Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly grade

I had finally decided to just enjoy my EGL International graded 2.41 studs.

when I went to a B&M store that was originally helping me get my studs (prePS) I am now looking at studs for my friend and went to visit the jeweler so she can try on stud sizes,

He noticed my earrings and said "I noticed you bought earrings, they look like K color to me from here. I can tell right away." then he said "oh you must have bought EGL International stones because my EGL USA stones are true F"..

I am freaking out. I had an independent jeweler look at the studs before I finalized my deal with the other B&M and he said without taking the stones out of their settings that they

stone 1 was in his opinion H color s12

stone 2 was I color s13 (in EGL terms)

So should I freak out... it is after the 10 day return period from the original B&M . My studs have lots of fire and I love them... First I think the original jeweler is happy to get rid of his EGL Int stones and I think today's eweler is having "sour Grapes" because I didn't buy his GIA I color I clarity 2.11 total carat for $11,000 ....

I really don't want to part with my stones for two weeks and pay to have GIA certify them. Can EGL International be so lax that my stones are K instead of the F & G on their certification. Please help me feel better . Thanks

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly g

Question: is the price you paid IN LINE with a GIA K? Either way, your jeweler is being inappropriate, but at the end if the day, the important thing is that you love your stones, and that you fidnt'y overpay.

Man, I don't appreciate that petty behavior. I went into a high end CT jeweler and wanted a 3rd band to wear above my ER & 2 thin eternities. Instead of just heling me with that, he felt compelled to mention that he would never have mad my eternities with such thin walls. - OMG - way to not make a sale. Who asked YOU? He lost the sale.

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly g

You love them and I wouldn't let someones opinion cause you to love them less. That said, an independent jeweler isn't the same as an independent appraiser who has absolutely no interest in the stone at all. In your case I think that it would be wrong to accept the opinion of either jeweler, the one who sold them to you, or the one that wanted to. The only way to get an accurate unbiased opinion on the grading is by taking them to a trusted independent appraiser. Unfortunately this is the problem with EGL, but you knew that anyway.

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly g

Julie they are EGL International certified which we all know is at least two grades - four grades lower than GIA/AGS so I knew they were lower than stated

However, do tell me he would have gotten me the same stones as I got for less and better quality even EGL USA would have gotten me better color stones.

then I told him Stop I am happy and for my budget $10,000 I wanted ideal cut stones with lots of flash and he wanted me to have GIA certified stones 2.11 I color I clarity for $11,000 so I picked the larger stones with EGL international certifications.....

I am now second guessing myself and the husban doesn't want to know anything about it.

Circe the price I paid is in line with H-I color S12 -I 1 clarity although the jeweler appraised them and was selling them at $14,500 I paid $10,000 8,000 cash and the rest my old studs (valued at $2,000)

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly g

Yes Christina I took them to an independant appraisar not affiliated with either and got a verbal appraisal before I paid the rest of the earrings.

This entire time I was a little uneasy as I knew that EGL was very loose in grading and the B&M where I bought had a a price tag of $14,500 on the 2.41 studs, which was in line with the "Certificates" if they were truly F-G SI1 color (even though they were EGL).. That being said

I couldn't use an E dealer as I had to sell gold, trade in and have no way of using credit credit cards... so I had to finagle my financing which is why I went to B& M.......(I buy gold for a living so i had to sell stuff to my boss) complicated.

Bottom line I knew at paying $8,000 cash and my studs was much lower than his asking price of $14,500. so I thought that I was okay.

The indepenta appraisar gave me a price of $9,500 so I m okay with what I paid.

does that make send

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my EGL studs badly g

You hired an expert that YOU vetted and that you trust to do the grading who inspected the stones in person. He/she said H-SI2 and I-SI3.

Who cares what EGLI said?
Who cares what EGL-USA might have said?
Who cares what some jewelry store worker who didn't even grade them said?

You're happy with the product, you're happy with the price and you're happy with the value. What, exactly, is the problem here? You did fine, be happy.

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly g

EGL USA is known to be 1 to 2 grades off for colors. EGL international is very inconsistent and can be 4 grades off. Either way, if they don't look yellow to you and you are happy then we are all good.

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly g

Okay that helped We woman second guess ourselves and being a PS I feel that maybe I should a woulda coulda

but I do love them and your right I am going to love them and think that he is just upset that his store was robbed three days ago a guy came in and ripped at $70,000 uninsured ring out of the store owners hand and ran out of the store. Maybe when I came into he was annoyed.

sour grapes be gone thanks Denver apprasar

He even pulled out two EGL USA stones F color to put next to mine to show me they were yellow I was so put off

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly g

I guess I am out of it, but it does seem like trading in 2 ctw studs that you like for 2.41 tcw studs AND 8K is an awful lot of money. Is the size difference that important to you? As it doesn't seem to have any better clarity or color, is the cutting better as well? Only you can answer if it is worth it, or you find the earrings that much more attractive to you than your original.

Re: Does Jeweler have sour grapes or is my ESL studs badly g

Part Gypsey My original studs very poorly cut and had no fire in them at all....the size wasn't as important as was the brillance of the stones. but you are right if i was going to spend thousands more I might as well go up in size along with the cut and although they are EGL International Certified I did want a certified stones. So I got exactly what I wanted the difference from 1.02 to 1.21 was a big jump in size on my tiny lobes. So I guess it is what you want to spend your money on. I used my studs and jewelry that my mom gave me when she passed that has been sitting in the vault for 11 years. No one wanted them so I sold them and now I gorgous studs to pass on to my daughter instead of 4 pieces brooches and ugly bracelets .
