I''ll confess: My eyes hurt from reading the forum. My fingers, from dialing and searching maniacally. Oh, that the quest for the perfect asscher would be over soon...

For now: I''ve located a stone that I "like"; It''s not love at first sight, but at this point, I am liable to think that the overhead lighting has been rigged to make it appear like love at first sight. Skepticism seems inevitable once we''ve read the GOG website warning of all the possible missed variables of working with a local area jeweler if we are unfortunate enough not to live in the NYC metro area :)

I know, I know...numbers don''t tell the whole story for asschers or other fancy cuts, but I''ll post them here just in case. Pictures below that. I have seen the stone in person (not that it helped a layman like me), and my three greatest concerns are table size (a bit open for the amount of action I''d like to see), and crown height, which does not appear in the GIA report, but which my jeweler "eyeballed" at around 12%. Also, the total depth seems a tad on the high end of the range..I also think I could probably get a little more spread if I tried real hard :) Also, are asschers supposed to have culets? BNs "signature ideal cut" shows a culet, for what that is worth.

The one thing I did really like was seeing 5 step cuts rather than the normal 3, which did give it more life, and more closely resembled a RA than others I''ve seen. Anyway, here''s hoping someone can tell me if I can barking up the wrong asscher. Thanks so much to everyone in advance!

PS. I''ve been quoted $7,900, though I think there is a little room there (push comes to shove, $7500 might do the trick). I''m hoping to arrange the whole thing for under $8500 with a custom made, four prong (with double claw), pinched, channel setting, reminiscent of the now well-known 1920 Cartier paradigm.

i think this pic would make any stone look blah, (so much dust, looks like inclusions)...but still, straight on.

How are my windmills?
Is the table, indeed, too large?
Can I do better for my $7500-$7900?

Greatly indebted to any replies from the generous experts.

p4 facet is at a bad angle (bottom facet on the pavilion) allowing it too go too dark center.
It was cut for weight then the cutter tried too salvage the depth% and failed.

4 step pavilions don''t have more life than 3 steps properly cut it makes no difference too the life of the stone.
Bad p3(3step) or p4(4step) angles however does kill the life of the stone.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I thought you might say something of the sort - I never had a great feeling about it, but I wanted for it to be good. Alas. I''ve emailed Jon @ GOG for some of his stones, but haven''t heard back from him yet. Last I heard, he had a 1.27 and a 1.33 in the same range, though with a slightly lower inclusion stat. I wont bother posting his stone, since you''re probably pretty sick of confirming that "he is good at this, trust him."

Was the price right for a stone of good cutting ilk?

The exact same stone is on the PS search engine:
1.20 E VS1 70.8% 63% GIA stk-tk no vg ex no 5.92x5.68x4.02 $7012

You should be able too do better in your budget range.

Post the ones Jon recomends I like keeping him on his toes :}
