My husband was flipping through the channels just now and came across a TV show about secret government bunkers for when the world supposedly ends in 2012. Now if the world ends, I'm not sure how a bunker would help, but I guess that's neither here nor there!

I'm so intrigued by the whole 2012 world ending concept. Do you believe the world's going to end then? If so, why? And what do you think will happen if/when the world does end?! How's it going to go down?

It''s interesting to hear what people believe and why, but I think 2012 will be just like any other year.

When DH and I were in Belize this summer we took a day and went to visit the Mayan ruins at Caracol. Our guide acted as our chauffeur on the 2.5 hour car ride from our resort to the site, so he had our undivided attention that day. On the trip out I noted a sign advertising property for lease and on it it said "2012 is coming!" I asked Fedelio, our guide what it meant and he then proceeded to take the rest of the drive to educate us on Mayan astrology and the prophecy of 2012. It was fascinating and way too complicated to describe (I know I''d get it wrong!). Anyway, what I got out of it was that there''s no point in being afraid or trying to prepare. If it happens it happens, so just go on living your life in whatever way makes you happy and at peace. If the world ending in 2012 is destiny then it will happen regardless of secret bunkers and conspiracy theories.

I don't understand how it's supposed to happen- act of God or nature?

The bunker thing reminds me of grade school when the nuns had us crouch under the windows with a book on our heads just in case the Russians dropped the bomb. Yeah,Sister Jean Anthony, that should work.

The calendar ends, not the world. I thought the prediction was that it was going to be the end of one age and the beginning of another, not the END.

If the world is going to end there is nothing I can do but sit with my family and wait for the inevitable.

The bible states that no one will know the time of the end. So, the more guesses of the date and hour in the year 2012, the more I''ll mark off my list.

When the world ends, it ends. I believe the end will come in the ways described in the bible and I think we''ll know when we''re getting close. If not, there''s nothing anyone can do anyway.

I do not believe in these "forecasts". We have no way of knowing when it ends and whether it would be through some cosmic accident (a collision with a comet) or our own stupidity. It may be 2012, it may be tomorrow, it may be in 30 years when sources of oil will be exhausted. We are also overusing water so there will be shortage of it, and sooner than we think.

Abot bunkers, however, I suspect they do and did exist from the time the nuclear threat became a reality. I am almost positive they exist in every large country. It makes total sense because loss of government during a catastrophic event would totally paralyze and disorganize the country.

If you think about it the myan calander had to end somewhere....they couldnt have gone on forever and ever and ever. Maybe they didnt have a chance to finish the calander before the culture fell? LOL.

I dont think its anything to worry about. How many times in history have we cried ''end of the world''?

Zoe-I''m with you!

HH-that''s awesome that you got a synopsis from your guide! If you think you can remember the gist I would love to hear it!

lulu-ha! My mom tells me the same stories about the nuns making them hide under their desks. What a crazy thing to make kids do! And yeah-not sure how that would save anyone from nuclear warfare!

PA-I know that, but people are taking the calendar ending to mean that the world ends.

somethingshiny-how is the world supposed to end in the bible? I was raised Catholic and they''re not into the apocalyptic stuff so I don''t remember ever hearing about it.

crasru-I don''t, either. I think the world''s more likely to end because of something humans do, whether it''s nuclear warfare or just using all of the resources. I guess some people would say that the humans did that because God wanted them to, though.

Of course the world will end in 2012; just like it ends every year; then it restarts instantly and another period begins.

My memory is that the world was supposed to end in the late 1800''s (1870''s - 80''); it didn''t.

Then it was going to end in the early 1900''s; then mid 1900''s; remember Y2k... all the computers were going to end; and wasn''t there supposed to be some major world catastrophe about 5 years ago.

It''s all a bunch of nonsense; except that the "numbering" system periodically resets (just like the days of the week, the months, a year). 2012 is just when the Mayan calendar resets. Since the Mayans are no longer here.... who really cares.

Well, though I think as serious a magazine as Archaeolgy Magazine even addressing the issue is much more attention than it actually deserves, if anyone wants to read something more than the usual year 2000/Nostradamus/etc hysterical drivel on TV and the internet, try this article.

I am about as concerned about it now as I was in 1999. People for millennia have been freaking out about this stuff at periodic intervals since the dawn of time. I don''t think there''s anything to worry about right now.

You know that song by rem? it''s the end of the world as we know it... well, sometimes changes don''t have to destroy the planet to change the world. Maybe something WILL happen - but those bunkers have been there and will always be there *just in case*.

Yes, the world is ending 2012.

Empty your 401K and buy and enjoy Octavias NOW!

Hahah, Kenny: I love your sense of humor!

How about you empty your 401k and send the octavias my way!!

Nope! I''m going to be sitting on my couch with popcorn, watching tv and waiting for the world to continue on, just like I did on December 31, 1999

In case it does end, I''ll be partying hard on 12/21!

My husband thinks there''s going to be a "shift in consciousness." We''ll see. Maybe just like the "missing link," we''ll all move up a level in awareness or something along that line and there will be a huge gap where archaeologists/anthropologists cannot explain what happened.

If I remember correctly, we''re ending the age of Pisces and are going into the age of Aquarius (Aquarius....AQUARIUS!). The Mayan calendar is made up of cycles and 2011/2012 is the end of a major cycle. The Mayans didn''t forecast past this, so in that regard their world "ends" in 2012. No one knows what will happen, all that''s known is that it will be the end of life as we know it. However, like others have said, we constantly are turning over "life" as we know it. Each day brings something new, a new event a new perspective to view the world, people and life as we know it. The point our guide tried to make was regardless of whether it''s just a change of consciousness or the fall of the human race, there''s nothing that people can do to prevent it so you should just open yourself up to the experience and let it happen however it''s going to happen.

I remember during the Cuban Missile Crisis people were building bomb shelters in their backyards. I wanted one, so I could hide out from my mom who was much more dangerous than a nuclear attack. But now I realize that being one of the few to survive a nuclear attack would be horrible. Run toward the light!

Drivel. Period. People who believe in it are seriously simple minded.

There are lots of resources to find out about the Biblical End of Times (which doesn''t necessarily mean the end of the World, just a new beginning). Throughout the Bible there are many Scriptures and Prophecies indicating what will happen at the end of times. Due to forum policy, I don''t think it should be discussed.

When the y2k thing was supposed to happen my friend''s stepdad cashed out his 401k and savings accounts and converted it all into gold bars. Then he dug a hole in the basement floor, put the gold bars in and covered it back up with concrete. Hilarious! Although if he''s kept them in the floor since them it probably wasn''t a terrible idea!

ksinger-interesting article-I hadn''t heard about all of the theories!

HH-hahaha now I''m going to have that song in my head for days! Thanks for the summary-that''s interesting stuff!

somethingshiny-I don''t see how discussing what''s in a book is against forum policies.

Oh well-too lazy to go look it up!

Okay, a twist-if the world was really going to end in 2012, what would you want to do before then? At the very least I''d like to go to the Czech Republic again, go to Japan (never been and it''s on my list) and start smoking again! (Don''t tell my husband that, though!)

I think SS was referring to something that was related to religion, and religious topics are against forum policies.
If you have further questions best to use the Report concern button, or MSG admin button.

But yes, anything about religion is not to be discussed on PS. It''s in the forum policies, I believe Section 9....

Eh. If it ends, it ends. If it does end, it''s not going to matter to us anyway.

Oh I''m well aware that discussing religion isn''t allowed-I just don''t see how it could be against the rules to discuss what the end of the world will look like according to a book, even if that book is the bible. Just a difference of rule interpretation, I suppose. I''m sure Ella will be on top of it if she thinks something is against the forum policies.

Ha, my thoughts exactly-it''s not worth getting worked up about because we''ll all be dead! I do wish I could talk to someone who really believes the world''s going to end-I find it fascinating.

Years ago I was working in a small hospital. The entire kitchen staff was convinced the world was going to end on a certain day and left en masse for Arizona.
Well the date came and went and nothing happened so they came traipsing back.
None of us being good large volume cooks, we were glad to see them.

I plan to be watching the money 2012 in 2013....LOL
