Double vs single prongs for this cathedral solitaire?

I’m torn between double or single claw prongs for this 4-prong cathedral solitaire setting for my 8mm round brilliant.

I originally wanted double prongs after falling in love with a photo. This is going to be for a second wedding set because I love to switch it up, and the double prongs would be something different than my main 6-prong Tiffany style solitaire.

Then I started changing my mind after snagging a preloved band to go with, and after looking at lots of cathedral solitaire pics - I’m now wondering if the profile view of the diamond band would look better with single prongs on the solitaire?

I have a feeling either one would look lovely, but I would love some input! Maybe it will help me get over my analysis paralysis so I can get the ring made soon. TIA!

I only have these renders rather than actual photos of the solitaire with the double prongs, paired with photos of the band. The other solitaire photos I found online just for reference

Below is the double prong solitaire ring that started my search for the setting 9825472C-C464-45F6-A244-8C4A678742F7.jpeg

I think either double or single claw prongs can look absolutely amazing, but I think it also depends on who is creating the setting, as different vendors have different prong "styles," if you will. If you let us know more about the setting you have in mind that would be helpful, as we can probably get a better sense of what the different prong choices would look like.

Thanks! I reached out to Amcor because I remember years back that’s who was making the “Incredible Solitaire” that Poppyseed offered for a great deal (and that’s exactly what I needed for this spare ring). He didn’t have any version of it for sale, but created the renders for me which are shown in the first two photos. Can you tell anything from those? When I inquired I included a profile view of the cad that was for the exact ring I wanted - Alex Parks was kind enough to share it with me even though he couldn’t make the ring since it’s for my own stone. It looks close as far as I can tell ? And just to make things more confusing - I’ll be sending the setting to David Klass to set my stone because he has it, so he gets to shape the claws

I love double!

Thank you! So you don’t think the double prongs will look too busy from the profile view paired with the band ? I’m likely overthinking this, as usual!

I like the double prongs but I’m a bit anxious about prongs. More prongs, more security.

I see what you mean about the single prongs echoing the shared prongs on your band, but to my eye I don’t think the double prongs look too busy at all and I would prefer them. In a way I like that they elevate and differentiate the solitaire. And in face-up view, I personally love the double-prong detail, especially with those finely-shaped claws. But that’s just my humble newbie opinion and others on PS are experts on this type of advice, so hopefully they weigh in too!

Both look just fine with your band.
How rough are you on your everyday set? I'm pretty rough on my jewelry and so would choose the double prong for a 'four' because of that.

@ItsMainelyYou @YadaYadaYada thank you - I considered the extra prongs for safety as well. I’m not rough on my rings and this isn’t for a 2ct diamond, it’s a moiss I was actually planning on selling until I had this great idea of spending more money !

I personally think single prongs have a cleaner look to them.

Thanks - I’m finding myself very drawn to the single prongs now ! but trying to talk myself out of it because the whole original plan was to copy that ring with the double prongs

Hard to say since the rendered profile just shows the prongs as blunt-ended "posts" sticking straight up. The taper of the prong ends that wrap onto the crown will determine the appearance.

Yes I so wish he had actual photos, but he did say the prongs will be left long for the setter to determine the shaping - and I’m thankfully having David Klass do that since he has my stone, so should be lovely pointy claws

I think the double prong setting looks great with the band you bought. In fact, I prefer it over the single prong.

Agreed.

Absolutely not and yes you likely are.

So is this your final answer?

Plans change ....... either will look great with your band ........ get whichever setting you like better.

And good luck with your decision, from someone who suffers horribly with analysis paralysis. :|

Haha, thanks so much... and no, single prongs are not my final answer, the double is looking better to me this morning. Hopefully final answer will hit me soon!

Double!!! If the workmanship is superb and delicate, nothing paralells the visual of fine double claw prongs to me.

I like the double prongs and love that “incredible” setting too!! I think the double prongs make the ring look more custom and unique.
I didn’t realize Amcor is still operating with the public. Is Poppyseed still around? Her name took me back...

Thanks @Slick1 ! I actually was looking for a setting on Etsy and saw Amcor’s shop and then remembered poppyseed and the incredible solitaire. I searched for her but looks like she’s not on here. I do have an email from her but I decided to just reach out to Amcor through Etsy. I just now found an old thread on here showing the setting with double prongs, it looks great

Thank you! Awesome. That’s good to know. Amcor was extremely accommodating for me when they reset a stone for me through Poppy years ago. I went into the city and they had me to their office and I waited while they did the work. Nice people. Good luck!! Looking forward to seeing this!

Here’s a thread showing a cushion in the amcor setting with single prongs Link

And this thread has this photo below with double prongs Link

And I can’t remember where I found this profile view photo but double prongs - maybe the same ring as above? With what looks like a very similar style band as my new one !

Well-done double prongs just look sooo dreamy to my. Especially for an 8mm center. I'm not sure if single prongs may have to be a bit beefy in order to securely hold the stone?

For this style, I prefer double prongs.

Thanks so much, everyone! I’m going with double. I realized the shoulders were different on the rings I loved with single prongs, and I think for this particular ring I prefer it with the double prongs. Looking forward to it and will be sure to post when it’s finished!

I was just about to vote for double prongs as well and then saw your post! I absolutely love the look of double prongs when they are well executed, so I think you made a fantastic choice!
