do you really watch what you eat?

At first no. I was one of those people who could eat whatever I wanted and stayed slender. I did notice that plenty of foods made me feel sick, and fortunately those were junk foods, so I gave those up.

Then perimenopause hit. What is that thing around my middle? Why don't my jeans fit anymore?

So I'm careful now, not only for weight, but also because so many unhealthy foods make me feel really sick. Too rich, too salty, too sweet...who knows what doesn't agree with me.

I have found that when I went off wheat and dairy (for acid reflux and gluten intolerance), that spare tire melted away...but some days I really miss both!

DF, maybe what you could do is go for the 80/20 rule. Eat very healthy 80% of the time and then add a few things in here and there. After a while you can up that to 90/10 and so on.

I try to set a good example for my kids, which includes sweets in reasonable portions at least 4 days a week!

I have a degree in Nutrition, so while I don't watch my calories, I think I make healthy choices for myself and my family...such as multigrain bread vs white bread, fruit and veggies with every meal, and leaner protein choices, chicken, fish..with steak thrown in about 1x a month. I have growing kids, so there lots of exceptions to "healthy meals"...dh will take them out for chili dogs and nacho type stuff at least 2x a week! I usually don't eat the same stuff as them, I'd just heat up leftovers that I make myself, I love the food I cook. All of us are pretty active too, we all workout or have sports practices, and I make the whole family go swimming with me or running with me on weekends, so we eat a LOT to fuel our bodies!

Good topic! I've always been very petite and used to be very sporty in highschool so could eat whatever I liked with no apparent effect. Then I turned 26 and it's like a switch flicked - suddenly the weight started to creep on :angryfire:

I gained 5 kilograms in 5 years and being so short - it really showed! My husband also used to be overweight and we decided to get healthier together. He lost 30 kilograms and is fighting fit, I've lost that 5kg and we both feel amazing. He is my biggest motivator and really makes me feel positive about myself.

We don't count calories but basically try to minimise carbs & sugar in our diet, we eat almost no junkfood/takeaway/sweets and make sure we do some form of exercise every single day (even just walking the dogs). If we want a treat - go ahead and eat it. Just not every day. Our diet is lots of fresh fruit, veggies and lean meats such as grilled turkey. It's a simple balanced diet and for us personally it works. :wavey:
