A friend of mine used to get me a Wallace candy cane ornament every year beginning in 1981 for about 10 years. Then a few years went by and I started to buy them on my own. When I went to replacements. com to see if I could purchase any of the ones I missed over the years, I found that the 1981 ornament sells for over a $1000.00!

My collection is valued over $4000.00. I wonder if I should even put them on the tree anymore?

Yes. I have many boxes of very beautiful ornaments I have collected and, given my life situation (home in one state and spending Christmas in abother state), I no longer even put up a Christmas tree! Besides many varied and exquisite ornaments, I have Reed & Barton sterling silver bells going back to about when I was married in (in 1977).

I collect the sterling ones for my kids each year-different patterns for each child-which I plan to give them when they leave home one day. I have three boys and a girl so I am hoping that one day my daughters-in-law will be thrilled to have so many ornaments!

Replacements is always the most expensive place to replace something though. My sister is an antique silver dealer and she sells to them. They then turn around and put what she sold them on their website for 40-50% more.

I collect the Campbell''s Kids Christmas Ornaments. My mom buys them for my sister and myself every year (it''s our last name) and has since the early 90s. Those ornaments alone pretty much decorate my whole 4.5'' tree!

I don''t know if they''re worth anything, but they''re not in pristine condition anymore, either...and I coudln''t imagine my tree without them, so they''ll continue to go up every year!

Sort of... DH and I try to get a new ornament together every year. We try to pick something that has some sort of meaning for us, or at least something that is pretty.

Yes. My parents started this tradition when we were born... Everyone gets a special ornament that represents something significant from the past year when we decorate the tree (which is also a big tradition and everyone has to be there).

Soocool, wow, that's insane! You could mount them somehow and display them that way, so they stay in better condition than on the tree.

I don't collect them per se, but I do like to buy ornaments as souveniers. It gives me something tangible to bring home, but I don't have to leave it out to collect dust all year. Plus it's fun to get them out at Christmas and remember where we've been.

I love buying Christmas Ornaments, I dont collect any, but I do like unusal ones, I know this year I bought the Hallmark Ghosterbuster ornament, it is a replic of Ecto 1, my oldest son loved Ghosterbusters, so I just had to have it !!!

If those were my ornaments, I would sell them!

Oh, and yes, I do collect ornaments. Usually get a new one for both of my kids every Christmas. None of them are very expensive. Usually under $10 each. More the sentimental value than the price. Also, I have a few ornaments that were my dad''s (he died a number of years ago) and I *do not* hang those up. We''ve had a tree fall over last year, but none of the ornaments broke, however, I put the lights too close to some of the cheaper glass ones and the lights kind of burnt the finish.

My husband and I collect the annual Swarovski snowflakes. We have one for each year that we have been together. Aww

They are pricey though; I think I will be nervous when we have kids who are tearing ornaments off our tree.

All you do is put the more fragile ones up top and put lots of soft/non-breakable ones at the bottom. World Market always has cool ornaments. One year I found little airplanes with propellers & wheels that move. Stuff like that easily distracts kids. (for a few years, we only decorated the top 2/3 of the tree.)

A fun thing to do is get mini christmas stockings and stick candy canes in there for christmas morning.

My kids LOVE that.

Giving this some thought. Possibly creating a mobile using the ornaments?

I have also purchased ornaments as souveneirs and we always reminisce when we hang them on the tree.

DH says no way! It was just so interesting to see what these cost now if we were to purchase the older ones. I am still missing a few. Might try ebay.

I have a few of the Hallmark as well. I bought my DD an ornament for the 1st 5 years, like 1st xmas, 2nd xmas, etc. I even hang the ones she made in preschool and elementary school--- so much sentimental value.

That is so sweet! I remember the Campbell soup kids. I didn''t know they had ornaments.

I have a few on the tree that DD and I painted together when she was little. Not the prettiest, but they''re one of a kinds and I can''t imagine not putting them on the tree.

I think eventually I''ll give mine to DD. She has already toldme she wants them someday. As if I would ever leave them to someone else. She''s lucky she''s an only child.

I love the Swarovski snowflakes, but have never purchased any.

Up to about DD''s 3rd birthday we decorated the tree from the middle up worying that she would knock off the ornaments on the lower half . I laugh at the photos we have of the half naked tree back then.

I told my sister that there were others who did this as well. They laughed at me when I did this when DD was little.

My parents have been giving me ornaments since birth. I have tons of the old Hallmark ones and more recently they started buying me Radko garlands and ornaments. I never collect anything with the intent that it will be "worth something someday," instead these are things that mean something to me, most have memories attached and have far more sentimental value than monetary.

When our big Lab was young (his tail was a weapon of mass destruction), we kept the lower part of the tree decorated with unbreakable ornaments.

We are starting this year

I kind of wish I had kept up with making ornaments. I made one for my mom when I was in middle school (jr. high) and she has put it on the tree every single year.

I decided to do this for DD. I''m not sure what I want to do though: whether to buy a custom made one with her stats and the year (kind of like Sophia 6 months Christmas 2009) or make one myself for her and when she gets older we can do it together. I''ve also thought about maybe doing the swarovski ornaments so that she has a pretty collection each year. A friend of mine has a bunch and they really are beautiful.

we do the same thing! each year, we buy one another a "surprise" ornament that we get to open before christmas. we don''t have many ornaments, so this is our way of building the collection. i can''t wait until we''re older and have all the memories of how we got our ornaments.

my grandmother used to make these GORGEOUS handmade ornaments with very intricate beading. she hung them from the ceiling, since they were rather large for a tree. my older sister loved them so much, that my grandma started making one for her each year. its really a cute tradition/memory that i have- and how cool would it be to have these awesome ornaments hanging all over the ceiling?
