Do you own a electric rice cooker?

Do you like it? What brand? Expensive?

My friends say we are the only chinese people on earth who doesn't own a electric rice cooker. We still cook rice by using a clay pot.

Actually, my saucepans work on BOTH electric and gas stoves.
Sorry I don't know the name brand or model numbers of my saucepans.
I just buy whatever seems like a good buy at the time, new or used.

It cooks my brown rice and a zillion other things. :clap:
Buying one big thing that does only one thing is not for me.
I have no room, or desire, for unnecessary money-wasting (IMO) crap cluttering up my kitchen.

However the rice comes out (dry, wet, fluffy, sticky) it's always perfectly fine and edible to me and my SO.
Clearly I'm not as picky about my rice as some people are.
But if you are particular about your rice, knock yourself out and buy whatevs you like.

For short grain brown rice (I never eat or make white rice so have no clue how to cook it).

I don't measure it; I just eyeball it.
I put about 1 inch of rice into sauce pan.
Cover rice with about 1 inch of water.
Bring to boil, uncovered.
Reduce heat to very low simmer, cover pan.
Check in 15 minutes or 20 min.
When water is down to the level of the rice turn heat off, cover and let set on stove another 10 minutes or so while final water gets absorbed.

Ha, that was me two years ago... Then my good Korean friend gave me a a rice cooker and we LOVE it. Rice tastes better in it, no need to be next to the stove, if something unexpected happens, rice stays perfect and warm, no burning, no overflowing water, no mush. Makes perfect sushi rice, sticky rice and fluffy basmati ....

Best investment for single purpose small appliance ever..
 
Yes we have one, best thing ever, no more forgetting rice on the cooker....
 
I have one but hardly ever use it.

I prefer my rice cooked in a pot and then steamed for like an hour or so. It comes out fluffy, not wet not dry...just delish! Super fussy about my rice and this is the only way I like it.

We use this one, which is about $140 on Amazon.

I absolutely love this rice cooker! We went through so many crappy ones over the years.
 
Yes, I believe it's the Tiger brand but it's still in the box. I have a Panasonic multi cooker that I prefer to cook my rice in,
 
Yes, we have one like CareBear posted. I hate it, don't know how to use it and think it's too small for us, lol. I think you just have to press a button to start it, but I'm not sure. It does make good rice, but the capacity is small. I've never seen the clay pot @Dancing Fire. It looks interesting.
 
No, never had luck with one, I do it in a pan on the stove.
 
Yes! We have an ancient one that my husband has had for longer than he can remember. Still makes great rice. And we use it so frequently it has a permanent countertop spot in our tiny NYC kitchen. But once this kicks the bucket, we'll get a Zojirushi. I like that we don't have to monitor it, or worry about the rice burning or overcooking.

We have one and it's fine. I usually just use a pot on the stove though because it doesn't take frickin 3 hours to make rice on the stove like the cooker takes. Its ridiculous.

That's so funny, because I love it for the same reason you hate it! We only make 1-1.5 cups each time so my previous rice cookers were way too big. Yep, you just have to press a button to start, so I usually pre-wash the rice, leave it in the pot, and press start an hr before my meal. I think it's the same amount of time regardless how many cups you cook. You can set a timer too but I never bother to use that function.

I’m with Kenny on not having single use gadgets or appliances. I cook rice in the oven in a glass casserole dish or crock Like DF. Comes out perfect every time. I had not thought about using the instant pot.
 
@CareBear I think ours would be fine if we didn't have to serve 6 adults with it. I like to add things, so for us it's just too small. When we were considering it, I wanted the bigger one and DH disagreed. Grr.
 
Zojirushi with the induction cooking mechanism is the best. Thought it was ridiculously expensive but turned out to be worth every penny

About 30 mins. 10 mins on high heat, 5 mins on med heat, 5 mins on low, then off let it sit for 10 mins. The rice will always turn out fluffy.:lickout: My mom taught me how to cook rice in a pot when I was in 6th grade and ever since I have always use a pot.
 
I own the best rice cooker. I bought a small one in college (20 yrs ago) with the bonus check I received from one of my professor.
Get one from Zojirushi. They make the best rice cooker.

You’re not the only one with clay pot. A friend of mine prefers it actually. Taste better she said. Who knows. She also make the onion pancake from scratch so there you have it.

I miss her cooking now since she moved to Canada.

Check the Asian food markets. They come in different sizes, I bought 4 different sizes. Be sure to buy the ones made in Japan not made in China. The Japanese made are more expensive but will last forever. ..unless you drop it on the floor!..:lol:

Yes! Fluffy only! Every grain should be separate!
 
I don't, but I need one! I can't cook rice for shit. I'm so bad at it, I've resorted to minute rice anytime we need rice :oops::lol: Luckily it's pretty hard to screw that up.

No. Don't eat a lot of rice. But when I make cabbage rolls I just cook it on the stove/pot.

My family has always cooked rice using an electric rice cooker. My parents even sought and purchased a 120V in Hong Kong in readiness for their immigration to Canada!

I learnt how to cook rice using a saucepan from about 14yo when I came to UK to attend school - my guardian's girlfriend was (probably still is) a lousy cook, so I had to fend for myself.

I used to have a slow cooker that could cook rice, and would use it when I needed to cook rice in bulk. However, that was left with my ex-hubby when we divorced.

Recently, I bought a Crock-Pot 5.6L Slow and Multi Cooker for my pop up kitchen events, and it cooks rice beautifully. Even better is its ability to cook congee, however, it does take a very long time on slow.

I also bought a 6L dry/13L cooked commercial rice cooker for my pop up kitchen events, and it is very well-built and fast! I made Jamaican Peas and Rice in it recently and it was very nice.

Never had a clay pot like DF's, and I dearly miss rice with wind-dried meat and vegetables cooked in a clay pot.

My dad had a clay pot and liked to cook flavoured rice in it. The burnt and crispy bits at the bottom was never wasted, as he would scrape them off and make a soup with them. It's not the same using the burnt bits from a stainless steel pan somehow when I tried to recreate the soup, hey ho!

@Dancing Fire do you measure the rice and water?

I wash, however, do not soak the rice, and then add sufficient water until it reaches half way up the first joint of my middle finger as I am not keen on my rice being too soft.

Nope. Learning to make rice was a huge rite of passage for me and I feel like it ties me to my family and culture. No rice cooker for me.

My rice is not very good either.

I usually have better luck microwaving it.
