Hello PS,

i could really do with some more of your wonderful advise :)

im buying a pear cut stone. after learning all about H&A for my wifes ering i now appreciate the importance of cut. so this time i want a top notch cut for the pear stone. but im not willing to spend more than is ''visually'' necessary ie. im sure a stone of slightly lesser cut would look just as good once mounted etc than the one she has.

this time i just want something that looks top notch, it doesnt actually have to be the very pinicle. but then there is no set of numbers as to what is the best. i have looked on the AGA cut charts and found numbers that relate to different cut classes. should i be looking for cut class 1A/B? or can i be less selective?

the main reason this question arrises is that i assumed the easiest way to get a top notch pear is to ask a top notch vendor who loves pears.... which i have done. but i also just assumed that they would put forward stones that would fall within the class 1A/B catagory. unless i am using the system wrong, the stone seems to fall quite short of that. now i would find it very hard to believe that this vendor would even attempt to sell anything that wasnt top grade, and the pic looks good to me. so that makes me question how much i can rely on the cut charts....can they be THAT wrong? or am i using the chart ''THAT'' wrong?

i have a budget of around $1500 and i want a stone that wont look yellow. my wifes ering is a D, but they wont be worn side by side. as long as its eye clean and about 1.53 to 1.63 l/w ratio. so im thinking i will be getting a gia G SI1/2 about .5-6crt.....or does anyone think i should get F colour, esp as pears can apparently show more colour at times? i dont really want it less much 7mm long, so maybe i will have to up budget a little more if i dont want to just fall short of where im aiming?

so does the chart matter...am i using it right....am i aiming too high for something that will look just as good?

anyway, ill post the specs on the pear and if someone could tell me what they think then i would be very thankful.

shape; pear brilliant
meas; 6.52x4.53x2.49mm
weight 0.44
depth; 55.0%
table; 52.0%
girdle; med - vtk faceted
cutlet; none
polish; good
sym; good
clarity; vs2
colour; E
flor; none

i can attach the pic too, which has the gia cert on it too, but im not sure of the etiquette.

thanks

Cut always matters, but unlike RB''s the NUMBERS don''t matter as much. You really need to buy with your eyes with fancy cut stones. They can have great "numbers" on paper and be duds or they can be outside the realm of the "right" numbers and still be lookers.

Use ASET images from sites that provide them, or study them and get one if you are shopping in stores

Thanks Guys,

i wish there were some magic numbers though!!!

Don''t we all! Unfortunately you have to use your eyes with fancy cuts.

There aren''t unfortunately, but what you can do is to use this chart as a guide only - don''t get hung up on the numbers otherwise you could miss out on some beautiful stones you might love. Also work with a vendor who can provide ASET images and detailed photos of the diamonds as these will be needed in order to choose a pear - they can present very different appearances and shapes so you need these to get an idea of whether a particular pear is to your liking or not.
