Helllo PS! So after learning everything about diamonds on this site, i''ve had the chance to actually go inside stores this week and physically see some rocks...i must say, its quite nerve wrecking...but i''ve narrowed it down to 3 stones and now i need to choose...all are GIA certified...but i need some expert advice on which diamond is best.

The setting i''ve decided on is a tacori 2620..its a beautiful pave setting with a halo...

Option #1 (the one im leaning towards atm)

http://www.mervisdiamond.com/inventory/diamonds/cert_pup.php3?item_no=93922

in case link does not work, here are the specs:

Round Brilliant
1.33ct G/VS2
7.09-7.13x4.33mm
Cut Grade: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent

Table: 57%
Depth: 60.9%

The total price for this ring is $14,000 (11,265 for the diamond, 3,535 for the setting...then they took off $800)

Option #2
Round Brilliant
1.23ct D/VS2
6.88-6.91x4.27mm
Cut Grade: Very Good
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Very Good

Table: 52% (Not a typo)
Depth: 61.9%

I got a quote on this diamond for $9,600 (on sale from 11K and change, but still seems quite low for a D/VS2?)..but the setting is 3,800 and the total comes out to $14,000 as well..

The 3rd option is a 1.21ct F/VS2 and it''s also a Very Good Cut grade, but has Very Good Polish, and Good Symmetry...and this diamond was quoted at 8,600...so it would ring me a little bit over $13K.

I guess my main concern was choosing from the first two options...Seeing as the first diamond is all EX/EX/EX grade compared to the second one of VG/G/VG...i''m slightly leaning towards option #1...based on the specs, what do you guys think???

thanks in advance!

I''d go with the first one. The table is very small in the second.

Hi jirm,

Can you get the crown and pavilion angles for these diamonds please? That way we can help you evaluate each diamond. The table is small on the second, but get the rest of the info, the first looks most promising from what we have.

Have you seen either of these diamonds?

that''s currently what im leaning on atm...to me the biggest difference on paper was the D color compared to the G....but the G stone seemed to shine brighter...and from what i''ve learned...that is because of the EX/EX/EX cut grade...

im not sure what the rapp report says about a 1.33 G/VS2....but is the $11,265 (8,470 per/ct) about "fair?"

Round Brilliant
1.33ct G/VS2
7.09-7.13x4.33mm
Cut Grade: Excellent

Table: 57%

Crown Angle: 33%
Pavilion Angle: 41%

Option #2
Round Brilliant
1.23ct D/VS2
6.88-6.91x4.27mm
Cut Grade: Very Good
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Very Good

Table: 52% (Not a typo)
Depth: 61.9%
Crown Angle: 34%
Pavilion Angle: 40.2%

Thanks! The first one would be my pick. Have you actually seen these diamonds?

Yes, i went in yesterday to both stores to check them out...the D/VS2 looked pretty good, and compared to the other G/VS1 that she had to show me, the D color was very obvious...

however when i went in to see the G/VS2...the diamond just looked better...and for some reason, the D/VS2 just didnt seem like a good fit on the setting....i know it would be carefully placed to fit...but the look of the 1.33 on the setting was better than the 1.23....

being that the second diamond had a pretty small table, a good polish, and a VG symmetry rating, is the overall cut grade of VERY Good a generous one?

im just wondering if im getting a good price on the diamonds itself...the setting i know is gonna be around the same price range...

The smaller tabled diamond appears to score decently enough with the HCA, so I would say it is a matter of preference if you like this diamond, however the 1.33 may offer a more balanced performance depending. You can check your pricing using the search tool above, online vendors can often be lower priced than brick and mortar stores.

I''ve gotten a quote on yet another diamond...this is from my good friends family store..but he informed me that he had found...

Round Brilliant
1.23ct G/VS2
Excellent Cut, Excellent Polish, Excellent Symmetry
and gave me a quote of 9,800...

i asked what the rapp was for a G/VS2 and he said it was 7,400 per carat...obviously 7,400x1.23 = 9,102...so does that mean the extra 700 is because of the Excellent cut grades?

also the 1.33 G/VS2 all with triple EX cut scores from GIA was quoted at 8,470 per carat...so the total was 11,265.

however the retailer took off $800 to make it 10,465 , so basically the 1.33 was given at 7,868 per carat.

I guess what im asking is....if the price per carat is higher than the rapp report, am i not getting a deal? or is it because of the higher cut quality?

thanks in advance!

We need the crown and pavilion angles to be able to judge this diamond also please.
