oops wrong foru,m!

ACTUALLY... it wasnt the wrong forum!OOPS, HERE IS MY Q:

Hi everyone, so I understand that an excellent cut plays the most important role in the amount a diamond sparkles- however does a diamond have to be triple x (excellent in cut, polish, and symmetry) in order to have the most fire? Does an Excellent rating in polish and/or symmetry REALLY play a role in a diamond's sparkle?

Just curious!

I think very good is acceptable for polish. But I would want excellent for symmetry for sure. Others will say that very good is okay for either of those. Still, I prefer XXX when possible.

If you would like to read more about polish and symmetry it is under the knowledge tab, then advanced tutorial section. Generally a Very Good is acceptable because most people don't see the difference between excellent or ideal polish and very good. Sometimes a lab will drop the polish grade if only a few facets are not perfectly polished. I agree with diamond seeker on symmetry.

No, polish and symmetry don't matter much. You can drop as low as "Good" and most people cannot see the difference from Ex with theur eyes.

Great question Heather.
I agree with Dreamer_d in terms of raw physical characteristics.
However it's important to remember market forces with something as costly as a diamond.
Today, round diamonds can earn GIA's EX cut grade- which has a large impact on the price.
Therefore cutters really need to consider things one might not be able to see naked eye in the cutting to achieve VG or EX in Polish and symmetry. It makes good sense, on any fine round diamond to advise consumers to look for the EX cut grade, issued by GIA.

Fancy Shapes are a totally different story.
There is no GIA Fancy Shape cut grade, and many very fine fancy shaped makes ( well cut stones) have merely "Good" polish and symmetry.
