Okay, this is a dumb question. My friend has a .50 ct e-ring, and has always been unhappy with the size (too small). In doing research, I''ve noticed that the diameter of a round diamond can vary a bit within the .50 ct range, but is somewhere around 5.1 mm. There seems to be a bit more variation in diameter in the 1 ct-ish range, somewhere around 6.2-6.5 mm or so. I get that double the ct weight does not equal double the diameter, but that seems like a pretty small difference to me. Do people really notice a significant size difference between a .50 and 1-ish ct?

Hers looks the same as the 1 cts that I''ve seen, and I guess 1 mm or so does not seem like much of a size difference. Have people upgraded from .50 to 1 ct and noticed a big size difference?

Absolutely. Going from 0.5 ct to 1 ct is a very large jump. You can draw circles of 5 mm and 6.5 mm and compare. If you are comparing a well cut stone to a well cut stone, the difference will be great. If the 0.5 ct is well cut but the 1 ct is poorly cut (will most likely be less than 6.5 mm), then the difference will be less.

Here''s a thread with pictures (that have been sized to approximately a realistic size) that shows the difference between a 1 ct and 1.25 ct and a couple others.

Edit: Chrono was faster than I--posted the same thread and everything... Great minds think alike!

check out this chart and compare sizes.

Thanks so much Avlis! That actually explains a lot - I''ve seen 1 ct princess cut diamonds that didn''t wow me with size, and now I know why - the princess 1 ct has a diameter/width of about 5.5 mm, and a .50 ct round has nearly the same at about 5.2 mm. But a 1 ct round is a pretty noticeable jump over a .50 round. Thanks.
