I usually have a lot of respect for salespersons but today I came across the most obnoxious, rude individuals! Just had to vent on PS, especially since one situation was e*ring related lol.

The first situation occurred at Lord & Taylors ... there was a rack of discounted shoes and I decided to try a few pairs on. It was a great sale but the shoes were still relatively expensive, averaging about $60 a pop. The salesman waiting on me was friendly enough but proceeded to stalk me as I tried on various shoes and attempted to convince me "how great they all looked blah blah blah". I was polite but stated that I probably would only end up buying one pair since I''m a student on a tight budget (a perfect excuse right?). After this, he still pushed that I should buy all of them, and had the audacity to say to me "this is what credit cards are for, right?". He must of thought I was the most naive, stupid woman ever! Sure, I''ll just charge it to a card when I don''t have the cash to pay it off right away! When that proved unsuccessful, he suggested that I take them all home and return the ones I didn''t want. Only one catch, I asked him if there was a no return policy on the sales shoes, and he said yes, ha ha! I left immediately after that and the guy made no sale at all.

The second was at a retail jeweler in the mall. I work in the medical field and recently decided that I would get a plain white gold band to wear on my ring finger in the hospital (more sanitary, less chance of losing my ring, etc.) My ring is a solitaire cushion on an extremely extremely thin micropave band (you can see pics on my 1.21.10 thread) - I initially thought I would get a pave band to match it but found out I liked the contrast between the plain band and the pave much more! I basically had decided on getting an 18K white gold 2 mm band and was pricing various retailers, the salesperson who waited on me in one particular store insisted that I needed to wear a pave band or else the set wouldn''t look right. I disagreed and said that most of the pave bands that stores carry are much wider than my ering band and look odd. In response, he pulls out some pave eternity bands (wayyyyy to big btw) and makes me try them on and they of course look horrible. He then tried to convince me that they would look better if resized (I have super small fingers, size 4.25) which wouldn''t really affect the width or size of the stones in the pave. He then REFUSED to allow me to try on plain bands, asking why would I want some cheap ring like that? At that point, I just walked out without saying a word, I don''t think I''ve ever done that before. I am still fuming over it!!! Grrr!!!

Wow, that''s kind of nuts! Doesn''t sound like a very fun day of shopping.

Salespeople don''t usually get too pushy with me for some reason. I''m pretty good at saying I don''t like something or I don''t want something, so if they try to get pushy I just tell them I don''t like it.

The shoe guy wouldn''t bother me too much, but the jewelry guy sounds completely obnoxious! REFUSING to let you try on plain bands? Honestly I''d probably call the store and complain to a manager about him. That''s ridiculous.

That jeweler must not have wanted a sale - I would rather sell a plain band than nothing at all!

very rude! that`s one reason I hate going car shopping (they tend to be the worst - along with realtors at open houses) - makes me so uncomfortable!

I hate pushy salespeople. Most of the time I''m looking and if I want help I''ll ask!

That is so rude!

I can''t stand sales people like that. I walked out of a Raymour and Flanigan furniture store once because the sales guy stalked me all over the store even though I told him to leave me alone at least 3 times. He''d pop out of nowhere and share some statistic about how many people liked the particular couch I was looking at

After a few minutes I just turned around and walked out. As I reached the door, two more sales guys (one may have been a manager) stepped in front of me and wouldn''t let me leave! They kept asking me why I was leaving, so I explained the situation, but they would not let me go. I was seriously ready to flip out. After another couple minutes of harrassing me (with big smiles, like "Why would you want to leave our nice little store?") I slipped past them and ran out.

I will never go back into that store. And now that I think about it, I should''ve called customer service and complained.

if i had a sales person use dishonest and unethical sales tactics on me (lie to me about return policy) to ring a sale i would report him to the manager so that he dosnt do this with other customers. As a manager or owner,If i knew a salesman in one of my stores was refusing to let a customer try on jewelry then that sales man would be fired asap! Both of these salepeople give decent sales professionals a bad name.

The ones who work my nerves are the ones who want to spray perfume all over me without letting me smell the bottle first.

Whenever I have to walk through a department store''s cosmetic/fragrance section, I find that the speed of my steps picks up just a bit, because I don''t want to be sprayed with random perfume!

That is terrible. I am sorry that you had that experience. I have been in sales for a few years now and I can assure you that I am not pushy at all. If they say no, they mean no. I ask if they have any questions and let them be.

As far as the furniture stores go, it is unfortunate, but that is management causing the irritation. I worked at a furniture store a while back and if you were not stalking a customer you were in trouble. The manager would ask who you were with and if you were not within 20 feet of them you would be written up. I did have customers come in and say that they prefer to be left alone. I told them that it was not our store policy, but I respect their space so if they had questions or needed me to please ask the receptionist to page me. I got in big trouble with that one. I did find that most people were ok with me checking in and just asking if they had questions after they made it halfway through the store. It wasnt too much, but enough that they did not feel un helped.

Sales jobs can make people a lot of money without college degrees. Everyone thinks they can be a salesman, but that isnt the case. You have to know when to accept an answer of no.

That's ridiculous! I'm pretty sure one of the guys who kept me from leaving was a manager, so I'm not surprised that it was a management thing and not just the individual employee. Ugh. Makes me not want to shop for furniture ever again!

Do you know why that's their policy? I can see keeping an eye on people with kids who might mess up the merch, but most people don't need to be stalked.

Mastering the art of the deal requires talent and a keen sense of how to read customer cues. I was in retail for a long time, both sales and management capacities, and one treads a very fine line between being offensive and closing the sale. Some salespeople have it, some don''t. Some just don''t care about the customer and only their commission or making their numbers for the day. It''s too bad people have to deal with crappy sale associates/managers, I''m sorry for everyone who has had to go through that because it shouldn''t be that way.
