So recently BF took the plunge and bought me a lovely .90 (6.16x6.24), H, SI1. It is beautiful, sparkley, and has no visible inclusions. The opportunity has come about to buy a diamond of higher color and lower clarity (though supposedly absolutely eye clean) for the the same amount and it is bigger. This diamond is 1.03 (6.46x6.48). Now I haven''t even been officially proposed to and I already have DSS! So what do you think? Is the visible diff large enough to warrant an upgrade? Should I be concerned about a diamond lower in clarity but eye clean? Help!

Well it would depend... How well are the diamonds cut? Color and clarity have less to do with how well the diamond sparkles than the cut.

I''m going to be honest and say that its unlikely you will see any difference in the size. What is the colour on the new one?

I think the most important thing about buying a diamond is how well cut the diamond is. Is one diamond better cut than the other? Next I would say that you need a diamond that is eye-clean or when set you won''t be able to see inclusions. Than I would say color.

The diamond you have is clarity S1 which is on the boderline of being eye-clean. I am not sure what the clarity is of the new diamond, sometimes S12 is eye-clean but not always.

I think that size does matter but not at the expense of the cut or an eye clean diamond. There isn''t going to be a huge difference in noticeable size between those two diamonds so I''m not sure if I would upgrade, unless the cut is better in the larger stone.

It depends on many things, I assume by lower in clarity, the new diamond is either an SI2 or I1? Which lab graded these diamonds - the one you have and the one you are considering, GIA, AGS or other? Apart from that, the proportions of each diamond could be useful, but assuming both are well cut and reliably lab graded, then unless you want to make that leap to over a carat, you may not see much difference with the size.

I am not sure that is a big enough difference that you will even notice, but if the stone is not eye clean you will most likely notice that. I think that you should post a bit more info (which lab graded, how well these stones are cut...) and then maybe more people will chime in.

Eh. I doubt you''ll notice a size difference, unless it''s cut really shallow. At that point you''re probably best off looking at the two diamonds side by side and seeing which one looks more beautiful to your eye.

As with everyone else, that minimal of a size difference isn''t going to be very noticeable. I would not go bigger if the larger diamond just wasn''t cut as well, or had inclusions that I could see.

I wonder if maybe this is a psychological thing, since the new diamond is over 1.00 ct.?
