Dear Board,

Thank u so much for all the info here, it has really been helpfull and its nice to see nice stones.

Im a dutch guy who worked in the states (MO) and fell in love with a girl from colorado. Right now im in the netherlands and shes working in Albania.

In a month im gonna visit her and propose! please be quiet.... you guys are the first to know.

My budget isnt that much, but i have found a gorgeous mounting and now im looking for the stone. i do have a few questions, i hope u can help me.

My stone im gonna buy in antwerp at "diamondland" its gonna be between 0.7 and .075 f colour.

now i saw a stone VS1 were the inclusion was on the side of the pavilioun and was near colourless.. can it be that a stone VS1 has less influence on the brilliance and fire than a vvs1, depending on how/were/ what the inclusion is??????

if the report says that symmetry and polish are exellent do i have to worry about the angles? or does this mean the angles are the best possible?

How important is the naked eye in buying a diamond?

Hope u can help me out and ill keep u posted.

Thx

Jeroen

Hi, and welcome!

First of all, the angles do matter. You need the stone to have GIA or AGS lab grading, hopefully. Symmetry and polish have nothing to do with angles. As long as those are very good, excellent, or ideal, you''ll be fine.

If the stone is GIA or AGS graded, you will probably not be able to see VS1 inclusions with a 10x loupe, so there is absolutely no reason to go with VVS over VS1. VS1 is a very, very clean stone and will not in any way affect the beauty of the stone negatively.

With a round stone, it is possible to pick a great stone without seeing it. But if you have the opportunity to see them, I''d insist on excellent and ideal cut only, and then select from those.

I guess I should add that there are some general measurements to look for if you want a well-cut stone:

table: 54-57

depth: 60-62

crown angle: 34-35

pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

girdle: thin, medium, or slightly thick

polish and symmetry: very good or better

In a perfect world, all you would need to buy a diamond is the naked eye. However in the real world diamond prices are based on distinctions so minor that the naked eye is not sufficient to determine if a diamond is accurately presented. Laboratory certificates can help. The GIA and AGS lab are most the consistent and are known for accuracy. You say you are looking at a VS1, but a VS1 should be absolutely eye-clean in the diamond size you are looking at. Experts use various tools to evaluate diamonds. A 10X magnifying loupe is the most common, it can be used to evaluate inclusions, symmetry and polish features. To evaluate the cut quality further experts also use IS and ASET scopes that rate light return and other cut nuances. These tools are relatively inexpensive, and can help you choose an excellent diamond. Even with these tools I still recommend buying a diamond with a respected laboratory certificate, from a well reputed diamond merchant.

Good luck with your search!

Try Crafted by Infinity stones, http://www.craftedbyinfinity.com/. They are very ideal cuts and based in Antwerp.

This seems to meet your specs, not sure of your budget.

They have a dealer in Antwerp, http://www.diamondhouse.be/ You can request the above stone, or any other CraftedbyInfinty stones you want to see to be sent to this dealer.
Excellent idea! This way you''d know for sure you were getting a top cut quality stone!

Tkanks for the advice so far! im glad for it.

i will not hesitate! :P

Do inclusions affect the sparkle and fire of a diamond?

now hows is this: can a VS2 inclusion (depending on the place and kind) be of less influence on sparkle than a VVS1 inclusion???
(the VS2 inclusion i saw was on the pavilioun on the side and colourless)

hope u know the answer.

Inclusions rarely effect brilliance, unless you are in the lower clarity ranges (SI2 and below), and it is almost impossible that a VS2 inclusions would affect the appearance more than VVS1, by definition of the grading system.

If you are shopping in Antwerp then Infinity are alway a great choice, contact Rob or Paul and they will have lots of help to give you.
