Does the GOG temporary mounting count for UPS purposes as jewelry and not a loose stone?

I'm going to be sending my stone (which is unbelievable btw, will post pictures tonight) to Leon and am trying to figure out if I can send the stone UPS overnight instead of USPS registered mail.

Also, will my appraiser remove it from the mounting and then put it back for me after the appraisal is over?

Sorry if it's a dumb newbie question, but I couldn't find anything when I searched the old posts.

Thanks!

I think you can send it UPS overnight if it''s under a certain amount. Do you have your ring insured. USPS will be quite a bit cheaper though. I think the appraiser can then send it loose under their insurance to Leon so it wouldn''t be necessary to remount it but you should ask them to be sure.

Not insured yet. I just got the stone today (like an hour and half ago!) and will have it appraised tomorrow. I''ll email my appraiser to see if he can send it for me. Thanks for the suggestion!

The spring clip mounting is NOT a UPS acceptable mounting. The correct answer is do not send it UPS.

The best overnight shipment for consumers of a loose diamond is USPS Express Mail, but only up to $5,000 cost value.

Other wise, use Registered Mail and plan on it taking a few days.

Thank you for the clarification. I could have made a huge mistake there. It was over $5,000 so USPS registered it is then!

Your appraiser may have outside insurance that allows them to ship overnight to the designer and many of the designers prefer to receive loose stones from appraisers rather than directly from consumers anyway for security reasons. I second the suggestion of asking you appraiser if he can ship it on your behalf after he/she has completed their work. Of course, if you have to ship to the appraiser first, I''ll second the USPS registered solution for that shipment but still have the appraiser ship directly from their lab to the designer if you can.

The same is true at the end, when you want to complete the appraisal on the finished ring. If you have the designer ship directly to the appraiser and have the appraiser submit the report to you by email you can bind the policy before you even pick it up. The chain of custody goes from the appraiser to the carrier (using the appraisers insurance), to the designer, back to the carrier (using the designer’s insurance this time), back to the appraiser. Your insurance takes over the instant you pick it up from the appraiser. This gives you full coverage the entire time.

Thank you for the information! That was really helpful! Now I just need to hear back from the appraiser.

glad you clarified Dave. I assumed the stone was set in a regular cheap setting we often call temp settings in order to insure the ring so it would be covered during the re-set not that the stone was in spring clip mounting. sorry for my mistake Lisamarie..

HI,
YOu can send it USPS registered mail and insure it for up to $25,000. If you opt for the priority mail option, then it is supposed to arrive in 2 to 3 days. Just remember that you have to use Brown tape as they only accept brown tape for registered mail.

Good luck! And don''t forget to post the pictures of the completed ring!

Can someone explain spring clip mounting v. temporary setting?

Thanks.

a spring clip is just a holder. the diamond is not secured into the setting. many vendors will send stones out to be viewed in a spring clip. When I think of temp setting, i think of an inexpensive solitaire that some folks buy to propose with and then the couple chooses a permanent setting together.

No problem. I''m glad Dave knew what I was talking about because it was my fault for not describing GOG''s mounting properly.

sorry about the underline.....typing one handed strange things happen (holding baby with other hand)

Thanks so much, Lisamarie. :)

(I really don''t call that a mounting...I call it a stone holder!)

Registered mail is registered mail. My PO said there is no way to make registered faster.

There is a registered priority mail option, it is supposed to be faster than regular registered mail. I actually paid for it, it cost me an extra $6.55 to send it that way.

Not that it made a difference, it still took 5 days to get there.

All registered mail travels the same way, under lock and key and it needs to get signed for at every transfer. That''s why it''s so secure but also why it''s a bit slow. The ONLY difference between priority registered and first class registered is the price.
