I went through a long period of time where I never put on a pair of shorts, no matter how hot it was outside. But last year I found some great fitting shorts that had a 3.5 inch inseam and I''m so excited to wear shorts again! I went out and bought 2 more pairs.
Then today I went out shopping at our local mall and noticed that no females were wearing shorts. I saw a few people with capris, and a few women in knee length shorts, but no one had "shorter shorts." It was a nice day out, and I understand that its not summer yet and my legs are a bit pastey, but I started wondering if at 26 I shouldn''t be wearing shorts a few inches above my knee?

Ill add in that there were a lot of men and children in shorts.

I stopped wearing them a few years ago. I just feel weird wearing shorts, it's not my body or my legs. It's in my head that I am in my late 40's and shouldn't be wearing shorts. My husband and kids think I am nuts, but they don't live in my head....

I do love wearing capris and cute tops. I just feel so exposed in shorts...

Unless we are talking daisy dukes, then hell yeah. At 26 you should practically be dancing around in the nudie; if it doesn''t wrinkle, dimple, jiggle, fold or flap around* then get it on show charbie.

*And even if it does, show it anyway

+1!!!!!!!

I think any age can wear shorts (though short shorts that show your butt are never appropriate). If it''s hot out and they make you more comfortable then go for it.

No shorts. Even when I was young and thin, I almost never wore shorts. Not my thing then, and surely not now. I don''t ever want to be poster-girl for the adage, "Just because they make it in your size, doesn''t mean you should be wearing it."

I like capris though.

I''ve struggled with shorts for years. People used to tell me I was nuts because in mid summer in S. Florida I was in jeans at all times. I am no skinny little girl and haven''t been in many years and even when I was almost kinda skinny I never felt comfy in shorts. I''m about to turn 30 very shortly however and my mindset has suddenly changed. I don''t really care that my legs are short, stumpy and white as computer paper anymore. It''s hot as hell here already and the thought of wearing jeans is just...hot. So while I wouldn''t be caught dead in mini shorts I do now wear between a 3.5 and 5 inch inseam shorts. It took me a while to really honestly not care and I''m sure if I heard some punk kid say something mean I might secretly get my feelings hurt because there is some part of me that cares a little what others think. But for the most part I just don''t care enough.

not a fan of shorts w/3.5 inch inseams on anyone unless its a child. mid-thigh is a bit longer and allows appropriate coverage for sitting, bending, squatting, etc.

however, big fan of 6-9 inch inseams on anyone of any age spring, summer and fall.

charbie, I''d love to know where you found these great fitting shorts! I haven''t worn anything shorter than bermuda shorts in a few years. I''m 28, so I figure I''ve got a couple years of wearing shorts if I want to. Plus, I just lost 10 pounds so I don''t feel so gross in them! So, I must know where you''re getting your duds!

Oh yes, all the time.
I''m usually way too casually dressed.

I know it is so hard to get to that point. But good for you! That''s kind of what made me realize I should suck it up and put on some shorts...it was just too hot! And now, I''m secretly liking my legs...they are pretty strong and sexy!

Old Navy, actually! I bought a bigger size than normal bc they were low rise, but they fit better in the thigh then bc I didn''t feel like they squeezed my thighs and made them seem bigger. My quads now have definition!

Oh yes, all the time.

I''m usually way too casually dressed.
So is DH. He insisted on Easter to wear plaid shorts, which, while nice, but I felt he was under-dressed. Oh well!

I think a pair of cargo shorts and a clean white T-shirt are adorable on ALL ages / shapes/sizes of women...I haven''t worn mid-thigh or short shorts for years, but love a pair just above my knee...

Yes, I wear shorts. On the 2 days a year Scotland has weather to merit summer attire!

Ps I do on holiday! My legs are one of my best features and DH agrees!

NEVER. but not because i feel too old or too....whatever. I just don''t like them AT ALL. I love them on other people, but they just never seem to fit me properly
33.gif
I usually end up wearing a casual skirt (i.e. cargo style) rather than shorts in most situations.....

Charbie, what style did you get? i''d be willing to try!

I used to wear 3" shorts (keep in mind I am short so they never looked inappropriate). Now I wear 5+" I think women of all ages can wear shorts as long as they feel comfortable. My 60+ year old mom wears them. I have good luck with shorts from the Gap and Old Navy.

Not really anymore. In my 20''s I wore daisy dukes
32.gif
20.gif
but now I stick with lightweight capris for summer. Plus I hate wearing shorts in leather cars.

I prefer skirts to shorts, mainly because I hate it when I sit down and my thighs squoosh out and look huge. They don''t look that bad when I''m standing, I swear! Anyway, cute summer skirts allow my legs to get the breezes but cover up the unpleasant bits.

Mostly I wear knee length shorts or capris. But I do have a few pair of shorts that are shorter than knee length but also not short shorts, and I''ll wear them occasionally, but mostly just around the house/yard. Oh, and I wear gym shorts to exercise.

I love 3.5" inseam shorts! I've struggled with shorts for a long time - generally wearing them even though I felt incredibly uncomfortable and like everybody was staring at my cellulite.

Then I realized "Who the F*@! cares?!?!?!" If it's hot, I'll put on shorts. I'm not at my ideal weight, maybe I never will be again, but whatever. I think insecurity is way more noticeable than flab, and I was parading mine around for all to see.

I went YEARS without wearing shorts because I couldn''t find any that I was comfortable in until last year...I bought this adorable khaki pair from American Eagle, and in fact I wore them today! The sun was out and I went on a 3 mile walk around downtown in my shorts, flipflops, and a cute new t-shirt from Ann Taylor Loft. I can''t wait for summer to officially be here!

I have a couple pairs, but I don''t love them. I''m much more into summer sundresses and skirts and find them much cooler than shorts.

I have like two pairs of "short" shorts that I rarely wear. I like burmurda shorts and will wear them often. I am much more comfortable in a sun dress, skirt, etc.

Depends where I am. Different places seem to have different cultural ideas about this. I live in a somewhat hot part of the U.S (not the hottest) and its humid and lots of women here wear shorts so I do too. I adhere to the fingertip rule. My shorts should be longer than my fingertips. (I also don''t wear them with high heels or stockings or things that remind me of what the ladies of the night used to wear in my youth). I also don''t wear them to inappropriate places--like church or work. But otherwise, I usually just put them on when it gets hot and don''t think about it.

However, when I went to visit my mother in law in NY last summer, she was very shocked by my shorts and when I looked around on the streets in Brooklyn it was much more conservative than here. There were no other women in shorts and I stuck out, which is not what you want. You don''t want to stick out wearing LESS clothes than other women, anyway. So I went shopping and got longer shorts, down to my knees and also a pair of capris. which I normally don''t like to wear. I''m a petite, with relatively short legs. Capris really cut me off where I don''t need to be and make me look inches shorter and rather stumpy. they are often in plaid or print material and that doesn''t help. They are theoretically more appropriate for my age (53) but don''t suit my body type at all. I find I don''t wear the capris much now that I ''m back home.

It''s all about the culture. Some places you look indecent in things that are normal wear in other places and completely unnoticeable. It doesn''t have to do with the climate. My mom lives in Florida and though it is so hot, you don''t see women in shorts much in her area at all. Again, conservative.

what I struggle with is skorts. You know, the things that look like a skirt but they are shorts, really. I have quite a few of these--I keep buying them because they look flattering on my body type. However, every once in a while I have people think I am wearing a skirt that is really short and then I''m embarrassed. I have no problem with wearing shorts, which I think of as fun and casual and not indecent (so long as they hit the fingertips and aren''t overly tight) but I would be embarrassed to be a 53 year old in MINISKIRT.

Is that silly or what?

GO CHARBIE!!! I have problems finding shorts I like and that look good on me b/c I have freakishly long legs for my height (33 inch+ inseam, and I''m 5''8, and most of the length is in my thigh) plus I have some lbs that are sticking to my thighs
20.gif
so I hate that squishy when you sit down thing, but...I think I am going to try and find some for this summer.

Yep, I wear shorts during the summer unless I'm doing something like meeting up with friends/family or going out with dh on a date. If hanging out w/my kids at the park, grocery shopping, etc., I always wear shorts. Capris look terrible on me so basically shorts are my staple for keeping cool.

Nope, I hate shorts. I just look silly in them, so when its hot Ill opt for a skirt.

I wear shorts sometimes, but I prefer knee length a line skirts when it''s hot.
