I’m really new to this forum but soon realized there are so many experts here so I need some expert input concerning resizing my engagement ring. I’m attaching pictures to show. It’s platinum 900 and the diamond is .30

I took it to my local jeweler here in Germany and she was hesitant to do it because she supposedly only has 950 platinum. I had no idea that makes a difference. I’ll be back in Chicago in June where I’m from and we’ll see if I can get it done there. Unfortunately I think the place we bought it from on jewelers Row and Walbash is closed. We are looking at not more than one size increase. So I have some specific questions.

1. Do most US jewelers have 900 platinum? Does make a difference if you use 950 and 900 together to resize a ring?
2. The jeweler here was implying that resizing can damage the setting as this setting is complicated ?
3. Will resizing it kill the inscription? It’s a little bit more to the side as you can see in the pictures
4. What cost are we talking about ballpark to resize a ring like this.
5. I’m also playing around the idea to upgrade the diamond size. Not more than .50 Will this totally kill the setting?
6. What’s the price ballpark to reset a diamond. Diamond cost separate.
7. how long does it take to resize or ring or reset? I’ll only be in Chicago for about a week.

I don’t know if I’m allowed to ask this but if any of you are actual jewelers in Chicago downtown PM me.
Thanks

Hi, a few things.

I would call your ring a "faux" tension setting. I don't think you can add a larger stone to it because your stone sits in a basket, sized to your stone with the metal meeting the sides. However, I'm not in the trade. But, I don't imagine that's going to be something that's doable and if someone tells you yes, j would ask you see photos of where they did it before.

On sizing, because it's faux tension, I would imagine that you could with limitations.

Your inscription may well get "stretched" though.

On timeline and cost, every place is different and fast and cheap doesn't mean good, not does slow and spendy.

In Chicago, Ivy and Rose is a vendor I know that I would trust their bench. You could email them as well in advance. I'm sure they can answer questions for you as well.

Your diamond looks pretty tight in there. I don’t think it could accommodate a larger stone. If you are intent on upgrading the stone it might be best to just get a new setting. I second Ivy & Rose in Chicago.

The last time I had my platinum band resized (up) it was $100 and I live somewhere where cost is not that high. That was over
10 years ago and my shank was a simple 1.5mm width shank and not as deep as yours either.

I* think if you could find a really good bench they may be able to make it where a .5 stone would fit. It may be cost-prohibitive though.
(my opinion, I'm not a bench but I've seen some bench do amazing work). Could you get this done in a week? Highly unlikely.

Edit...my plat resize took over a week but they had to send it out to someone with a laser machine.

Thanks for the feedback. Ignorant me is thinking you simply warm the metal and it bends to what you want lol. I have no idea how jewelry is actually made. I guess I’ll drop the diamond upgrade thing. In a way I really sentimental on the original engagement ring idea when he proposed years ago Well we were still so young.I just need to either lose 60 pounds or get the ring resized. Actually the more I think about it I probably only need to lose 25 pounds to have the ring fit again.
My advice to you young people out there. If you’re 25 and super skinny assume that in 20 years your fingers might be a tad larger after having kids, not having the time to work out five days a week. So get an engagement ring that’s not snug more on the loose side and if need be get an ultrathin eternity band to hold the Ring in or put some sizing beads in it. Specially if you get a ring that’s a bit complicated to resize.

Why not get a new ring to upgrade? Ivy and Rose is very reasonable in cost. Pick out something to celebrate all the years that is easier to size. Win win!

OMG. I was checking their site out. They have some great stuff. Sent them an email. And they have some great deals IMO. I love their diamond and pink morganite rings.

I can’t believe how reasonably priced their vintage settings are

Keep in mind a lot of their vintage settings are repros (in case an original was important to you) but yes they are reasonably priced.

Yep! You could get a whole anniversary ring that is sizable if you change finger sizes. Maybe they can help size yours too. I'd be tempted to get something to celebrate the 20 odd years you mentioned! Just read the description carefully. Some are modern and some are old. It's a mix

Also, remember that most old cuts are cut on the deeper side so .5 may not be the jump that you want compared to your .3 .
In other words, you may want to go bigger than .5 in an older cut. If you go to I&R you can check out things for yourself. It would
certainly be a fun trip. Try to go early in your visit so if something catches your eye any changes can be made. Good luck and come
back with pics if you do find something!

Have you been in the place ? I have been stuck on their website the past two days. I just might go in with 2 grand ( my DH would kill me lol) and treat myself to an early birthday present. What did the PO mean with “repros”?? Or old vs new. Do they sell used items? That doesn’t bother me. Metal is metal to me. If you have been there. Do you recommend a certain associate ?

No, I have not been there but we have had a few PSers that have been.

Reproduction settings are newly made in an old style. I guess they just wanted to make sure you were aware of that in case it was important
to you. I believe they do sell some previously owned items.

I'll have to go take a look to see what they have right now!

Highly recommend, since it's feasible for you, that you do visit them for an in-person viewing.. In my experience, their reproduction settings -- like those from Leigh Jay Nacht in NYC (antiqueengagmentrings.com) -- can be lightweight (fine for occasional wear, but I'd be leery of how they would hold up for daily wear) and/or lacking crisp detail & fine finishing work. And of course, an antique/vintage ring may need, or benefit from, touch-up or rehab work because, e.g., the millegrain is worn or the shank is awfully thin from years of wear.

That said, there are certainly PSers who have been very pleased with their Ivy & Rose rings. And Ivy & Rose has a 30-day return policy -- although custom pieces, or work other than resizing, are final sales (that's also true of most jewelers).
Also, you'll want to confirm that the 30-day return policy stated on the website applies to in-person sales, not just online orders. Some vendors have a more generous return-refund policy for online orders since those purchasers did not see for themselves the purchased piece before ordering.

Looking forward to seeing what you decide upon!

If you upgrade to a new ring for your anniversary you could move the beautiful platnum ring to your pinky, you can stack it with a plain band to get it to be more snug if its loose
