most people here would ask for before startinng to evaluate cut are depth percentage, table percentage, pavilion angle (or percentage), crown angle (or percentage), and to a lesser extent, girdle thickness and culet size. As far as the color and clarity, I personally think VS2 is a sweet spot in clarity for diamonds the size you are looking at. You could probably find some nice SI1's in that size, but VS2's are definitely a safer bet, and VS1 might be a slight overkill as far as the difference you can see with your naked eye. As far as color, that's even more of a personal preference thing, and like you said, some people notice it more than others. I personally think G is a great color because it's still pretty much completely white, while a little cheaper than DEF. However, there's nothing wrong with going a little higher in color if you want that super icy look. My fiance's ring is around 1.3 carats and is an E VS2, so you can see where my preference is, however if I had to do it over again, I probably would have gone for F or G, instead. I think HRD provides a lot of info on their reports, so see if you can get more of the numbers that deal with the cut of the stone. GIA, unfortunately, only provides depth and table percentage, so the only way to get the other numbers is to ask the dealer for a sarin report, which will give all the measurements on the stone. By the way, is there a price difference between the two stones?

Hard to say without more info (crown angles, total depth, preferably all the same info for both stones). Neither of these looks like an ideal cut though... tables are too big. I'd look for a better cut first and foremost, and personally, since I'm also sensitive to color, I'd get a VS2 or eye clean SI1 in order to keep the higher color... Just my non-expert $.02. OK, maybe it's just worth $.01 then!

if you are color sensitive..then go with the higher color, but maybe drop in clarity. otherwise it will bug you later. like the others have said, it would be nice to have a little more information on the stones..but for me, i would go size and the G VS. G's are fantastic and very very white..and youll get over that lovely half carat mark..yum!
