Does this sound like a good RB for my trade?

My husband purchased my diamond e-ring from a jeweler in Austin. It’s a beautiful diamond, but a bit small (even for my little size 3 finger) and I’m looking to upgrade with the same jeweler (trade-up, so we get the money paid for the ring - $2300).

My current stone (all the info. I have on me at the moment):

Shape: RB
Color: E
Carat: .52
Clarity: SI1 (eye clean)
Measurements: 5.14 – 5.11 x 3.26mm

The stone I’m looking into:

Shape: BR
Color: F
Carat: .72
Clarity: SI1 (eye clean)
Measurements: 5.74 -5.68 x 3.56mm
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Depth: 62
Table 59
Cost: $3770

Diff in price, $1440.00

Gosh, my diamod is modest compared to a lot that I see on this site.

Does this sound reasonable?

Do a search here on PriceScope to compare stones. Numerous online stores link their stones to this website. Keep in mind that stones generally sell for less online than in the store.

Does the new stone have a cert? Does your old one?

I searched for 0.72 F SI1 stones with depths of 61-63 and tables of 58-60. The EGL certed stones range from $2196 to $2357 and the GIA certed stones range from $2159 to $2922.

Of course, it sounds like you paid the same mark-up on your original ring (did $2300 include the setting as well?). I'm calculating your stone's depth as 63.6, so when I searched for 0.52 E SI1 stones with a depth of 63-64, the range was $1099 to $1823.

Obviously, the lab that graded the stone (if any), the cut quality of the stones, and many other factors will determine exactly how much the stones would/should sell for. I definitely think the relatively better depth on your new stone is a plus (although you could be more in the 60 or 61 range and get a bigger looking stone). If you were a person looking for a brand new stone from any vendor, I would probably recommend looking elsewhere for more competitive pricing, but since you're doing a trade-in, I would try to negotiate a little bit with the info you've discovered here. Maybe bring a print out of the other 0.72 F SI1 stones that I mentioned (with a variety of vendors to show it's not an anomaly.) The difference in the averages of the stones is about $1100, so $1440 might mean the vendor is trying to up the new stone's price to get more profit (or it might just mean the F stone is a better cut quality and should cost more).

P.S. Your current ring looks very nice! Since your finger is so small, I think a 3/4 carat stone will look huge!

P.P.S. I'm just a consumer who likes crunching numbers (but I'm an English teacher, so my number-crunching skills should be questioned). Hopefully some vendors or appraisers will chime in on how they would price these stones.

I think your current ring looks great on your hand!! I might hold off on the upgrade for a little while if you are still happy with it.

Yes I also think your diamond doesn''t look small on your finger. It''s actually quite visible and without knowing your finger size one could easily mistake the diamond for a bigger one.

i guess the question would be.... is a 0.6mm difference worth $1400? does the stone you are considering look bigger to you?

phoenixgirl - Thanks for the info. And to answer your question, the $2300 was just for the diamond, not the setting.

My quest to upgrade came after I went to Diamond Cutters International to have my setting inspected --Just for kicks, the sales guy showed me what a well cut diamond (since mine is cut a little deep) would look like in comparison to my diamond. I was shown a perfect cut .69/G/VS and it looked HUGE in my finger! It was oh so beautiful! This WAS the diamond of my dreams! Ever since, I''ve been dreaming of trading up....

You mentioned negotiating the price - do people do that??? Boy, I''ve got a lot to learn.

kbaker - Thank you!

belle - To answer your question, I haven''t seen the stone in person yet. The jeweler is in another city - about a 3 hour drive away. I wanted to get as much info as I can first, before heading out there.

Don''t worry about your diamond being modest.

I originally had a 0.38ct rb. I bought a 0.55ct rb and recently traded it up to a 0.72ct rb. There was a 0.5mm difference in size. To me, it is only slightly more noticeably bigger (but I also have size 6 fingers). I wish I had gotten something a bit bigger. If you eventually want something even bigger then I would hold out.

Just my non-expert opinion.
