I recently bought some beads on Etsy (aquamarine, jade, something else) with the intent of beading them myself. This is my first time trying to knot a string of beads though. Does anyone have advice for me?

Also, I have no idea if I got a good deal on the beads. I haven't even seen them yet. Does anyone have advice about where to shop for beads and findings? For reference, I live in the NYC suburbs.

6th avenue, between 42nd or so and 34th - there are about a hundred little bead and finding shops, and you should be able to find just about anything. I've spent many a happy hour browsing their wares. ;)

I love long beaded necklaces with small beads, the 3-6 mm range. I don't make them, but my favorite jeweler does, and she just got the coolest beads I've ever seen! She recently got:

Demantoid garnet
Mint garnet
Cat's eye Alex
"Regular" Alex
Cat's eye chrysoberyl
Mahenge spinel

I thought that was a great haul, I've never seen those offered before when I've searched for beaded necklaces (I only search for the finished product though, not supplies). I just think it's really neat to see some of the rarer gems in bead form. I can post a link to her store if anyone is interested, but I've already mentioned her about 20 times over here. She is making me a necklace right now with all of those except the mahenge - I kind of wanted those too, but it didn't fit the blue/green/yellow color scheme.

Cool! I's like to see her site.

Thanks!

Thank you, I will do some hunting!

Most bead stores will be able to refer you to someone who knots nylon or silk to make bead necklaces. Anyone who knots pearl necklaces can knot your beads.

If you live in the DC area, there's a bead store here that has a afternoon class in knotting for $60.
