Do your projects ever just lose momentum and die out?

So as you all know I've been obsessively looking high and low for a yellow stone this past month or so, and I'm at the point where I *think* the yellow oval local to me is the answer (although I haven't spent enough time with it to be 100% sure) but for some reason I haven't bothered to pick up the phone and call on it. This is the time to do it; the gem show is over (not that I really expected to see anything there--but you never know) and I've seen everything else in Chicago, not to mention all the PS vendors have been wonderful about suggesting options, but I just feel like it's turned into a "chore". Not to mention I'm not sure how much I would really wear it, given that I've got The Brick, my eternity band (and now a STACK of eternity bands), my sapphire, and a myriad of other rings. Today I'm wearing three plain yellow gold bands stacked on top of each other, two of which didn't cost $100 total and the other one I literally found in the street about 15 years ago, but I love the look of them all together.

Am I crazy? Am I stupid? Did I fall and hit my head and I just don't have a bump to remind me? Does this ever happen to anyone else? Do you just plow ahead and end up happy with the final result and glad that you did finish it? If the "perfect" yellow stone had materialized at some point when I first started looking I'd probably be wearing it right now (or at least in the process of having the setting made), but now I'm like, eh...

Dee, I would go and see the oval again to see if that canary sings, if not then perhaps take a break from the project and go back to it when the thought of it excites you again! These things can be arduous trying to find the right rock, I think it is normal to run out of steam when looking for something rare and specific.

When you feel undecided and it has become a chore, it''s probably not the right stone. Perhaps take a short break but at the same time keep your feelers out. Sometimes the right stone will just pop out of the woodwork. When it''s the right stone, you''ll know it right away.

I agree with Lorelei that you should see it again. Maybe we could go see it when we''re shopping Dee, and I could throw in my 5.00 bucks. (we''re talking Chicago here, hence the more pennies)

Then, as Chrono said, if it doesn''t do anything for you, and it still seems like work, maybe shelf the idea for a while and see how things go...

Awww D*J, I totally agree with Lorelei. It sounds like your mind is saying you need to take a break from this project. If you are tired of thinking about it, it may be best not to make any decisions. Maybe you can just let your ideas and what you have seen converge/organize in your mind for a while and then resume when you are excited about it again. Do have a deadline to meet? I ask because it is different with erings and wedding bands because they can be governed by specific deadlines we and our SOs set for ourselves. It would seem like a blessing not to have to adhere to that kind of timeframe, but I can also see how it can be overwehlming to weed out the "

s" and find your perfect stone. I think I do understand how you feel and you are certainly not crazy or stupid! Perhaps you have explored so many options to the point of exhaustion...sometimes just finding what you want is incredibly hard work! I hope you can rest up and have fun in your search for new yellow sparkles

Sometimes it takes a long time to find the right stone, especially with colors. It took me 3 years to find an emerald I wanted. Don''t stop looking - one day the right one will jump at you.

I got that feeling while searching for my diamond anniversay ring; once all the fun and initial excitement wore off, it soon became like a FT job. I got burned out and dropped the search completely. After several "dry" months, I popped into my jeweller on a lark, and there "it" was; wating for me instead of me anxiously/impatiently searching the "ends of the earth" for it. Timing was everything--or at least it was for me.
Your stone (and mount) will not be a small expense, and if this oval stone is not calling to you, then maybe it isn''t the "one". Nor is the time right. Is it likley that nearer to (the big buying season of) Christmas--there might be greater selection from which to choose?

Dee*Jay, I run out of steam on projects all the time. That doesn''t mean that I never revisit them. Sometimes I just need a break. I am sure that that is frustrating to a jeweler with whom I have been working, but the jewelers who have worked with me for many years know that I keep coming back.

I have never finished having a tennis bracelet made. I have never had a ruby ring made. I would like some more 24K bangles to go with the ones I already have. (The ones I have are narrow compared to what I want to add; I want my bangles to go gracefully from narrow into a broader width.) I want a diamond eternity band.

Of course one could say that I will always want something more, but I have wanted the ruby ring and the diamond tennis bracelet for many years and I could have saved my money for them if I had had the energy to put into looking for the stones and pursuing their design. I just didn''t. So I have been where you are. It seems normal to me as a fellow jewelry aficionado. I think we do tend to run out of steam after a while!

hi! i thought i had missed your new yellow stone. i would just take it as a sign that it was not meant to be if this happened to me.

however, i would think that if i was meant to have a yellow that someday it would just be there in front of my eyes when i least expected it. also, i would know that if i once again got the itch i could start a new quest.

Usually when I am having doubts or a project looses momentum, it''s usually because the stone (or whatever I''m thinking about) isn''t "the one." If you are having doubts about the oval haven''t purchased it yet, it''s not the right oval. In general, whenever I have doubts about a purchase and I purchase it anyways, I usually regret it. I''ve gotten so picky now, that I will only buy something if it''s perfect and I love it.

. seriously though, I do think 1) it''s a lot of money to spend on something whether you''re 100% sure or not so that in itself leads to second guessing and doubt (at least for me). 2) I think the fact it''s taken longer than you expected and you haven''t found what you want it has turned into more of a chore rather than fun and since it''s something you don''t need it''s even more easy to question. Nothing wrong with checking out the oval, just don''t settle and try to convince yourself that it''s the one if it''s really not!
