For you who have upgraded, did your upgrade shrink too - as in, you then wanted another larger upgrade?

What got me thinking about this was Liz Taylor.
I wonder if she longed for larger stones she just could not afford.

For me the answer is Yes, my upgrade from 0.83 to 2.26 stopped DSS.
I don't think I'd ever go larger.

What about you?
What was the weights of your before and after stones, and is your DSS gone?

No for me.
1.33 to 2.93 and it has definitely undergone huge shrinkage as in yes, I am longing for another upgrade ;))

diamonds usually shrink about 0.5mm per year... ;))

Yes.

With all my other stones.. I knew it within a few months. With this one - nothing but adoration.

Some days it looks small, some days it looks positively huge, but not once have I actually, seriously considered changing it.

I think, though, that a larger part of it - for me - was getting the stone and setting exactly right - the perfect ring, as a full package. None of my other settings were quite right - and the "problems" always bothered me, I wonder just how much of a contribution that was to overall dissatisfaction, if you will...

Well that explains it then! It has been 7 years so the diamond size in in minus territory LOL

edit: I thought you wrote .5 carats a year :))

we're talkin Diamond here, right?

there doesnt seem to be a delicate way around this. While I think shape is as important as size, I just cant get enough. That said I am more into colored stones these days. DSS isn't even an issue.

That's a good point. I have some pretty impressive sized colored stones and I don't suffer from DSS with those.

Yes.
DSS is Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome.

whew!

I'm certainly not talking about FCDs.
They give you the other DSS, Diamond Swellage Syndrome since tiny ones are so dear.

I have a 2.50 diamond and sometimes I look at it and think...hmmmmm could be bigger :naughty:

Then, after 5 seconds I snap back to reality and think....am I kidding myself? this thing IS big enough for me!

I love to look at other people ginormous diamonds but I am happy with the size of my stone. I think, for me, any bigger just
wouldn't work for my life, and I would feel uncomfortable wearing it.

So, for me, pretty much cured. That is not to say, I wouldn't love another stone. I have thought about changing the setting already
and I haven't even had mine a whole year yet.

I think it made it worse for me. Now that I upgraded I am looking forward to another one someday.

I think PS contributes to DSS more than anything!

OMG, I just saw a clip on TV of Liz Taylor's 69 carat pear that Richard Burton gave her. YOWZERS! It was bigger than a ring pop!!!

I went from a 1.5 cushion to a 2.94 OEC. By and large, I'd say it has put a serious brake on DDS. But there are some days it looks average-sized to me, even though DH reminds me that it's huge, and I wonder whether I could go bigger :naughty:

I am immune to DSS. I don't want any of my diamonds to be bigger.

I do have MDS (more diamonds syndrome)

ditto - I would love one of every shape... a nice 5 carat emerald cut, a 2 carat OEC... and more lol But the stone I have I've never seriously thought needed to be bigger.

i thought Liz Taylor wore the Krupp diamond everyday since the day she got it ... 1967 to 2011 ... even in her movies? If so ... sounds like DSS did not get to her. Of course, having 33+ carats is a good head start against it.

I went from a .18 to a 1.01, will I upgrade? no unless of course I come into some money then it is not out of the question at all....

Probably not so much. When my fiance and I first started looking at diamonds (we only considered princesses, since that is my favorite shape), I thought that 1 carat looked huge. We did tons of research and looked at several different diamonds over the course of a few months, and then we decided that 1.5 carats would be more ideal for us. He actually then started a new job right around when he proposed, and we heard that diamond prices are going to continue to increase pretty dramatically, so we went ahead and upgraded it already. I just received my new 2.2 carat princess cut diamond less than two weeks ago, and it seemed absolutely huge at first (probably because I have rarely seen anything that large on someone's finger in real life).

Now, I have somewhat grown accustomed to it. It still looks pretty big to me (especially on my size 4.5 finger), but I'm used to seeing it every day now. My fiance and I went to the jewelry store to have the ring adjusted last week, and when we were there, we asked to see our old ring (we had asked them to keep it throughout the return period, just in case we decided that we wanted it back). It just looked so small to me, I couldn't believe that it was my old ring! :)

That being said, I don't plan to upgrade again anytime in the near future. I know that I really need to snap out of it, because what I have now is larger than 99% of what I see. :)

dss is a problem. a real one. i need a support group :Up_to_something: I brought my ring in to reset it today! yaaaaaaaaay.

For me it did. I went from a 1.37 to a 2.36 and don't want a bigger diamond. I have small hands and can't carry off a larger stone if I wanted to. I have short fingers. And now that I took off the acrylics, no more long nails, my stone looks even bigger.... :naughty:

Yes and no.

I went from .80 to 1.20 to 1.67cts over three years. My goal size had always been the size I have now.

My diamond is the perfect size now and I don't want to upgrade. That is the "yes".

The "no" is that it looks much smaller than it used to. So your eyes do get used to the size not matter what size it is. Whether you want a bigger one, though, in response to that optical adjustment is all in your head.

That said, my mom just yesterday poked my ring and said "It is so big it look fake!" So that is a nice reality check ;))

I am like Yssie though, I think I will not be 100% happy until I get the setting just right to. Now that I have the dream diamond, and some nice sidestones thanks to Andrey and PS, I might accomplish that goal in the next year or so!

I upgraded at first from .5 to .91 and thought I had a rock. Thatlasted about 5 years, them I got my 2.5. Now I'm happy.

I agree with Yes and No. I started out with a half carat. Then 1.5 which is huge in my area. Then just over 2 which is beyond huge in my area. It made me so uncomfortable to have so much attention on me for it. I then found a beautiful piece by a designer that I love at an amazing price. Now my center is 3/4 carat, which is still large in my area. It makes me feel blingly without being some weird black sheep

threadjack...shihtzulover do you have pics???

For me I'm looking forward to the change in style. My original setting is very blingy and modern my new setting will be more delicate and classic. My style has changed a bit since we were engaged, and that probably accounts for my willingness to upgrade.

My original (and current) stone is a 2.01 ct modern cushion. The new one is a 2.30 ct antique cushion. The size difference isn't that big. I can't say I ever looked at my 2 ct stone and thought it looked too small. I'm upgrading for the change in style--I guess you can call it SDTS, Same D*mn Thing Syndrome. :cheeky:

I just uploaded one to the 'The Forum Engagement Ring Folder/Eye Candy' thread under Show Me The Bling. I took several pics, but that's my favorite so far, and the only one that I have saved on this computer. :)

Depends.
Some never upgrade because what they have makes them happy. (this is actually most people in real life). Some upgrade at a significant anniversary years done the road, and they are thrilled and happy and stop. Some upgrade more than that, but come to a point when it's enough, because they really had a certain size in mind and they got to it. But there are those who will never be happy because it's not really about the diamond, they are seeking some kind of inner peace and satisfaction that a mere stone is not going to give them, not even a diamond though it so strongly symbolizes (in our culture) perfect love. So if you have the perfect diamond, you have perfect love, right? Except nothing is ever really perfect enough--or big enough--and there's always someone somewhere who has a bigger one--and maybe they are loved more? Or have something else that you don't?
It can be the same kind of thing like anorexia. Never thin enough--until you actually die from it. Maybe diamonds are better, because they don't kill you (though you can get awfully broke).
I'm not saying anyone on Pricescope is like this, because I don't know anyone on Pricescope personally, but I do know people like this in real life. They keep spinning around in circles until something makes them realize there is a problem and face it and then they can get better (though some of them don't).
DSS is fun to laugh about, when you aren't having this problem.
As for Liz Taylor--I don't think she had DSS. She was satisfied with the 33 carat Krupp. Later she was given the 69 carat Taylor-Burton and it was just too big--she never wore it and eventually sold it for charity, which is a good use of a nice stone. However, she might have been better off if she had kept seeking the ultimate diamond, in my opinion, rather than the ultimate husband. The woman had many good qualities but--nine husbands? That's sort of a lot.

goodness knows I love Liz Taylor's Krupp diamond assher cut... that is one beautiful stone on a beautiful lady... I love her quote, big diamonds for big girls...

but back to the real world ..... I adore my upgrade from a 1.7 round to a 3 carat radiant- sometimes I think I should have got another round but I have to admit I am loving the mass of the 3 carat, and the square shape of the stone- very happy after over a year. no DSS to report....
