Do You Use Spinning Mascara?

The kind where the little applicator spins around?

Does it work?

I've been debating if it's a gimmick that I will poke myself in the eye with, or if it will really help add some curl.

Never tried it, anybody else try it?

Never.

Ha maybe you should, Kenny!

No, I haven't tired it either. I understand the concept, I spin my brush to get more goo from the otherside.... but never actually tried it.

No, I'm afraid of getting something in my eye. Years ago my husband's secretary sneezed while she was putting on her mascara and forced the wand into her eye. She had to have surgery to remove the debris. She was awake for the procedure and described it to me in gorey detail. I've been meticulously careful since then whenever I apply eye make up. I'm sure she has been, too!

No. I'm terrified of getting stuff in my eye. My eyelashes also clump far too easily for me to rely on a spinning wand to get the job done right.

Ilander, I haven't tried a spinning wand, I don't like the idea of it personally as I wouldn't feel as in control with it. But I can recommend TurboLash by Estee Lauder, the wand vibrates and it really gives my lashes a good round curl, it builds up easily and doesn't clump or flake. If you have an EL counter nearby see if you can try it.

Kenny you are a hoot!

Turbolash and spinning mascara? Ooo - I want to try both now.

My eyelash need something that makes them stay up and curled. They are always falling straight down.

If you buy from Sephora and hate the mascara, they have a great return policy.

I was recently in buying a new tube of DiorShow in black, and I mentioned to the saleslady that last time I accidentally bought brown mascara. She told me to return the old, even after I told her I had been using it for seven months. I didn't take her up on the offer, as it seemed ridiculous, but still - excellent return policy.

I wouldn't try this type of mascara because of the spinning action. Exposure to air, especially moving air, ages your mascara. (This is why people who take the wand out of the tube and wave it in the air shorten the length of their mascara's staying power.) SO, the spinning seems to be bad for the actual mascara, as it would dry it out faster.

Yeah, also "pumping" mascara in the tube dries it out more quickly. My mom use to do that. (my source comes from the gals on makeupalley ;) lol

Mascara has become a precious resource as the prices have skyrocketed! Gotta make our $20-30 tube last as long as possible.

I always find Sephora reviews to be helpful. I've never used a spinning wand before but I'm curious. Here's the one I've been eyeing up. You can see the reviews at the bottom of the page.

Wow, $36? What a rip off. Makeupalley has GREAT reviews. I love reading them before buying products.

And, yeah, sillyberry is right about Sephora's return policy. They take anything back. They also have samples of numerous products so when it comes to face creams, etc., there really isn't any excuse to buy a full-size w/out trying a sample first.

Ah, yes! That's actually what I was thinking of--pumping. Does anyone actually wave the wand around? Ha, sorry about the strange reference!

Would wave my wand only if it could perform magic. lol Unfortunetly, I've yet to find a mascara which is a miracle maker. ;) hahaha

Which brand do you use, Haven? Right now I have Benefit Bad Gal mascara. Seems to work pretty good. It smears at night, but probably b/c it's not waterproof. I tried smashbox right around halloween and rubbed my eyes one night and my son came in the room and asked if that was part of my grim reaper halloween costume. lol

I use Rimmel, it's super cheap but I love it.

I've heard great things about Rimmel's makeup. Will have to try it next!

Rimmel is great. I really like their eyeliner, it goes on smoothly and last a long time.
Their eyeshadows are nice and smooth too.

Do you use an eye shadow primer? I've used Urban Decay's primer for years and recall a couple ladies saying it quit working after a few years and now I'm experiencing the same thing. Their eye liner goes on smoothly and did last all day till the primer quit working.

I'm not really a primer person. I use Mac's lip primer when I use their lipsticks because otherwise they don't last long, but otherwise I don't use primers.
Using brushes to apply eyeshadow really helps with smooth application, rather than those little puffy wand things.

Yeah, I also use brushes...MAC & Chanel. Maybe it's just my eye lids and I'm getting old. lol :( Ugh!

I always use eye shadow primer! I am a big fan of TooFaced Shadow Insurance. It works much better for me than UDPP. I've been using it for a couple years now, and it's still very effective.

I'm not really a mascara person, but when I do use it, I like to put on just one thin coat--otherwise, my eyelashes tend to look too clumpy and spidery. They're long, but not particularly thick, so they're predisposed to clumping. I don't think spinning mascara would work for me at all.

I have to use eyeshadow primer for my eyemakeup to look its best because my eyelids seem to soak up color and they're kind of brown on their own. If I want anything bright or colored, primer is a must.

I use DiorShow mascara and love it - no twirling for me although it does sound fun to put on makeup with a machine! ha!

Pumping definitely forces air into the tube and dries out the mascara, but I don't think a spinning wand has anything like a similar effect. So as much as this feels like challenging Teacher, I think Haven's initial concern is misplaced.

My sister turned to answer a question while putting on mascara, stabbed herself in the eye, and had to wear an eyepatch for a month! I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to putting things near my eye so I haven't tried the rotating wand.

Also, never drink while applying eye makeup, that's the message I got from my sister's incident.

Well, I put my mascara on in the morning....and cocktail hour does come EARLY in the St. Clare house, but never before 10AM :naughty: !

You're probably right, Barrister Sillyberry. When I had the (ridiculous) image of wand-waving in my head as the drying culprit, a spinning mascara wand seemed like a bad idea. Once I realized I was thinking of PUMPING the wand into the tube, the twirling wand things seems a bit more benign.

I don't know why I had this image of women waving mascara wands around, it really is a strange thing to think of. Pumping, yes, waving, not so much. AND, I had already had my coffee when I posted this. I blame the horrendous weather. It's freezing, maybe my brain is frozen, too.

All that being said, a twirling mascara wand sounds unwieldy. I don't know if I could handle that kind of technology in my mascara.

This was back in her college days (first week of her freshman year actually) and she was getting ready to go clubbing. Loud music+girls yelling+alcohol+plus stuff near your eye = being called "Captain Jack" until you graduate.

No. The mishap with the spinning lipstick put me off.
