It''s 3-1 in my home...the gals prefer it under (rolls easily). My husband prefers it over (which tears all the time).

Over. I assume when people put it under it''s a mistake.

My husband converted me to over when he pointed out that that way it avoided contact with the wall/holder ....

Over

ha, best thread ever--is there some kind of etiquette rule? Because i always prefer over since it looks neater, but maybe that''s just b/c of the way I grew up with it being? DH does it under...and I always switch it around.

Under.

Agreed. I hate when it is just hanging there, touching the wall. I also think it looks prettier, well as pretty as toilet paper can look, when it lies flat on top.

I prefer over - and so do my cats [easier to unroll into a pile on the floor].

Sorry under folks, you are doing it wrong. I have spoken.

Believe it or not, Oprah once discussed this topic on her show! I always have it over just as Oprah's guest suggested.

Over!
And I will turn it around when my husband puts it the other way.
I''ve yet to do so at another person''s house, but when I''m slightly older and crazier, I imagine I will.

and I change it when he puts it over. It drives me nuts to have to pull it hard and it breaks. I have changed it in someone''s home (my cousin) and she changed it right back. We LOL

All tp holders hold it wrong.

I''ve never had the experience of it breaking! My preference is purely aesthetic. Maybe I buy really strong paper, or our toiletpaper holders are looser, or something and they spin more easily.... hmm.

I went through a phase a teenager where I would fold the little end into a point, like they do at some hotels. You can''t do that when it''s under!

I turn the TP over, as well, when my DH puts it in the other way.

What is annoying is that all the TP holders in my house (we have three bathrooms) all have the holders installed on the left side as if designed for a left-handed person. Often I do not even have the roll in the holder b/c of that!

LOL I''m the opposite. I think it looks neater when its on the bottom and always think people make mistakes when they put it over

over over over...I always thought that was the right way (?)

funny thing, my FMIL is very domestic, neat, proper, trendy, sophisticated, etc...etc, and her toilet paper is always UNDER. I snicker to myself every time I notice it

Well, I''m older and crazier and have been sorely tempted! It is one of those things that drives me crazy. It must be over, yet my husband does it under every time, and has never noticed that I correct it! Of course, he doesn''t notice when new jewelry appears either, so I''ll leave well enough alone.

why do DH''s always put it under? I''m happy to hear my over instincts were right! Emily Post care to comment? ;)

I remember a discussion in a psych class about this where one gentleman commented that "Under works better when you have small children so it is harder for them to unroll playing with it. Once they are older, the tp can be put on the holder the right way" (The same applies to cats until they are trained

Ditto. Ditto.

I used to always fix the TP if it wasn''t over thinking that it was the *right* way. Now, I don''t really care too much but I guess I prefer under...maybe for ergonomic purposes (seeing that it''s easier to unroll)?

My grad school assigned roommates to each other for first-year student housing, and the girl they assigned to share an apartment seemed normal enough for the first couple of days. On the third day, she stormed out of the bathroom, with fury in her eyes and fire in her voice, and accused,

"Did you put on the toilet paper on the holder like that? With the paper rolling out the back? That's not how it's done, that way's... VULGAR!!!"

Needless to say, as someone who'd never given a moment's thought about toilet paper rolls, it was in that moment that I realized that my new roommate was not someone I'd be inviting to join us when I went out with friends.

I honestly don''t have a preference. I put it on depending on the way I grabbed it from the cabinet.

So sometimes its over, sometimes under. FI prefers it over. I think I do too, but don''t care enough to take the extra 0.3 seconds to pay attention.

TGuy and I are both overs. HOWEVER, we will probably convert to unders in the next year. I thought of this when I went to a friend''s house and she has a VERY anal husband. I said, after using the restroom, "wow, I can''t believe you have your TP coming out under! I thought for sure you would be an over person!"

He just pointed to his toddler son and said, "When you have one of those in the house who like to go and spin those things down all the time, you convert to under pretty fast." Made sense to me, so I figure we''ll do the same to spare ourselves any re-rolling or TP wasting.

Over

Grew up under and converted to over to shut husband up. My dad changes them in both bathrooms practically every time he''s here b/c it drives JD batty.
