Does my Tiffany ring look misshapen

I'm sorry if this is not the right place to post this. I previously added it to the end of my RockyTalky thread but I think only a couple of people saw it (and I am grateful for their comments), but it's not actually about a diamond, so perhaps it didn't belong there. I am stressing out about this and having radio silence from Tiffany, so...

I inherited this Tiffany ring and sent it directly to Tiffany to be sized down. I didn't take photos stupidly, but I had a good look at it and the band seemed a similar width all the way around, perhaps a slight taper but not very noticeable. As far as I know it's never been worked on by anyone other than Tiffany and had been in a safe for years.

I got it back from Tiffany looking like this. The base looks really thin. There are other things that made me think it was rushed / careless eg the stamp half polished out and no tracking when it was sent back to me (left in my open porch all day!)

I took it back to store and they ummed and ahhed and said maybe it was a bit thin, but it does taper. They pulled out other rings and this did look thinner. It's been sent back a week ago to the service centre.

Trouble is I've heard nothing since and am really worried that they'll either tell me it's fine when it's not, or that it's not right but they can't do anything as the metal has been removed and I'll just have to live with it.

I've tried contacting them again but while I wait for a reply, I'd be really grateful if someone could tell me if this looks normal or not. If not, do you think Tiffany can fix it? My trust in them is shot after last time. Thank you in advance. (PS second photo is alongside the matching knife edge wedding band that I got from the RealReal thanks to a tip off from a lovely PSer on my other thread!)

While I agree it doesn't look right, especially with the wedding ring example, I don't know what they'd be willing to do next. They did say it's supposed to taper but I'd expect to see the taper match their usual inventory model. If not, it could be reset or re-shanked. I don't know if they'd do either, but hopefully it comes back better than last time.

I guess my other question was - if there's nothing that they can / will do, can I still wear the ring daily and expect it to hold up over time? I suppose no one will see on the palm side, but the thinness worries me. I am gentle with rings (currently wear a plain gold band, but when I have worn gem rings I take them off for showering, housework, cooking, gardening, sleep etc), but would like to be able to wear this daily.
 
Absolutely. you can wear the ring! I've never worn out even a thin shanked ring. I wouldn't wear it to bed because that can wear on the prongs, but no reason not to wear it.
 
Yeah it’s safe to wear as it is. I don’t see why it would get thinner with sizing down but maybe someone got a little over excited I the polish.

This is the second negative story we’ve heard about Tiffany sizing in the past few months.

Thank you all. That's very reassuring. As long as it holds up, I don't mind what the underside looks like.

Yes I could understand the thinning if it was being made bigger, but it was sized down. I think the overpolishing theory is probably right.

I was thinking though - if it did need to be made bigger, wouldn't they need to add metal? Could they not do the same here ie cut out the thin segment and replace it with a thicker bit as if it was being sized up?
 
In my experience their repair service can be really hit or miss. They resized a solitaire for me back in 2021 and I thought it came back looking a little wonky also. Nothing I ever did anything about but I expected better. But they've sized two bands for me since and been perfect.
 
Yes,they could do a partial re-shanking but then you may completely loose the “Tiffany & Co” stamp. Does that matter to you or not? It’s a shame they thinned it so much when they sized it. My only concern would be it going even more out of round with wear because of the malleability of platinum. Not that you would wear it out. Very interested to hear what they will tell you.

I assumed that they could just re-stamp it? Considering they are literally Tiffany & Co! I sort of thought that would be typical after any resizing / repair and polish, that the stamp would need to be re-done or "topped up" but I might be wrong. I had my wedding ring resized by a local shop and they needed to re-do the engraving, they told me upfront they would and it was fine.

Hmm that's a good point re malleability and going out of round :(

I had a jeweler in Vegas to that to a platinum ring. it's so much thinner on the palm side and I hate myself for not raising a stink. Where did all that metal go? But I don't live anywhere close. Creeps.
 
I'm sorry you had a bad experience too :( I just hope it goes to someone who takes it seriously and tries to fix it.

I hope that it does go to someone who will take it seriously and make it right. I didn't complain on that particular repair but I did on another one and I would just say if you are not happy be persistent and keep moving up the chain. I also had better results when I dealt with the repair department in NY via their telephone line than when trying to deal with the store.
 
Well dang it @Maya1307, so sorry about this! I really hope Tiffany comes through on this for you. You'd think they'd be able to make this right. But as others have said, it will be perfectly fine to wear it as is. Keep us posted!
 
They fixed it!!! So relieved. Fits perfectly now, and the stamps / hallmarks are all clear. I guess I just got someone rogue last time. Very pleased. Thanks for all the supportive comments.

Although, looking closely at the before and after photo, I'm rather wondering if they just remounted it? I don't care - it's the same diamond and that's what matters to me :)

It looks wonderful. Not sure about the resetting or fixing the old setting but I wouldn't worry about it. All round and hallmarks good so win/win! Enjoy your ring!

Thank you - they've done a perfect job with it now so I'm very happy.

To answer your questions, it ended up being a case of just ringing the service center multiple times until I got through to someone helpful, who listened and then liaised with the repair team. My emails from 4-5 weeks ago still haven't had a reply. As mustangchi commented above, the repair service seems really hit and miss, but hopefully I won't need to use them again in future.

It looks really good, my solitaire is a little wonky from when they sized it about 4 years ago but I never did anything with it.

I agree the best plan is to keep calling the service center directly

@mustangchi please take it back if it bothers you, I am really glad I did rather than living with it. I bet they could fix it xx
