I would love to buy a cushion cut diamond and have it set into a pendant for myself. My jeweller doesn''t have what I want so I thought I would look myself. I''ve never really search for something like this so I''m a tad nervous. I was wondering if this sounds like a pretty good diamond. I was also wondering if someone could give me a ballpark figure for this stone. I already have a price quote for this particular diamond but was wondering if it was a good deal or not.

Carat: 5.02
Colour: G
Clarity: IF
Measurements: 9.58 x 9.46 x 6.39mm
Depth: 67.5%
Table: 70%
Symmetry: Good
Polish: Good
Fluorescence: Medium
Length/Width ratio: 1.01

Your opinions and advice are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

5 carats? Dare I ask how much?

Haha... no you don''t dare! Of course I''m kidding. I was quoted a little over $240,000 for this stone. Is that too much?

Another question I forgot to ask was do cushions tend to look smaller or larger than their actually carat weight? I''ve never had a cushion so I''m not at all familiar with them or their characteristics.

I am trying to learn more about cushion cuts right now as I am thinking of buying one - but not as big as this! Anyhow, my question on this stone is: does it face up sort of small for a 5ct stone? People with more expertise than I will know best. Also that table seems very large at 70%. Most of the ones I am looking at have smaller tables, considerably so.

On a different thing, the stone you list will be very expensive but especially more so b/c of the IF rating. For a pendant I would not pay for an IF rating, unless that is a characteristic that has a lot of meaning to you.

I haven''t and idea for the price, but it''s well into low 6 figures anyhow.

I guess there aren''t too many experts on the cushions cut here. Oh well. Since these places have a solid return policy I''ll just buy that one along with a few others and send the ones I don''t like back.

Thanks for the advice Beacon.

Welcome PP!

There aren't any set numbers or proportions which will guarantee you a well cut cushion unfortunately, also there are so many variables as to how the cushion will look and perform, so it is best if you look at as many as you can, and see what attributes you prefer. In the carat weight you are looking at, available cushions will be in short supply anyway, so go with what you find beautiful, especially as you will be comparing diamonds in person. Does it have a GIA report, or from any other lab?

Thanks Lorelei, I appreciate the feedback. The stones I have looked at all have GIA certification, in fact I tend to only look at those. I will view a few in person and make my choice from there.

Thanks again.

Ditto others that cushions have to be seen. The diameter that you posted on that 5 carat stone is more like a 3 1/2 round brilliant (FWIW) If this one doesn''t work out, try calling Mark at Engagement Rings Direct and he may be able to find you a killer stone with that budget!
