I have a wonderful little yorkie dog that is about 7 years old. I''ve always heard about yorkies having a difficult time being house broken and sure enough, my dog would much rather go to the bathroom on her puppypad rather then go outside when it''s raining. No scolding will work and we''ve realized to keep her away from the carpeting and on title when we aren''t home.

In any case, over the past few months my BF and I started noticing that she will have accidents while sleeping on the couch. She NEVER would go on the couch and she doesn''t even wake up when she goes. The first time she did it we scolded her... the second time we started getting worried... and now she did it twice in one night I think it may be a serious problem.

After many times washing my dog and my couch cushions now I just mostly worried that their might be something seriously wrong with her. Has anyone ever dealt with something similar? Maybe a urinary track infection? Can dogs get that?

Any help that you could give me would be great. I plan on taking her to the vet, but I wanted to see if any of you had any advice.

Thanks for your help and in case you wanted to see the little critter I''m talking about... Here is "Bubbles" (the big monster is Brooklyn) I love them so!

Accidents like that can be a sign of a couple of things. Urinary tract infections and diabetes are two that I can think of. I think taking her in to the vet is a good idea.
Good luck!

Another possibility is a hormone problem if she has been spayed.

Any recent changes in her environment or diet? Those are another couple things I can think of that might contribute to doggie incontinence besides physical health. Sorry to hear you''re going through this. I would definitely get her to the vet just to make sure she''s ok physically. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your help! I just finished giving her a nice bath and she seems to be her energetic self, but I''m still worried about her. The BF did just get them a new kind of food and I hate changing their diet. However I didn''t think food would effect the urinary track, I thought I would effect well, the other way! haha. I''m going to call the vet tomorrow. It certainly is more difficult as she gets older. I couldn''t imagine loosing her and when something odd like this comes up I always think the worst.

If you think of anything else let me know. Once again thank you so much for your help. Goodnight all!

My dog has what seems to be the same problem. She''s 2 years old and she''s spayed. Just before she turned 1, we noticed she would wake up with a puddle under her whenever she was sleeping. She had never done it before, and all of a sudden out of nowhere she started doing it every time she was sleeping or relaxing, and she had no idea. Like someone else mentioned, it''s simply a hormone imbalance and is treated with hormone replacement. I''m not sure if it''s the same thing for your dog but it definitely sounds like it. But there are several things it could also be, like a urinary tract infection. I would definitely take her to the vet as soon as possible, but it doesn''t sound like a major emergency so don''t get too worried.

Phew, you all have really made me feel better. Heidi and xapora the hormone issue sounds like it could be it. She is spayed (has been for about 4 years now) and it just came on so suddenly. Xapora it sounds very similar to what your dog had. She also doesn''t even wake up or flinch when she had her accidents. You all definitely made it much easier for me to sleep tonight. Hopefully it is something that can be fixed easily by the vet.

Thanks again, everyone. I''ll keep you updated.

I would definitely get her checked by a vet ASAP, this is not normal and needs to be checked out.

Hello everyone! I just called the vet and I''ll be dropping Bubbles off tomorrow morning for x-rays and tests. They said that it could even be kidney stones.

Hopefully by the end of the day tomorrow we will know what''s going on.

Thanks again for your help

Please keep us posted.

Keep us posted on how it goes! Our smaller dachsie Dreamer got a urinary track infection, but that just made her pee all the time outside and strain a lot when trying to pee. She also peed a few times in the house, but never in her sleep or in her bed. Most dogs hate to soil their sleeping spot so it sounds like something other than housetraining problems or a UTI with your puppy.

I'm sure it can be fixed, that's what Vets are for! Man, though, the bills can be huge. Our Dreamer ate some mushrooms or some other toxin and was in the hospital for 3 days and almost died and the bill was $800. We didn't mind at all, her little life is worth way more than that, but just be prepared for that possbility if they have to do anything major to help your little one!

PS--she is such a cutie! Does she play well with your bigger boy? That is the funniest image of them together, they look like little buddies. Our two dogs are little buddies but they are the same size. I love 2 dogs together, it is so sweet.

glad that you called the vet and that''s she''s going to be admitted for tests. As Lorelei said, that behaviour isn''t normal so she definitely needs to be checked out.

That''s what I was thinking dreamer_dachsie! It would be one thing is she was urinating a lot in the house, then I would think it was a disciplinary situation, but the fact she she would pee on what is essentially her "bed" is odd. I know they don''t like to do that. And the fact that she doesn''t even wake up is odd.

It is expensive I contacted the vet to see what the damage to the wallet would be. About $400 for the tests and consultation. I don''t know if that is normal or not, but I really just want her to be better so I''m willing to pay what I need to make her better.

And she DOES play well with Brooklyn. I think it helps that she is older and brooklyn was a puppy (and close to her size!) when she came to live with me. Bubbles is DEFINATLY the more dominant one of the two. It''s funny because Brooklyn doesn''t get along with any other dog except for Bubbles. (I think it''s the part Chow in her) They are adorable together. Even playing tug of war, Bubbles will get on the couch and Brooklyn will be on the floor careful not to pull too hard on the toy so that Bubbles can play with her.

We will see how it goes. It''s funny how close you get to your animals. If I were to do it all over again I don''t think I would have gotten 2 dogs at my age as they are so expensive and I''m just starting out. But I honestly couldn''t imagine my life without the little critters. They make me so happy.

Thanks again everyone for your input and help. It''s nice to hear some other opinions and thoughts. When she started getting ill last night I called my BF and he suggested I look up her symptoms on the internet and the first place I went to was here. I thought with all of the knowledge on PS, someone must have dealt with something similar! haha.

Hope you don''t mind if I put up another photo for you to see the little one! Here she is at Christmas. It''s one of the few times I can dress her up without being picked on by my BF!

and to not be outdone, here is Brooklyn. Part Chow, part Lab (we think). She is almost 5.

Thay are so cute! I love dogs.

As for cost, it really really varies by the vet. We happened to find a really great vet who is very inexpensive and top quaility (through our breeder and other family members), but we know of other vets that charge 2X the price for similar tests etc. I know we pay $50 for a consult then per test on top of that. Blood word seems to be about $20 $30 per test, x-rays were about $80 each one, then medicines and fluids etc. If you are concerned about price you can absolutely "shop around" to other vets that come recommended by people you trust. But if you like your vet, then just go with who you trust and get bubbles looked after.

Brooklyn is beautiful! And Bubbles, the dear lil thing!! Is she drinking excess amounts of water? An infection in her urinary tract is entirely possible. This is probably a really gross question, but is her pee really... stinky?! Either way if she is her norma bubbly self that is reassuring!

I''m so chuffed I''ve found someone else with a small dog called Bubbles too!!

Well, I just dropped her off. They will be giving me a call later on today. Hopefully it is something that we can take care of easily.

Thanks for your compliments on my puppies! I think the are adorible as well, but I''m a little biased. dreamer_dachsie, I definatly think I''m goign to start "shopping around" with vets but unfortunatly the BF and I don''t have many dog owning friends down here to see who they recoomend. (We just moved to Miami about 2 years ago). I did talk to my SIL who works at a vet''s office in DC and she said that the price that I was quoted seems about right.

Oh well, what really matters is the health of my dog it just looks like I''ll have to be a bit more frugle this month.

DandiAndi, you have a dog named Bubbles too??? My friends always laugh when I first tell them her name... and then when I say that the other dog''s name is Brooklyn... well that always gets a laugh and a head shake. haha. I''m not seeing her drink alot of water and her pee seems to be pretty normal... I mean, it doesn''t smell like roses but I haven''t noticed anything different. hahaha

I have my cell phone by me awaiting thier call, so hopefully I''ll hear some good news in a few hours.

Oh the poor little baby! I hope she''s ok!!

How did the vet visit go? Were they able to diagnose her?

I have a newfie who is prone to struvite crystals in his urine (same symptoms as a urinary tract infection) which is caused by his Ph levels being too low. When I explained the symptoms they listed about 5 things it could be, sounds like you''re in a similar boat! Hope the visit went well and she''s feeling better!

Well, little Bubbles is back to her old self and back at home! She had to be sedated for some of the tests yesterday so last night she could barely walk... poor thing looked like she had too much to drink! haha

Turns out that she does have a UTI and is now in antibiotics. However the doctor said that the UTI could be caused by a hormone deficiency. The hormone deficiency prevents the muscles of the bladder to hold in urine. And the vet said that because the muscles are weak, foreign materials could get into the urinary track hence causing the UTI. But he doesn't want to give her the hormone treatment pills quite yet as there are side effects to taking them. Might as well see if it's just the UTI that is causing the troubles and if it happens again we will know to put her on the Hormone pills.

NEL- The doctor mentioned the possibility of crystals. Luckily they checked her and saw no signs. I can imagine that wouldn't be pleasant for your poor dog.

Is it similar to stones? BTW your dog is SO beautiful!

So, Bubbles is on antibiotics and still isn't 100% but I'm SO happy to hear it isn't something more serious. Thank you all for your help (and Bubbles thanks you too!)

Thanks for the update, good thing you took her in so quickly. She should be feeling better soon.

I''m glad it wasn''t more serious!

Both Brooklyn and Bubbles are beautiful! I love doggies...

delighted to hear that it wasn''t more serious!
