Just curious how many PSers we have who smoke...cigarettes, cigars, whatever. Does your spouse? Or are you vehemently anti-smoking?

Vehemently anti-smoking. Me and my FF do NOT smoke. Neither of my siblings smoke, his sister does, as does his mother, and both of my parents.

I started smoking when I was 17 and quit cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant at age 23. No more smoking for me, I can''t stand the smoke smell anymore and I am with the kiddo all day.

Nope, and neither does my husband.

No smoking!! DH smoked before we got married, him quitting was actually a stipulation of me saying "yes." I cannot live with a smoker.

My mom, dad, sister, BIL all smoke. My bro and SIL used to smoke. All of my aunts, uncles and granparents smoke/smoked.

No one in DH''s family smokes.

no thanks, no and NOOOOO

I''m very anti-smoking. The smell gives me a massive headache and my popa died a pretty slow and gruesome death due to a variety of smoking related illnesses. My older sister smokes because her BF does and she''s an idiot (not just because of the smoking) and my brother dosn''t smoke cigerettes but does smoke uhh...other herbal substances.

Nobody in my family smokes (with the exception of my grandfather who died in 2004 at the age of 89...he smoked pipes from the age of 14 until he died).

My dh occasionally smoked cigars with "the boys"

but luckily my strong anti smoking stance has convinced him not to smoke even occasionally anymore...at least for now.

What is it with men and smoking cigars? I find it nauseating and it is very very smelly

I don''t smoke, nor does DH. I generally like the company of smokers, I find them to be a bit more laid back in general, I just don''t want to pick up the habit.

I'm in the vehemently anti-smoking crowd. I think it smells gross and don't want to think about what it does to the lungs.

eta: No one in either my or DH's immediate family smokes. My dad smoked cigars before I was born (only outside) and my mom made him stop when she was pregnant and he never did it again.

No. DH does and I hate it. Some family members of mine smoke, most of my in-laws (MIL, FIL, SIL, SMIL, uncles, cousins, etc) do too.

Nope, and noone in either family either.

Can''t stand the smell - I start coughing right away.

No. Now no one in my extended family smokes. But I grew up with a smoking Mom -- who smoked through six kids & several decades. She quit cold turkey about 10 years ago after missing a fun family trip due to severe bronchitis. She calls it a blessing every time I see her, mostly because she knows she''d never be able to be around her four grandkids if she still smoked.

Being around it for so long, with all its ickiness (especially when done in excess) ironically made it easier for all of us siblings to avoid any peer temptations or curiosity/experimentation which can lead to addiction.

I do not smoke and FI doesn''t smoke (used to, but quit before we met- lucky him!)

Both of my parents smoke and my grandparents did as well. Having to grow up in that... well.... there is NO WAY I would subject my kids to that.

As a kid, I had bronchitis a few times and (believe it or not) whopping cough once. I would be coughing my lungs out, tears streaming down my cheeks, and my parents wouldn''t even bother to just go outside to smoke while I was sick. Instead, dead of winter I WENT OUTSIDE so I could breathe

They are not like that anymore (thank god) and have cut down and don''t smoke in the house or car, but I still remember those times. Vividly. I remember leaving my grandparents house reeking like smoke. I''d have to come home and shower and wash my clothes to get the stench out- every single time.

People that smoke just make me sad. It''s like slowly watching them die, and for no good reason. I want to help, but nothing really "helps".

I''ve met a few people in the past that like smoking and are just jerks about it, very "in your face" and whatever.

Nope. Yuck.

Many of my friends do though. I hate the stench of cigarette smoke in my hair and clothes. I was never so happy as when the smoking ban came in here.

Gross habit.

Nope, not a smoker and no one in my family smokes either. I used to smoke, though, so I can''t hate smokers a bit! And sometimes I still miss cigarettes even though it''s been almost 7 years since I quit. (Quit cold turkey on a cross country road trip.)

My mom used to smoke but quit right after she had me and my twin sister (that''s right-she smoked while she was pregnant with me and my 4 siblings!), so I don''t ever remember her smoking. Now she HATES the smell of smoke so much that it''s hard to believe she used to smoke herself!

My older sister actually just told me a story about being in the car with my mom and her parents while all 3 of them were smoking with the windows up. She said she told them the smell was making her sick and my mom told her to stop complaining because she was being rude! HAHAHA we all had a good laugh about that one.

Answering my own question: neither my DH nor I smoke. No one in our family does except DH's brother. I can't stand the smell of smoke!

Both of my paternal grandparents were smokers, they both died in their sixties. My maternal grandparents were casual smokers, but stopped once it came out that it was bad for you. My maternal great aunt would start smoking again in a heartbeat if they came out with one that wasn''t bad for you, she just loved it. My parents never smoked a single cigarette. I tried it for a weekend when I was 18 but decided it just wasn''t for me. It made my hand smell bad, which is odd because I used to LOVE the smell of cigarettes as a child. My fiance has never smoked. I don''t think I could live with a smoker.

I did from 14 to 25. I quit August of 2000. I still miss it at times. I thought it was tremendously hard. I went cold turkey-chewed a lot of gum and pen caps.

My parents still smoke and still go on and on about "if the prices keep going up we''re quitting" but I''ve heard that since I was a little kid, so quit believing it a long time ago. Mom won''t quit if dad won''t, and he''s always got a reason why he can''t-vaca coming up or who knows what. I can''t stand the smell and I can''t stand being around it anymore.

Nope, and neither does FI

Don''t get me started on smoking, I see the effects of it everyday on children....but I realize it is a tough addiction to break.

Not a smoker. Cigarette smoke makes me nauseous. That aside, I never saw the appeal on the rare occasion that I tried it.

Additional questions to the original topic (hope you don''t mind Laila)

Have you ever tried smoking? If so, how old were you? Did you decide to start/never smoke at that time?

I was 8 when I tried smoking. Cigarettes were very easy to come by in my house. I did it because I was with a whole group of neighborhood kids. A couple of them were smokers (late elementary school and jr high). I nearly choked to death and decided I''d never smoke.

My dad has smoked since he was 6 yrs old! (he''s currently 51)

Nope-neither DH nor I smoke or have ever tried smoking of any substance.

DH''s parents smoked when he was little by quit when he was in late elem, school

my parents did not smoke

Neither DH or I have ever smoked. But.. three of our five kids have. Makes me very unhappy. I think they wanted to do all the things we didn''t! DD has quit now. Yeah! My brain injured son decided it made him

cooler, and we have been fighting that. But the best news, is my 3rd child, DS went into rehab about three weeks ago, (TeenChallenge) and they made him quit cold turkey. He is doing great and smoke free!

I hope and pray he doesn''t go back to either. This is long term rehab so he has a really great chance. Plus, he knows we are not letting him come home until the year is up, and we have disabled his car.

My parents smoked. My sisters and I grew up with it in our home, and not one of the three of us every lit up. We hated it then, and we hate it now.

But, remember, smokers were the norm when we grew up in the 50s - 70s. No one gave smoking a second thought, and since nearly everyone did it, you didn''t really notice how the smell permeates everything.

Smoking is so infrequent in public places now, you are definitely not used to the stink of it. It seems even more offensive now by comparison.

Another vote for vehemently anti-smoking. No one in any of our families smoke. I would never have dated/married someone who smoked. I HATE the smell and it gives me headaches!

I''ve never tried it, nor have I ever been tempted to. My husband says the same thing - never has, never would.
My mom smoked while we were little kids and we drove her nuts begging her to stop (she was a nurse and should (like all the other nurses who smoke/smoked) have known better!)

I''m glad to hear about your son''s success so far in rehab - it''s a very hard battle. I will keep him and you in my thoughts

No, I don''t smoke. But I love good cigar smoke. Don''t ask me why. Real cigars, not those little skinny things.
