E-ring setting question

I am about ready to place an order in the morning with JA and a friend brought up a couple of points I hadn''t thought of before - looking for some comments.

First, the width of the band is 4mm and the stone is 5.8mm - will the proportion look out of whack? In that size of a stone (.72ct), do I need to go with a thinner band? My GF has a 7.5 finger and tends to wear rings with wider bands to begin with.

The other question - I''ve been told that any setting I choose, I need to take into consideration the type of wedding band that it will match. HUH?!?!?! How many of you took that into consideration? Or should I get the ER now and worry about a band later?

As for the 4mm band, if your girl likes wider bands, I would go with what she likes. It MAY make the stone look a little smaller, but if she likes the 4mm, I say stick with it. You could look at a 3mm band if you want. Just for reference, the ring I bought my girl is a 3mm band with an 0.82ct center stone and it is a size 8. Pics are located here:

As for the second question, yes, you should consider the wedding band. Some settings, like mine, don''t fit with every style of wedding band. Your, however, looks like it should be ok with most of them. Just ask JA and see what they say.

Good advice. NO, bands don''t have to match, but if a matching band is desired, you are maybe better off buying a set or making sure that your e-ring will accomodate a w-band. I wore a stand-alone ring for 14 years with no wedding band because I could never find a band to go with my e-ring. I just upgraded to a wedding set because I wanted that after all these years.

Personally I think a thinner band will make a stone look bigger and make it pop. 4mm is rather thick for a band, however if you gf prefers a thicker band, it may be ok.

I think I would stick to a 3mm band though, it''s still on the thick size without making the stone look too small. I think this would probably give a better balance.

Sounds a bit crazy but you can get a ruler and draw the stone as close to real life as possible and then try drawing bands of different thicknesses. It won''t be 100% accurate but I find it to be helpful when you are trying to get an idea of proportions.

You could also start a thread in SMTR folder, asking to see erings with thicker bands, say 3mm and up?

We bought my engagement ring and wedding band together so they would match perfectly. This was very important to me.

Does she plan on wearing her band alone often? If so, a wider band will be nicer. I usually wear my engagement ring on my right and my wedding band on my left. If they will be worn together, I agree with the others who recommend 3mm.

For me, matching a wedding band was very important to me, as well as having them sit fairly close together. The best thing for me was to just get a plain wedding band since the band on my e-ring is plain also and they sit very close together.

I agree w/ PP''s in that a thinner band will make your diamond look bigger, but if you know she likes larger bands, that might be her style, you obviously know her best

Thanx for the replies so far! Being a newb, I've been concentrating on building the nicest ER possible and totally neglected to take in consideration the big follow up, lol!

I've re-evaluated my setting selection and found a 3mm band that looks very nice and has a matching wedding band when the time comes.
