I''ve been looking at stones for a while. After doing my homework I set out to find a GIA or AGS ideal cut, E, VS2.

After looking at a bunch of VS2 stones I was disappointed in the clarity I encountered so I revised my clarity criteria to VS1.

Where I''m hung up right now is on color. Yesterday I saw an AGS ideal cut (great H&A pattern), G, VS1 that shined brilliantly both in the jewelers and outside in natural sunlight. It''s the right carat size I wanted to get and it fits my budget.

From the above it sounds like I should be happy and done, but I''m really hung up with the fact that it''s a G. I still feel this way ater looking at an E stone side by side with this G and only being able to notice the slightest color difference when the stones were table down on a white background.

I feel that I did all my homework and now there''s this "G". Am I being crazy to still being hung up on getting an E whe I''ve found this beautifully cut and brilliant diamond?

You are obviously very fussy RC - given you can not see VS2 in normal wearing environments.
When the stone is being worn you might be able to pick a G from a D in some lighting. When it is dirty - it will be harder.
There is more difference between G-F tham F-D

The difference between "E" and "G" is honestly minimal...you could find an "E," but the cut is lousy, not allowing you to appreciate the wonderful color that you''ve got. Once the diamond is set, there is little difference to the eye between an "E" and "G," but the difference between a beautifully-cut stone and a lousy cut stone can be distinguished VERY easily!!

Have you checked out the price differences for the same sized stone w/different colors and clarity???? All stones are individual.....VS1 or 2 varies from stonesto stone....Lots of folks here have found very nice SI1 stones that are as clean as some VS2''s......!!!! I think you will really see a price hike between G and E VS1...!!i

the G of course...

If you''re hung up on the color issue, then hunt around a bit longer until you find a stone of higher color than a G. These stones are out there.

My diamond is a G and I love it. . .but, if I wanted "better," I wouldn''t settle for a color that would make me question my purchase for years to come.

Are you still shopping at Tiffany & Co. for a ring? The more jewelers you check out, the more likely you''ll find a great diamond.

at the HK fair I looked at Dehres stand - they have hundreds of huge stones on display.
It is very easy to pick G from E in +5ct stones from a meter away in the display windows under halogens.

part of finding the right stone is being mentally comforatble with it''s specs. At some point it is splitting hairs on ideal cut, top clarity and colors stones. They represent a very small % of the total diamond market, but if you are a "picky" type, you may not get over knowhing there might be something better out there. Think about whether what you are worrynig about is mental or visual. They both are factors to be taken into consideration, but you should differentiate between them. Garry is color sensitive (so am I), but you don''t live under halogen lights, so my bet is that the visual difference is not very discrenable.

My take on this is if a VS2 is not good enough for you than a G is not going to cut it either. If you buy a G VS1 it may bug you that you didn''t get a better color also.

Is there a difference in a G and an E. You bet there is. Will other people see that difference? Probably not.

Not long ago here on PS someone brought up the term "mind clean". That is not the same as "eye clean".

What do you want and what are you willing to pay to get it. Why not a D? After all thats the best!

Take a look at a E and G side by side.. then you can make your choice. Many people told me that a D-F don''t make much of a difference but when I recently upgraded for my fi the D coloured stone is so much clearer and clearly outshine the F which is a H&A.

I bought the D on a discount due to the existence of fluorescent.. G is great but if you or your fiance is colour sensitive.. go for a higher colour if you can afford it... so when ppl ask for your specs.. you can tell them it''s a D.

I think if the color in the G bothers you now, you should go higher, even if it''s psychological.

You''re right -- shouldn''t try to give advice after wine

I think it also depends on the color perception of ther wearer. I also have an E, but that''s because I liked the icy whiteness of it. A lot of people say you can''t tell the difference in the higher color grades, but I could easily pick between and E and a F, but not between a D and E. Each person is different though. Some can see imperfections in a VS2, but I couldn''t see anything. If you''re don''t think you''ll be happy with the G, then continue looking. This isn''t the type of decision where you should settle and then have regrets later. There are stones out there. It may take a while to find the right one for you, but keep looking. It took months before I found the 1.31ct E VS2 H&A that I fell in love with. I know with the continuing price increases, you probably feel that you have to buy right NOW. I kind of felt the same way when we were looking. We payed about $9860 for the diamond several months ago, which was a bit high at the time. But everytime I look at it, I just know it''s the right one for me. No matter how many other rings I compare it to (there''s been so many people getting engaged at work lately), I have no regrets. Anyway, good luck in your search.
