Hi,

what do you think is colour more important and more noticable in larger diamond than in say a 0.75 ct diamond?

Yes color is more noticeable in larger stones than smaller. I stones under a ct I wouldn't hesitate to suggest a j to someonen who really cares about getting as much size as they can. I personally have a .84 k and I've never been unhappy with the amount of "color " it shows. I say "color" because it has never appeared yellow to me in all the time I've had it in an unplated white gold setting.

I just yesterday recieved my J color 0.6ct diamond.
I am shocked that it looks so white. I just compared it to a F color equal size and I could not see the difference, the F was only super slightly whiter, but I really had to look to see it. Also it was set in a ring and mine is loose, but I am really happy I got the J, because that way I could get a bigger diamond!

One of my cousins just got a 1 carat J color Whiteflash ACA in her ring and it's hard for me to see any color in that stone, either. It's in a solitaire setting and it looks amazingly white. The only time I've seen it look colorful is when it's reflecting the room color or what she's wearing (like red, and obviously the stone isn't red at all).

I can handle a J when under 0.4 ct but I can see the warmth in a 0.7 ct.

It depends on 3 things;
1. How well you can see the colour
2. Even if you see the colour, where does your tolerance lie
3. < 0.75 ct is a still a large range and I prefer to limit that further.

As others mentioned, the smaller the diamond, the less obvious the warmth will be, which is why for me, anything less than 0.4 ct is still colourless, if graded accurately. A well cut stone goes a long way in tamping down the colour when face up as well.

I have a 0.59ct AVR I color, and I can almost never see any tint in it at all. Whereas I can see the J color in my 1ct emerald cut. Step cuts show color more naturally anyway. But the AVR is so well cut that the amount of light coming out of it just masks the I color so well it makes me wonder if it was graded correctly!

Whether the color in I/J/K diamonds less than 0.75ct *matters* is something only you can decide - certainly, there is a color difference as compared to similar-sized higher-color diamonds, which will be more/less apparent depending on setting, environment, light, and vision acuity, as well as the specific diamond.
