Do You Think This Is a Morel Mushroom?

For those familiar with mushroom hunting, are there public places to search, or is that kind of activity restricted to those who already own a patch of land with woods?

I would assume the law varies by where you live, and even then by location. Here in CA, I was able to go mushroom hunting without a permit at a state park, but our guide advised that there was a weight limit per person. The regional park near me expressly prohibits mushroom hunting because they don't want the public to go off trail and damage the native flora.

Agree with @JPie re checking laws/rules where you are located.

Of note: I’m always learning something new about morels. This year my acquisition and subsequent contribution of knowledge to this thread is that when gathering morels, one should use a mesh bag of some sort (thing bags of oranges from the market, or lingerie bags, etc.) instead of plastic or thicker reusable bags. Why? So spores can escape and hopefully create morels next year.
