only the southern states say "supper time" and the rest part of our country say "dinner time"?

We say dinner time. My grandpa used to say supper time, but he was the only one. He was born in Germany. Wonder if that was why.

Linda

from the south and i say dinner.
i don''t care for the word supper.

We say dinner in the northeast, although I have heard a few people from here say supper. I prefer dinner though.

How about basement vs. cellar? We say basement.

Zoe, we say basement too.

My step dad is from up state New York and he says supper. I am from Michigan and I have always said dinner.

Time for dinner if you have company dining with you, supper if you''re eating alone or as a family (I''m reading this from DeBrett''s etiquette guide. I don''t get out much)

I''ve lived in FL, TX and GA-we''ve always said dinner (mind you, I am a second generation immigrant, so there may be some inconsistencies.) Sometimes we don''t say "Time for Dinner!!" at all, and just have our butler ring his crystal bell.

(We say basement, too!)

Time for dinner. My grandparents used to say supper.

I have always wanted to say Supper since it sounds fun; I never have though! hehe

I guess it is like do you say "POP, SODA, or COKE?" I say soda and sometimes coke, never pop! My dad says pop! hehe

Ditto

Debrett''s is great. I gave a friend of mine their ''Girl''s Guide to Etiquette'' as a b-day present recently - it has all sorts of useful tips on things like ''handling a one night stand''

I''ve also given a copy of their ''Correct Form'' to my SIL - she''s from the USA, but working over here and kept having to call me for advice.

I am from upstate (western) NY... and I say dinner, and basement

For women!

Dinner and basement here in Chicago!

Cellar - room under your house where you keep junk and wine.

Basement - the floor below pavement level, ie Basement Flat.

Dinner, basement and Pop here.

Depends on whether I am speaking English or not

, over here though most people say dinnertime or it is teatime. Supper is usually what you have as a late night snack after dinner.

we say dinner around here

Hummm… I say dinner and cellar. I was raised in North Carolina and live in South Florida

I was born and raised in Western Maryland . . . we drink soda with our dinner, and store things in the basement!

Dinner, basement and pop...suburban chicago

Dinner vs. Supper depends -

Supper is an evening meal.

Dinner is the biggest meal of the day.

Therefore, Christmas dinner could be served at noon, but DH and I could go out for dinner this evening (we could also go out for supper).

I''m from Central IL, but my families are both from Northern Missouri, so this is where I think the dinner/supper thing comes from. DH''s parents are from the Chicago suburbs and he laughed the first time I referred to a lunchtime meal as "dinner."

Pop not soda

Basement, not cellar (unless you are storing wine there or it''s practically made out of mud).

There was an interesting thread awhile back with different dialectal differences...anybody have the link for it? I can''t even remember what it was called, but I know there were TONS of doozies in there!

My extended family calls the noon meal dinner and the evening meal supper. When I moved to TX, dinner was dropped out of our immediate family''s vocabulary and we had lunch and supper. As an adult, I call it supper if it''s at home, but dinner if we''re going out.

yep, dinner,soda and dungeon.

dinner time !!

Dinner for me. Supper for my grandparents and Dad. They are all from Canada orginally.

I grew up everywhere so I''m not sure why I say dinner. I lived in Michigan when I was little so it was Dinner and Basement for me.

I''m in CA now and we don''t have basements!
