I'm having a ring semi custom made for my GF, nothing to extreme, but couldn't find one that fit what I was looking for. I'm trying to keep this as much of a surprise as possible, but she already knows its comming so any more prodding into the topic of her ring size will totally let the cat out of the bag.

I'm having a ring made with this semi mount http://www.uniquesettings.com/products/show/3716

I've kinda estimate her ring size to be 6.5-7 range by comparing her ring finger to my pinky which is about the same about the second knuckle, she has a couple rings in her jewelry box that are size 7 but they could just be stock sizes and I've never seen her wear them, but I put them on my pinky and they sit about right where my pinky is about the same as her ring finger.

with this style setting can I just tell the jewler size 6.5 and be close enough and not have issues with resize, they are telling me it could be a problem with side stones, but I only thought that was a problem with pave or other more delicate stone mountings. I'm thinking that she can't be much smaller that 6 and certainly not bigger than 7. figuring at 6.5 then at worst i'm 1 size big or small, and thats not a huge resize, I think.

also here is the rough concept of what i'm having made. Her favorite color is Yellow, her birthstone is citrine (but a crappy stone for a ering so yellow sapphire is close enough lol) sides are diamond, I'm not a huge fan of diamond, but I wanted somthing natural and traditional, since I didn't know her view on synthetics. I often joke that she is a happy ball of sunshine, because she is honestly the most positive and happy person I know. and this kinda looks like a glowing sun with the trillion diamonds being rays of light coming off of it lol.

this isn't the ring or exact setting, but its the inspiration i'm using. the ring I'm getting has a 7mm concave cut cushion lemon yellow sapphire and the trillions are 3.5mm so should be a good looking ring, and every one of my female friends love the concept and none have said its to different

Personally I love the idea and the design VERY much! i'm a huge concave fan, but some either love it or hate it. I like your trillion idea with the cushion stone. I think it will love fabulous. As far as the size, the ring should be easy enough to resize hopefully no more than 2- sizes either way, should be fine.

There can be problems sizing, even without pave, if the amount the ring needs to be adjusted will torque the setting out of round too much and put outward pressure on the prongs of the side stones.

But like D&T said, I think if it's within two sizes it should be fine for that kind of design.

Congratulations, I love the design!

It is always better to have the correct size when there are any sidestones. Can you ask someone you can trust to find out her size? If you can't do that, then you'll just have to go with your guess! Hopefully it'll be close!

Is it possible for you to find out her size by "borrowing" one of her regularly-worn rings for a day when she's not wearing it?

My now-DH took a few of my rings to a jeweler one day to get the size when he was planning on buying a ring for me (not an Ering) and I didn't even notice. He had them back within a few hours. He told me about it later.

If she has size 7 rings being off by +/- a half size should be fine, even with side stones.

That said, I would have it made in a 7. Because I would be MORTIFIED if my BF proposed and the ring was too small when I tried to put it on. That could really ruin the moment.

Agreed. Stunning ring and I think you should be ok in regards to the sizing.

Thanks for the input. Surprised her with a bottle of her favorite wine last night and she sleeps like a rock after a litter wine lol, so I measured her finger with a string and compared it to a sizing chart and it is just a hair bigger than 6 so I sent the person in having do the ring a size of 6.5, should be really close.

Just hoping they get ring done in time, lol wasn't planning on something custom but it ended up that way.

"And that's the last thing I remember, Your Honor."

Measuring with a string can be misleading for 2 reasons:

1) Some people's fingers are largest at the knuckle, like mine, so the size can be underestimated.
2) Smaller bands go on and off easily, so many people can wear a smaller size in a thin band. The smaller the "band" (i.e. string), the more likely it is to underestimate the size. Since a string is much more narrow than any ring shank, you run the risk of underestimating her size.

For these reasons I'd still go with the 7. It wouldn't be hard to get it sized down if you need to.
