We don''t smoke.

DH and I both smoked in college before we met each other. Both of us quit pretty quickly after we started. Now both of us can''t stand to be around it.

Smoked half pack daily for 15 years. Quit January 12, 2010.
Good for you!

I was a smoker. I quit two years ago this past March.

DH quit in January and I couldn''t be happier!

I admit it: on occasion I do smoke a cigar - especially if I am sitting around a campfire...or in Vegas

Me: No cigarettes. Have never even tried a cigarette. The smell of them makes me gag and I cannot be around it. I have tried cigars a couple times though - just a brief puff here and there.

I DO smoke the sheesha (hookah) pipe with some fine-quality sheesha tobacco straight from the Middle East with DH a few times a year (average of once every 2-3 months more or less). It is terribly bad for you as you just sit there and suck on it slowly all night along with a nice drink. However, we enjoy it on the occasional basis. We have about 6 pipes that DH bought in the Middle East...one of them on display all the time (and that only he and I have ever used), so it is a bit of a tradition for us to indulge in together.

I have also tried smoking pot and the like in my younger teenage rebellion days but have not for years. Now I find it rather silly and don't like being around stoned people.

DH: No cigarettes. He did now and then smoke a cigarette when he was a young gun in the military. Also does not like being around them now though. On the very occasional basis (i.e. once every couple years or less) may have a cigarello or cigar.

Also smokes sheesha pipe with me (he used to smoke it more regularly when he was overseas/in military) a handful of times a year. He very rarely may chew tobacco too. He buys a pouch of it once a year or so and slowly works his way through it. He does worry about the long term effects though so does moderate his overall tobacco use to a few times a year. He has never done any drugs (i.e. never smoked pot) and does not like being around stoned people either. Which is funny as a few of our interests and hobbies tend to bring us around them often and we end up being like "what the....this sucks!".

As odd as it is, if he smoked cigarettes I could not stand it though. I dated a smoker when I was a teenager and it drove me crazy. I hated the smell, taste, and so on.

Despite our occasional use neither he nor I seem to have an "addictive" tendency towards tobacco products though. We enjoy the little buzz we get from the sheesha for example, but can go weeks and months without touching it. We enjoy the atmosphere and ritual that comes from sitting around on pillows, listening to Middle Eastern music, burning some nice incense, talking and leisurely smoking it much much more then we crave any of the tobacco itself.

I used to be pretty anti-tobacco of any kind. My bio dad smoked cigarettes, cigars and pipes and still chews tobacco and I grew up being told it was disgusting and it being drilled into my head that it was bad from my mom. My brother and sister got the same message but both started smoking at 13. My sister stopped almost immediately, my brother continued for about 8 or 9 years until he quit (though he still smokes "on occasion" I think when he gets highly stressed out). His partner does not smoke and despises it. My grandfather died of lung cancer - he had quit when my grandma was diagnosed with cancer but I think the combo of smoking with years of working in mines had already taken a toll. So, I am pretty aware of that.

I have however kind of eased up on myself over the years and given myself some permission to relax on some things. Ironically, I tend to consider my physical health quite a priority though (I run 6 miles everyday, do hot yoga, eat healthy, etc). I just don't see all tobacco or use as so black and white as I used too though.

I don''t smoke. . .

However, last summer I visited a friend and we decided to buy clove cigarettes and drink and we had a really fun time! It was just a silly thing. The clove ones are not as gross as the regular ones.

I don''t smoke and DH doesn''t smoke. Neither of us would have dated or married a smoker. When I walk past anyone smoking I hold my breath or walk in another direction. The smell of it makes me feel very sick.

My father once tried a cigarette with some friends when he was around 15 and my grandmother found out about it. She was so furious she brought him out to the balcony and handed him a bag full of around 200 cigarettes. She told him he couldn''t come inside until he smoked every last one of them. After he got through a couple of them, he felt so sick he couldn''t do it anymore and it scarred him for life - he never touched another cigarette again and is VERY anti-smoking. Also, as a doctor now, he''s seen the effects of smoking and how awful it can be.

My whole family loves to tell this next story - my grandfather used to smoke every single day. For years they all tried to get my him to quit smoking. Nobody liked it and they were worried about his health, but he didn''t particularly want to quit smoking and he said it was too difficult no matter what he tried. When I was around 4 or 5 years old and I looked at my grandfather and asked him to stop smoking because I didn''t like it. He said it was really hard for him and he couldn''t. So I offered him a deal - if he stopped smoking, I would stop sucking my thumb. The next day, he went to an acupuncturist even though he was terrified of needles and he got acupuncture to quit smoking. It worked and he never picked up another cigarette again! I didn''t go through with quitting sucking my thumb, so I guess the deal wasn''t all that fair, but at least I finally got my grandfather to quit smoking!!!

Nope! My mother had cancer a few years ago, and I know it would make her cry if I smoked. She is really into eating healthy and taking preventative measures when it comes to our family''s health. I really admire her and the way she sees it and handles it...she''s not judgmental against smokers; she is good at encouraging others to value their good health and not take it for granted, and to explain where she is coming from as a cancer survivor.

I''m in the "Vehemently anti-smoking" crowd. As is my husband. No one in our extended families smoke and co-workers and friends who smoke smell awful to me.

I watched a documentary that showed the black, crusted over lungs of a smoker at death compared to the pink, fleshy (non-crusty) lungs of a non-smoker at death. Um, that pretty much sold me.

That and I watched my high school best friend''s father die of lung disease. He wouldn''t even take off his oxygen to smoke. It was awful to watch. He kept saying there were worse ways to die....

Lol. I''ll fess up. I am an icky smoker. I smoke cloves, Djarum Blacks. I never do in public, with the occasional exception outside bars at night- I would never smoke just walking down a sidewalk or something... it just seems rude... plus, I''m embarrased to be seen smoking around the town I live in. I know most people except my sister and my best friend- oh, and my mom- don''t know I smoke.

I actually smoked from 14-19 (mostly cloves, but sometimes Marlboro Lights), quit cold turkey at 19 and made my then-fiance quit too. So I didn''t smoke for years. Then my sister and I started smoking cloves (again) together two years ago- we''d both quit at about 19 together; we''d started smoking together at 14. And then DH started sneaking them from me- he also quit when we were 19. And now we''re both smoking them fairly regularly. Atrocious! I have NO justification for starting again. It was stupid. I will say that I didn''t find it difficult to quit, oddly enough. Hopefully that''ll hold true this time... probably not though.

I can''t stand regular cigarettes- if I don''t have cloves, it''s nothing.

Cloves don''t reek quite as much as regular cigarettes but still, stinky... I am really obsessive about washing my hands and brushing my teeth after smoking. And I only wear one jacket outside to smoke, and I never wear Stinky Jacket for anything else. Since WA doesn''t allow smoking in bars, I think the only time I''ve ever smoked inside was a couple of times with my aunt in Las Vegas in a casino, last year. I would never ever smoke in the house! Ugh.

I see clove cigarettes almost like cigars. Kind of an indulgence after a meal! lol The last time I smoked one was last summer, though, not as a regular habit. . .it'd be fun to buy a pack and have one every once in a while.

A gal at the bank I go to smokes outside and she wears a smokers' jacket. I never knew she smoked till I saw her outside one day. Isn't there a law here in WA that a person cannot be within 25 feet of a building while smoking? Many people do not follow that. It kinda bugs me, however, not as much as when people smoke at a kids' park!
