Does faint fluorescence usually show up in the sun?

Mine does, even if the sky isn''t very blue it shows kind of a lilac blue-ish color. Does anyone else have faint fluorescence that they can see? I love the look and want medium to strong on my next stone purchase-- not for a long time of course. But I thought if it was faint that it wasn''t supposed to be detectable?

I have faint in mine, and I can definitely see it in some sunlight, I guess it depends.

I would say no, but I see that Lorelei does see it. So, I probably stand corrected at the same time.

Live long,
Ditto - Instinct would say not so much for faint. I have medium and only see it occasionally.
But I''d certainly be happy if I had faint and it showed. But I guess the other question would be "faint" in who''s book? ie. what lab was it graded by etc.

Out of interest, a question to Paul, or another expert who could answer - how subjective is the grading of fluorescence? Or is it something we can expect to be "across the board" with labs?

As a side note.....everyone around here should stop saying how much we desire fluoro in our stones...the vendors are listening sshhhhh

Grading of fluorescence is all over the board. The standard GIA scale looks like this:

None
Faint
Medium
Strong
Very Strong

There are no well defined boundaries. You will rarely find a stone that one grader calls very strong that another calls faint but crossing single boundaries like faint/medium, strong/very strong or none/faint are all quite common.

Thanks Neil for the info - thats kind of what I thought.
So, in other words Kelli''s "faint" could very easily be a medium..

hmm interesting.

I think I can detect some under certain lighting... and I love it! Mine is faint... it just glows really white!

I have faint as well and have never seen it, even in direct sunlight

And could be the case with mine too.

I have observed this myself that some diamonds rated as none or faint turn more blue in sunlight than some stones rated strong.
Since fluorescence is graded upside down I wonder if some diamonds produce more fluorescence face up than upside down and what factors can come into play.

That''s a good question. And it made me remember a thread where this very thing was discussed. If I can find it, I''ll post it. I think Diagem and/or one of the other prosposted to this. Lemme see....

Interesting point Strm!

Thanks for your replies everyone! I guess I was just curious as I''ve never seen a med/strong/very strong in the sun but I''d love to know what they look like. Two of my friends have diamonds and we all compared on a beach trip one day. Mine was clearly blue and theirs were not. My parents have commented on how blue it looks it the sun too, and the very second you step under a tree the blue changes to a nice bright white. And some days it''s more blue than others, but the uv index changes daily so that makes sense right?
