I had been using the Clinique dramatically different moisturizing gel, but it never helped my skin condition it just eased my dry skin every morning so I went looking for a different product that would improve the everyday moisture of my skin. I have been trying new products nearly weekly with a few days in between of just using warm water.

First was Eucerin - red blotches everywhere
Arbonne - red irritation even worse
Neutrogena - too greasy - made hair around my face greasy
Ponds - bright red cheeks with a warm sensation, actually kind of hurts

This is making me mad because I have dry skin something fierce this winter despite my humidifier. Nothing is working and my skin is in horrible red condition that won''t go away. I''m going to go back to Clinique because at least it didn''t turn me into a beet.

If you have sensitive skin, what do you use?

I''ve had really good luck with Olay moisturizers. I put it on while my face is still damp and it seals the moisture in.

I''ve been using the Body Shop''s Aloe moisturizer (day and night) and I really like it. I use both D and N during the day, I use the day all over the the night in my drier areas. It works well, it moisturizes and isn''t greasy. It also doesn''t irritate my skin or make me break out.

We also have a humidifer and I drink ton of water, but like you, nothing seems to help the source of the problem.

I have super sensitive skin on my face, and while it isn''t SUPER dry, it does get tight and uncomfortable. My skin breaks out really bad if I use anything too oily, though, so I use Oil of Olay with sunscreen, for sensitive skin. It''s very light and absorbs quickly, no oily mess or irritation.

If you find ANYTHING please let me know!

My skin is constantly flaking. it''s awful! Plus its sensistive, AND i get eczema!

I also use the Dramatically Diff lotion by Clinique, as its the only thing I can tolerate right now.

I''ve found this Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion to be very soothing. Sounds like some of the creams you are using may have salycylic acid, or some other ingredient intended to act as an exfoliant, which may be contributing to the redness?

If all else fails, you may want to visit a dermatologist.

My friend had a bright red face our entire teenage years. . .turned out she is allergic to Sodium Laurel Sulfate. She tossed all her face and hair products that contain it (even her much beloved Cetaphil) and the problem went away. The only time it flares up is if a hairdresser accidently puts hair products on that have that.

I normally have combination skin, but in the winter, my skin is so dry that I get white patches on my chin and around my mouth! I look like I powdered my face. This winter, I actually took to exfoliating with a sugar scrub (since they are oil based) and moisterizing with body lotion... specifically Palmer''s Shea Butter body lotion, or occasionally their Cocoa Butter lotion. I''ve also had a hard time finding a moisterizer that I love because the brands keep chaining their offerings and formulations.

Anything with SPF, which everyone recommends, tends to make me greasy and prone to breakouts. *sigh*

I definitely feel your pain!

I''m a huge fan of the cetaphil moisuturing cream. If it seems too heavy for you just put on at night. Thalgo makes a melt away moisuring mask that I use every other night when its really cold.

One thing you can do is if you have a Sephora neaby is ask for a weeks worth of samples of various face creams. Everything with SPF makes me break out too (and that is the only thing that really does, so if I stay away from that, my skin is fine) soooo. . .when I went in to find a face cream, it took about 10 minutes for the sales associate to find an SPF free cream that sounded right for me. She gave me a heaping handful of samples to try before spending the money on that product. Mostly because I had just returned $100 worth of Clinque and was really frustrated.

This is the one I ended up buying: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P3588&shouldPaginate=true&categoryId=3728

Trillionaire - for the dry skin/white patches, try something with a hydroxy acid (AHA or BHA). There are a ton of different ones available. The deal is you cannot use those in the summer as increases skin sensitivity to the sun. I wear a hat during the summer

I don''t often use the BHA or AHA stuff in the summer.

I have ridiculous skin... half super oily, half super dry... and I''ve struggled with finding the right products for years!

One of the best products I''ve found is the Mario Badescu cleanser! Its the one sold in the anti-redness kit(don''t remember the name right now) but its sold separately as well. I feel like it really cleanses my skin without drying it and I don''t even need a moisturizer later. If you find that you DO need a moisturizer though, the moisturizer that comes in the same kit is excellent. I use a bit at night only (its a little heavy for daytime and not necessary for me anyway) if my skin is irritated or if I''ve been using my dove sensitive skin soap instead of the face wash. You can also request free samples if you just want to try the products out first!

I was going to suggest the Arbonne facial serum... can''t remember the name of the product line it comes in but the packaging is orange. That stuff kept my skin moisturized the whole day. I only used it for the first time last week. However, you mentioned you were less than happy with the redness that resulted.

I normally use the Neutrogena facial moisturizer with SPF. I''ll look up the name of the product line and post later on. Its light and effective for me.

I''m with appletini on this one! Cetaphil for me moisturizes without being greasy. Absorbs quickly too!

Thank you so much for the recommendations! Someone suggested AHA products before, but I guess I wasn''t looking at the right stores, as I couldn''t find any. I remember seeing products like that frequently growing up, but maybe they are more high end now? Who knows. I meant to google some products, but I guess I forgot. My skin was really horrid this Oct - Dec, but has been much better recently. Maybe all of the moisture in the air because of all the snow? LOL

Thanks!

I HAD terribly dry skin until I started using Oil of Olay Regenerist Serum... this stuff is amazing and it also goes on really well as a make-up base.

That''s three votes for Oil of Olay. I''m going to see if CVS will exchange some of these losers for this. Thanks for the input. I''ll let you know if it works for me. Might take a few days to get rid of this existing allergic reaction thing on my face.

SP, were you really using the Dramatically Different Gel and not the Lotion? If so, I think that might be the problem. I''m a long-time Clinique user, and I use the DD Gel because my skin is a Type 3 (oily). If you''ve been having dryness problems, you might try switching to the DD Lotion instead of the Gel. It should be just as gentle on your skin, but more moisturizing than the gel. Hope this helps!

starset, i have similar dry, flaky skin and used clinique superdefense mooisturizer for years. it didn''t quite do the job of healing my skin in the winter months.

for the past year or so i''ve moved over to estee lauder''s hydrationist moisturizer and it''s really helped my skin calm down. i have fewer red patches and the flaky spots are gone. i hope it continues to work this well for me!

I too had been using the Clinique for a while when I really realized it wasn''t helping me at all.

I''ve had GREAT luck with Cetaphil *cream* NOT the lotion. I know it sounds counterintuitive but the lotion is oily on me(and most people it seems) but the cream soaks in nicely. I''ve tried lots of products both drugstore and department and this is my favorite!

I have pretty sensitive skin with a touch of rosacea, and my dermatologist recommeded this: DML Forte

I *love* it! I use it on both my hands and my face, and it''s wonderful! I know that you can get it at the pharmacy at CVS - it''s not prescription, but you have to ask for it at the pharmacy (and they may have to order it for you). I highly recommend it!

I agree with the other posters recommending Cetaphil cream. I use both the gentle cleanser and the cream (at night) and it has really helped to balance my skin without causing any irritation. If I have a few really bad dry areas, I rub a little Aquaphor on those spots before bed.

just wanted to make a correction. i''ve been using the hydra-bright moisturizer linky

one other thing is that i wash my face with lukewarm water ONLY most of the time. i use a mild cleanser (cetaphil) to clean my face when i put makeup on otherwise i just use water. it had made a world of difference to not be using soap on my face.

My favorite thing for my sensitive skin is a newer Clinique moisturizer that''s become my HG product for the past 2 years or so:

It''s called Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief - it''s highly moisturizing, but it has a gel-creme consistency so it doesn''t clog my pores. I have also tried the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel, which is OK, but that doesn''t give me enough moisture for winter.
Here''s a link to the product:
http://www.clinique.com/product/CATEGORY4918/PROD13291/Skin_Care/Moisturizers/index.tmpl

I have had an allergic reaction to most drugstore products, but the Olay for Sensitive Skin is pretty good if you want a drugstore product.

Starset, I have skin issues similar to yours. I currently use vaseline (yup, straight up petroleum jelly) in a very light layer on my t-zone right after I shower or wash my face at night before bed. It really helps with the dry/red spots.

Another product I''ve had success with in the past is Moisturel. Not the lotion but the tub of thick stuff. It has no fragrance or additives and is very mild. Great for dry/easily irritated skin.

I''ll take a break-out any day over super dry, itchy, red blotchy skin.

You might want to also look into changing your facewash...if you use one that dries out your face that doesn''t help either. I also get regular facials during the winter months to help.

I have super sensitive skin and I think I have tried almost everything under the sun for skin care products. As of recent I have found that Skyn Iceland products(Sephora carries them or can be ordered directly from the company online) work very well for me, I also changed my facial cleanser to Aveeno calming cream and do alot of exfoliating(manually with baking soda added into my cleanser 3 times a week and using a Clarisonic) and my skin is soooo much happier. I would also make sure you are getting lots of water intake and that you have no food sensitivities that are causing your dry skin. Good luck!

I thought about this too. I used to have acne issues and was using a medicated face wash. My friend with gorgeous porcelain skin pointed out that if I use a harsh face wash and strip all of the natural oil out of my skin that my skin then goes into overdrive trying to replenish. Now I just wash my face in the morning with a mild exfoliating (to get rid of dead skin cells) non medicated wash and I just splash warm water on my face and pat dry at night. I use facial moisturizer in the morning only. I haven''t had a bad break out in so long I can''t recall the last one. I do get the random pimple here and there but her advice really helped me. Salycilic acid and benzoyl peroxide can really do a number on skin! If you do want to keep with a medicated wash then give the Aveeno foaming medicated facial cleanser a try. Its really gentle and I find that oatmeal does WONDERS for controlling breakouts (I use Trafer Joes oatmeal soap on my body because I am prone to getting pimples on my chest).

Wow, sorry. That was probably more info than you needed but I just figured I''d share the simple stuff that helped me dramatically improve my skin and help with dryness as well.

Thank you for all the replies. I actually just use eye makeup remover and ''wash'' my face with warm water - over and over. I''m on day three of using no moisurizer and I''ll have to say even though my skin is dry and flaky it''s not red or on fire anymore. Because I like Clinique gel so much in the summer, maybe I''ll look at Vesper''s Thirst Relief. Otherwise, it''s going to be Olay''s Regenerist or Cetaphil creme. Ahhhh, too many choices. I''m glad I''m not alone though.
