i''m trying to understand - does fluor add color to the sparkle, or does it increase the sparkle - or neither?

i ordered a diamond with strong fluor, and the sparkles under small halogen lamps is amazing, and even out in strong sunlight it was pretty amazing when i moved the diamond around.

but i''m wondering, is this a function of the fluor, or is it because of the cut? this is the first diamond i''ve seen (haven''t looked at that many) that really seems alive. maybe my question is - is this diamond so much different from the others because of the cut, or because of the fluor? stats are here:

.68ct, gia h si1

table: 57
depth: 61.5
crown: 34.5
pav: 40.8

cut/sym/polish: ex/ex/ex

i''m just trying to understand if a better cut is what i''m really seeing here (more life) or if it''s fluor - or a little bit of both.

many thanks!

Hi gullice.
fluoro will not improve sparkle (scintillation) to my knowledge. It is , as you said, the quality of the cut which causes this effect.
With strong blue fluor, you may notice in direct sunlight that it will have a violet tinge or glow, which I think is also an added bonus.

thanks arjunajane... yeah, with mine it''s more like this powder blue... weird actually, odd, but... kind of cool! the clarity is still there, it''s not milky, but just... not what you''d expect. i really do like it. and i always do like things that are just a bit different, special in their own way.

with the scintillation in a good cut, does it generally show with a lot of color, or just white ''glints''? mine is showing a lot of color - kind of magic looking - so not sure if that''s just a better cut, or the fluor adds to the color.

thanks!

A well cut, balanced ideal cut stone will have a balance of fire and brilliance. Stones will larger table sizes can have less fire. But fluoro doesn''t effect sparkliness, that is all due to the CUT baby!

Fluoro can make the stone look a gorgeous blue in sunlight or black light. It can be a lovely characteristic, and one that many people strive for in their stones.

Flouresence has nothing to do with sparke of the stone. It can affect appearance of color in the diamond. It can affect the appearance in a positive way and mask a lower color, but it can also be a negative when to0 strong, it can create an oily appearance that inhibits the beauty of the stone. This mainly happens in stones with strong flouresance. It also can affect diamonds with high color(d-e-f).So look at the flouresance to color balance when researching the possible affects flouresance may have on appearance.

thanks everyone for the info - yeah - i think this was my first diamond where i actually saw what everyone''s talking about with cut! i''ve always had in my mind that i want something that looks alive, and everything up until now has been kind of flat, know what i mean?

ha! i also think i''ve just described my relationships - until now.
