Does anyone have a nook e-reader? (barnes and noble)

If so, how do you like it? How's the battery life for you? Do you find it to have a slow refresh rate (i.e. on page turns), or have you gotten used to it?

I played with a Kindle and really liked it. I've also messed around with a nook. At first, I didn't like the nook as well as the Kindle because I found it less intuitive to use and the page turns were noticeably slower.

Then I read several reviews and read up on the specs. Most of the advantages/disadvantages aren't a big deal to me, but I see that the nook uses the more universal e-pub format, which I think might be important in the future. Some libraries already "loan" e-books in the e-pub format, but not in Amazon's format. That would be a huge advantage to nook if I could get books free from the library! Nook also has wi-fi in addition to 3G connection, which may or may not be a big deal. Battery life is a little shorter on the nook though. The biggest problem was that it really did seem slower to me - although that could be fixed in the future with software updates.

Anyway, wondering what people thought of the nook if you have it!

Using the kindle seemed very intuitive to me. The wireless is awesome...and like crack! So much to download for grins and giggles! I''m already an Amazon wh*re, so this is another excuse to be on Amazon. It''s such instant gratification, it''s really quite scary.

However, since I am under the 30 day eval window, I felt it was only prudent to go check out the nook, so I went to B&N today and played with it for some time.

My conclusion, no way, no Nook, no how. It''s awful as it stands right now. I think it could be a worthy competitor but the thing is horrendously sluggish. I would be pissed off to spend that money right now only to get a machine that worked like THAT. The page flashes are 2-3 times as slow as the kindle (which prevented me from really getting lost in it). I didn''t find it as intuitive as the Kindle to use, although it didn''t take me too much longer to figure out. The menus are slow and after a few clicks you kind of forget where you are and what you''re doing, if that makes sense. It''s also noticeably heavier than the Kindle, which I didn''t like. Some people might like the substance and heft, but being a one hand reader, I like it to be as light as possible.

The sales person as the kiosk seemed to already be automated to address frustrations and said software updates are coming soon and kinks are being worked out. The question is when will the Nook work like it''s supposed to? Hm. I don''t think I''d want to be the guinea pig.

I also like the buying experience on the Kindle better, both on the device and on Amazon.com (maybe because I''m so familiar with Amazon). The Nook has all the free books through google, which makes it confusing if you type in something like "Pride and Prejudice" because a ton of google listings come up. I did check out the free google "scanned" version of Pride and Prejudice and it was easy enough to read though.

Finally, I like the physical keyboard on the Kindle, but I know this is a personal preference. I''m a blackberry bold person, and not an iPhone or blackberry storm person because I HATE those virtual keyboards. On the nook it took me several tries to type in "Pride and Prejudice" because it kept typing as "prejudive". Not sure if it was the nook''s problem or mine, but I''ll give it the benefit of the doubt and call it a user error.

With no basic internet (I love the free wikipedia access on Kindle), Kindle 2 is the clear winner for me. Nook isn''t even a temptation. I think as it gets better, it will be a matter of preference and what you look for in an e-reader.

So my bottom line is that if you have to get one NOW, Kindle 2 is the one to get. If not, wait to see how Nook improves and what Kindle 3 will hold.

I'm torn and DH is getting irked. LOL. He wants to get me one for V-Day and I really like the selection of Nook but some of the features (no touchpad) of Kindle plus the speed. Plus Kindle books seem to cost less. I can't pick.

I will likely go for the Kindle. But... maybe not. There is an eval period, so I might just get one, maximize the eval period and see what I think and then decide. GOOD luck. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

I ended up going with the nook after seeing a lot of the initial problems were solved by the early Feb software update. I think each device has strengths and weaknesses but I think now, the nook is a worthy competitor to the kindle. At first, no way - it was way too slow to respond. It runs much better now and while there is still room for improvement, I think they are being proactive with their software fixes. I mainly chose nook because it supports the more universal epub format, which some libraries already have and more will offer in the future. I also like that I can replace the battery myself and can carry extra batteries if necessary. Also, as a person who hangs out in Barnes and Noble a lot, I liked the exclusive in-store offers and features. I also like the ability to browse books by cover, and the "flicking" page turns on the touch screen, especially when I'm reading in bed. Those are the main reasons I chose nook, but I think kindle is also a great product and I would have been very happy with it as well. There are a few disadvantages to nook, but nothing I can't live with.

I'm happy to post a more detailed review if anyone would like it. let me know.

I''d be interested to see what you think! If the bug fixes are there, it would be a fine competitor to the Kindle. It becomes a preference between touch screen and cursor, I think. I do think the nook looks more slick!

I think the epub format is a big thing for many, and if you hang out at B&N a lot, that would be a huge point for the Nook. I never got to B&N...the one near me has horrid parking.

Let me try this again. I'm not attempting to do a side by side comparison of every feature because there are a lot of those out there. The checklist on nook website was actually pretty helpful. They admit there are some things that kindle does that nook doesn't do (and vice versa)! Anyway, I'll just address the things that were important to me when deciding between nook and kindle.

Speed
I was very concerned about the speed, especially of page turns. The software upgrade to 1.2.0 has helped a lot. There is still a little room for improvement, though, on the page turns. I believe it is more of a software thing than a hardware thing at this point. I would love to see a recent comparison between the two. From a hardware perspective I would think it should be similar as both kindle and nook use e-ink. The difference seems to be in the delay between pushing the button and the screen actually updating. Kindle may still have less of a delay. I was really afraid this would bug me on my nook, but I'm pleased that I've gotten totally used to it. I hit the button when I'm on the last line of the page in order to have the new page up right when I'm ready, for seamless reading.

Navigation
It took me about a night to get used to the navigation of the device. It did not seem the most intuitive at first, but has become second nature. In terms of purchasing books, it's very easy and fast if you know what you want (either title or author). Browsing a large category is not bad but a little cumbersome. I prefer to browse on the main bn website and then just purchase it via the nook. The books appear in the library right away, no delays (as was a criticism of the nook at first).

Battery
I find that I charge it about every 4 days. That is with reading about 1-2 hours a day, almost no internet. I thought I'd be able to go longer between charges based on the advertised times, but it charges fast and you can use it while charging, so not a big deal. Also, you can supposedly change the battery easily yourself if necessary. I haven't looked into this yet, but I think it will be a good feature so I can carry a spare on long flights or other times when charging is not possible. Also, as the device gets older, it will be nice to be able to replace the battery myself and not have to send it off and pay big bucks for someone to work on it. It seems like none of these batteries on devices last forever, so it seemed like a useful feature.

Touch screen
Wasn't a deal maker or breaker for me; I'm sure the kindle's keypad would have been fine too. I DO like being able to browse through books by their cover. Of course you can't judge a book by its cover, but it does help you get an idea of the genre, etc. I also like being able to flick the touch screen to turn the page (although it doesn't always work the first time).

This is probably what put me over to the nook side from kindle. I love barnes and noble, as i mentioned earlier. I can't go there and chill as often as I used to, since I have a baby now and my free time is often at home after he goes to bed. Anyway, if I can't get to the store, I can sort of bring the store to me via the nook. There are also some special features that I can access when I go to the store, like coupons and things to download for free. Eventually the nook should be able to have full access to all ebooks while at the store, although this is not available yet.

ETA Tgal or other kindle users question for you! How often do you have to charge the kindle? Also, do you see any glare at all? I see a very faint reflection in the nook's screen. Not enough that it bugs me, but I was not expecting it at all. i.e. I can see a faint reflection of myself in it sometimes.

I rarely bought books before, because I'm such a fast reader and had limited shelf space. I got so many from the library. Now I'm finding I'm a cheapskate when it comes to buying books on the nook too. I've read the free sample of about a dozen books this week before buying one! I keep browsing the cheap (under $5) e-books but a lot of them are just not for me.

Have any book recommendations? I just finished The Help by Katherine Stockard (sp)? and loved it. I also read Not My Daughter by Barbara Delinksy which had a very interesting topic (teen pregnancy pact) but really dragged, so I don't recommend it.

After a day with the kid, I don''t want any mind benders! I read Cocktails for Three which is written under her real name Madeline Wickham and hated it.

I just downloaded some random book samples...I have no idea if they are going to be any good or not, but I went to the "humor" section on Kindle Books

Cool! Thanks for the recommendations! Did you really enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse? It keeps popping up on my searches on bn but you are the first person I've heard mention it. I have borrowed Twilight from someone and have kind of put off reading it - I;m just not that into vampires. Maybe I will get hooked though, seems like most people are

I've read some of the ones you mentioned. I loved the Nanny Diaries. The first book was much better than the sequel that just came out. Actually, that was the first of several books by the same authors and their first was BY FAR their best IMO.

Don't bother with the Not My Daughter that I mentioned above - it was not that good. The Help was great, though. Couldn't put it down!

I don't mind fluff but usually get my fluff in the form of mysteries/thrillers! I loved all of Philip Margolin's and Patricial Cornwallis (well, her Scarpetta series anyway, the Isle of Dogs series was terrible) and am looking for a new mystery author.

I liked some of the Kinsella books - they are a bit too fluffy for my usual taste, but sometimes that's just what I am looking for. Didn't know about her other name, I'll check that out! Actually, sounds like I'm best off avoiding it!

I thought Lovely Bones was GREAT. Did you see that she has a memoir too, called Lucky? I thought it was great as well. Her more recent novel (Almost Moon) was pretty good, not as good as the other two IMO.

Oh, I also really really enjoyed all of Jennifer Weiner's books EXCEPT her most recent one, Best Friends Forever, which was kind of lame. I think you would like Little Earthquakes best. Topic near and dear to our hearts (new motherhood). She writes "chick lit" but it's very good.

I also like some of Jodi Picoult's books. Some are kind of overemotional, but most are good. I loved The Pact and Nineteen Minutes best. I think Plain Truth was also really good. Actually none of hers are bad, some are just better than others.

Hmm... I can't think of anything else off top of my head, but let me know what you think of the ones you are trying, especially the living biblically - seems like that could go either way!!

I just finished charging the nook so I'll keep better tabs on the battery life as well as I use it this week. Should be an interesting comparison.

ETA Thought of a few more books to recommend: Black and White by Dani Shapiro, Family History also by Dani Shapiro, and both of Joshilyn Jackson's books (Girl who stopped swimming, gods in alabama)

ETA again: Also loved two books by Jennifer Haigh: The Condition and Mrs. Kimble. I did not yet read her third book.

Interesting! I would not have expected it either. It''s not distracting, but definitely something I notice sometimes esp in low light situations.

When I recharge, I''ll log the hours I read each night to see how many hours it can actually handle. That way we can know for sure.

I''ve read Jennifer Weiner before...can''t remember which book but it was ages ago. I''ll see what she has since I''ve read her books. And you''re right...Kinsella is almost too fluffy and stupid, but it''s engaging and I can polish off a book in a few hours and move on.

Twilight was the first book I bought on my Kindle (the first I downloaded was Pride and Prejudice, but that was free). My friends who bought me the Kindle all loved the Twilight series. While I did get sucked into Twilight, the writing was so horrendous, I just couldn''t get past it. I didn''t bother with the next three.

Sookie Stackhouse Series is definitely more adult, and the HBO series True Blood is based on it. I found the first 4-5 books or so interesting, and then it was a struggle to get through 6-8. I think I enjoyed book 9 because it was the light at the end of the tunnel. I''m not into vampires or urban fantasy type books, but I really enjoyed the earlier books. There are quite a few PSers who have read the Sookie books (I found the recommendation here), and it comes up in a search. There''s a thread on it.

I haven''t been able to get myself to download any of Jodi Picoult...I have read they are overemotional and I don''t know if I have the energy to read them. At some point I will try one.

I''m off to bed early tonight. Staying up late reading has been killing me. I bought the Bible book I mentioned...it had me laughing out loud right from the start, so I think I will enjoy having a book that I can pick up and put down...allowing me to get some shut eye!

Thanks for the great review TDM! I just wanted to echo that my Kindle performs about what TGal said as far as battery life goes. I try to keep my internet off to keep battery life as long as possible and I read a LOT everyday on it.

I just wanted to say too, TGal, that Christopher Moore is absolutely fabulous. I''ve read and own every one of his books, including the one he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman (another great author in that genre). Island of the Sequined Love Nun is hilarious. My personal favorite from Moore is Lamb though (it''s the story of the first 30 years of Jesus'' life told from the perspective of his best friend Biff - a bit sacrilegious but anyone with a sense of humor will definitely like it). I also really like Fluke and Bloodsucking Fiends, and A Dirty Job. Good Omens, the book by him and Neil Gaiman, is also really good. And if you like Moore, Neil Gaiman is a great one to check out - I loved American Gods, Stardust and Neverwhere. He''s a bit darker than Moore is though.

Interesting! I would not have expected it either. It''s not distracting, but definitely something I notice sometimes esp in low light situations.

TDM I get a bit of glare only in certain locations, like directly under my dining room lamp. Otherwise totally fine.

Hey there, just wanted to report back re: the nook''s battery life. I am getting about 8 hours between charges. I''ve been reading about 2-3 hours a day, so every third day or so I charge it. That''s with having the wireless on just briefly when I purchase a book. I called bn''s customer service and asked if this was normal or not. They said it sounded a little shorter than should be expected, so they are sending me another battery - yay! Of course, their batteries are on backorder, so I must not be the only one with a concern. Even if my battery is just fine, I guess it will be nice to have a spare.

Since the last time I posted here, my battery finally went flat YESTERDAY. I came onto this thread on 2/22, so that''s a long stretch (and my battery wasn''t fully charged then.) However, I haven''t read a ton these last 2.5 weeks...maybe only 3 books at around 15+ hours. Hard to say. I never turned the Kindle completely off either...it was on sleep mode with the art displayed.

I full charged yesterday and am starting to log the hours, so I''ll report back when the battery is depleted this time.

Since the last time I posted here, my battery finally went flat YESTERDAY. I came onto this thread on 2/22, so that''s a long stretch (and my battery wasn''t fully charged then.) However, I haven''t read a ton these last 2.5 weeks...maybe only 3 books at around 15+ hours. Hard to say. I never turned the Kindle completely off either...it was on sleep mode with the art displayed.

I think it''s safe to say the kindle battery is A LOT better than the nook''s battery! (At least yours vs mine!) Maybe the color screen really drains the battery or something.... thanks for checking in!

TDM, thought I''d report back since I don''t know how much time I''ll have to read this week.

My battery reached the halfway point yesterday. So far I have read

3/10 - 1.5 hours
3/12 - 4.5 hours
3/14 - 5 hours
3/15 - 2 hours

I also left the wireless ON for one day and noticed that it depleted the battery a bit more. So that''s 13 hours of reading so far on 1/2 battery charge. I''m guessing it could do about 25 hours on a charge if I remembered to keep the wireless off. If I read more this week, I''ll come back when the battery is depleted.

I haven''t kept track of it much since the halfway point, but it still has a little under a quarter battery power left, and I''ve probably done another 5 hours of reading since then. Plus I went "flipping" through a series of books, which I am sure takes power.

I read Twilight because two of my friends loved it. I thought it was OK in the sense it was an easy read, but I hated the writing and couldn''t get myself to read the rest of the series. I get that teens love the book because maybe they want to be Bella (or whatever her name is) or something but as an adult, it was hard for me to really buy how much these two were in love. Not much of a plot in my book, but maybe I expected too much out of what is really a teen series.

I was on the phone with BN support for HOURS today. I re-registered, re-initialized it, and re-installed my wi-fi access.

I went with Nook because I had 36 ebooks from them already and I''d played with the Nook for a while in stores and wanted to give it a try.

I bought the extended warranty. And I''m still within my return period. If it keeps giving me fits, it is going back. But when it is behaving... it loads pages much faster than the ones I tried a month ago, it''s been updated. And my battery seems okay, but I''ve already been warned that it is an issue.

But I like the way it feels and love reading on it.

Kidding (sort of). Hopefully it behaves for you. My Kindle has only had one weird glitch, but out of the box it was flawless.
