I did the "Opt Out" thing over the phone a few years ago. I never get them in the mail anymore. I was told that every time one of those credit card companies checks your credit, it shows up on your credit rating. So then if you apply for a mortgage, it might look like you''re constantly applying for different credit cards and that can make you look like an undesirable applicant.
I did the mail opt out too, so I don''t get any, but I get phonecalls from a couple of banks I have accounts with about once a month putting quite a hard sell on their own credit cards. It seems to offend them that I don''t have a credit card. One man actually asked what he could say or do to change my mind or was I just being stubborn?
We get two or three a month and they go right into the shredder. If I am pressed to get a credit card I tell them I can''t because I''m in a debt management program . (I''m not)
I am in the "opt out" group. Receiving those offers made me nervous. When I got my first card in 1994, they sent the ACTUAL card with the offer and all you had to do was call to activate it! This was from Capital One! Times have definately changed!
For some odd reason, I''m getting at least 3 a week recently, sometimes up to 5 the last month or two. Why I have no idea - I have a good credit score but my debt to income ratio is
(etc). I wouldn''t think they would keep sending out so many credit offers in these economic times!
I would have to agree... once a month for each probably.
I get them from my Alma Mater, Southwest Airlines, and Disney. I almost never get generic ones from the big name card comapnies... they are always promotions thru someone else.
I''m still getting a deluge (at least 4-5 a week)! My fiance gets about the same amount each week (we live together so are probably on the same customer lists for the big companies as they often arrive together). I shred them all but need to opt out. What a waste of paper!
I don't get any anymore (I think I opted out years ago), but DH has lately received at least two in the mail per week.
ETA: <----Travel Goddess: I don't think your credit score gets hurt when credit companies check your credit for a credit card offer, it's only when you initiate a lot of credit checks for credit cards that it can be an issue.
You know, now that you mention it, I''m not getting them nearly as often. Maybe only once or twice a month now? I get far more mail regarding protecting my mortgage than credit cards now.... Interesting.
