So Thursday night after playing at the dog park Max started limping. He actually wouldn''t put any weight on his back leg. Took him to the vet Friday (I thought about waiting a day or two to see if it would heal but since he wouldn''t bear weight at all decided just to take him in, especially since we would be going over a weekend) Appearantly he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and we have been referred to a specialty clinic and he will probably need tibial plateau leveling osteotomy surgery. Where, if I understand it correctly, they basically cut off the top of the tibia, reposition it, and attach some hardware to hold the bones together. Obviously it sounds painful and the full recovery time is about 3-5 months before they are back to full physical activity. I was wondering if anyone else has had this surgery on their dog and what their experiences were?
Thanks!

My dog, Biscuit, had this surgery several years ago. I have to warn you that it looks gruesome right after the surgery. At least it did on Biscuit. He is very large, and his having to be shaved and have incisions over an area that looked (to me) like half his body seemed like a lot of dog to be affected. He recuperated fully. After a couple of years something, I am not sure what, has not been quite right with that leg since then, however. And we did take him to another veterinary orthopedic specialist.

Oh! Poor baby.

No I haven''t had any experience with that kind of surgery... but I did want to say that I am very relieved to hear that an expert will be handling the surgery... when my cat was sick, our regular vet tried to handle the procedure and really did not do a good job, so when it had to be redone... we went with an expert and what a difference... both in the result and the healing time. Make sure the expert you''ve been referred to is the best in your area for the surgery, it''s worth it.

Hi Tiffany

My best friend has an old lab that had this surgery a couple of years ago, when she was still quite elderly. She is absolutely fine, and pain free now. She runs around like a silly puppy most of the time. Good luck to your baby

I have no experience with this surgery but I hope everything goes okay for Max and he is on the mend soon...
