My big orange kitty O.P. is sick. I''m upset and trying not to snivel at work. My husband is a sweetie and took him in to the vet today; lucky boy, he''s never done a vet appointment in the 14 years we''ve had kitties together. Plus since we moved it''s a new vet, the other one is just too far away.
I have no idea what''s wrong with O.P. I realized when I was going to bed last night that I hadn''t seen him all day, and got worried about him. Sure enough he was doing the sick cat hunch n hide. I don''t think he''d eaten all day. Couldn''t get him to move or react to anything, just kept looking totally miserable. I picked him up to put him in the bedroom where I could watch him and he kept trying to creep under the dresser.
He''s never been really sick before. Hopefully it''s something simple. DH said he asked for water earlier today.
He''s getting some blood tests done, the vet said there were no obvious tumors or heart problems. However, his weight loss is much worse than I thought. He was 16 lbs a few years ago, and now hes (gulp) 6 lbs. He''s so furry I didn''t realize, and most if it was lost in the last month or so.
He was a foundling- he showed up at our work about 5 years ago and was skinny- but not as much as he is now
- and matted and clearly lost. All the no-kill shelters said he was at risk for being put down because of his eye. (As it turns out, they were all right that his eye is not fixable- apparently he was kicked in the face as a kitten and his eye healed wrong. We had some plastic surgery done on it, but though it''s better, it''s still always gooey). He also had a .22 caliber bullet in his neck. He was definitely abused, he cringed for about a year and never made a sound, but he finally stopped cringing and talks all the time now. He and my other kittyboy Rat are totally in love, it''s adorable. They sleep in a pile and groom each other.
My husband is always reluctant to go to the vet; Rat got really sick about a year ago and we spent several thousand trying to figure out what was wrong... turns out all it was, was that he hated the new food and decided to starve himself rather than eat it. So DH is always convinced that cat problems are imaginary, and if a cat is old it''s not worth doing any tests on them. (We have no idea how old O.P. is of course.)
We go back tomorrow with him at 8 AM for his blood test results.
DH just brought him into work on the way back from the vet, and let him cruise around the antique mall for a bit. All my co-workers got to give him a snuggle. He''s very laid back and hung out on the front desk with me for a bit. He''s definitely feeling perkier- purring, curious- but shaky and weak, maybe from not eating yesterday & today.
Anyway. Worried. Trying not to freak out.
