Do You Mix Metals?

I am almost at the end of my pear reset journey - it should be ready next weekend at the latest & I am BEYOND excited to finally be getting my beautiful diamond back in its bespoke forever home. This has set my mind to thinking about my next project, which will be a ring for my 40th next summer that my husband wants to make using the 11 remaining princess diamonds from my original engagement ring.

My wedding set, diamond studs & pendant are all platinum, but I have always, always loved the rich butteriness of yellow 18 carat gold. This will be a RHR & worn without a watch - that is on my left wrist. So my question is, do you ever mix metals? I am not really a mixer, but am slowly falling in love with the idea of a yellow gold RHR, thick & wide, with the diamonds set into the top. Would it look weird for everyday wear? I am leaning towards an estate style, vintage look.

Pics & comments / thoughts please?

No, never ever since I discovered yellow metal did not suit me when I was about 14.

DK :))

Well my wedding band is three golds combined. So that's mixed. Then of course I plan to use that as an excuse to mix golds.

I know what you mean though I've had such a thing for rich 18k gold lately. Do it and never look back! ;)

I mix metals, my e-ring is 14K yellow gold, my wedding band is 18k yellow gold (i love 18k yellow gold, its yummy) most of my right hand rings are either 14k white gold or silver and rose gold..I have some 14k yellow gold rings but i tend to wear the white gold one's more. To balance it all out, my watch is two toned..but mostly white metal.

Alex, how exciting about your ring! :appl: Can't wait to see pix!

I'm another one who has recently fallen in love with rich buttery 18k yellow gold, having been off gold for a few years.

Most of my jewellery is white metal, including my wedding and engagement rings. However, I now have a number of yellow gold RHRs. When I wear those, I also wear yellow gold necklace and earrings - so basically, on my yellow gold days the only thing that's white metal is my wedding set. I think that's OK - well, it has to be since you can't change up your wedding set all the time, and if everything had to match always, you'd be stuck with one metal colour forever.

I always feel better when my earrings, necklace, RHR and bracelet (if any) are the same metal. I kind of see the wedding set as a thing on its own, you know? But I can't wear a white gold necklace and a rose gold bracelet, for example, or white gold earrings and a yellow gold necklace. I wouldn't feel right.

So basically, I feel that as long as the rest of your "parure" matches, it doesn't matter if it's a different colour from the wedding set some days - especially since the wedding jewellery is on an arm of its own, you know?

I don't think it will look weird at all. Personally I don't care for matchy matchy and I think it all goes-yellow and white metals. Plus from a small distance it can be difficult to even make out the difference in metal colors anyway. But in any case I think it will look lovely. I mainly wear white metals (rings all platinum and necklaces/earrings/watches mainly white gold) but I do occasionally wear yellow gold earrings and/or necklaces with my rings and I think it looks great. I am excited for you to be getting your pear reset Alex! Looking forward to seeing it on your lovely hand! :appl:

Definitely, mix away. It sounds beautiful. I am ready to see yellow gold and diamond rings make a come back.

Ooh, thank you everyone! This ring will be stand alone on my right hand, with no bracelets or watch, so although everything else is white, I am just besotted with the thought of a 50's style, wide, buttery diamond set chunk of gold sitting on its own

So I think I may start exploring. Thank you for the input everyone! And rest assured my pear with be in SMTB as soon as I get it home! :wavey:

I'm a total mixer.

My every day stuff is as follows:

My studs are 18K yellow gold, but they're studs so you can't really tell.

I have a BGD barbara that is rose gold.

I wear a vintage cartier trinity on my right hand.

My left hand alternates with my new antique oval halo that is yellow and white gold or my OEC that is in 9k rose gold.

I also have a Sholdt in rose gold that I will wear on my right hand instead of my trinity but I haven't been doing that much lately.

I have two main watches, one is a Michele that is white metal with a diamond bezel and the other is a Michael Kors that is tri-tone. I've been wearing the MK pretty consistently as of late.

The funny thing is that before I knew about PS I would have NEVER ever wore anything other than white metal. Now, I hardly have anything that is white metal. Turns out my skin tone works better with rose gold or even yellow gold. But I still love white metals. So I choose to wear it all. :naughty:

My Cartier Trinity ring was my first piece of mixed metal and non-white at all. I have now started buying some yellow gold pieces. I have since acquired yellow gold ball studs, tri-color knot earrings, yellow diamond earrings in yellow gold, a Tahitian pearl in yellow gold on a yellow gold chain and an ametrine wrapped in yellow gold wire.

I have decided that yellow diamonds set in yellow gold are the most delicious things ever and I hope to add a yellow diamond 7 stone band within the next few years and possibly a yellow diamond pendant as well. I so wish I could stare at my earrings all day and I'm jealous of the other people I'm around who get to look at them, ha!

I think the idea you have for a RHR sounds fabulous!

My thoughts on the mixing: since you have ALL white metal so far, I would try to pull in one other small piece of YG to balance it out. Maybe 2 thin 18k YG bangles (brushed would be cool) worn on the other side with your watch or a thin YG eternity in the middle of your set....just a small little nod to yellow gold somewhere else would tie it all together I think. ;)

I mix. I have a 14k yg e-ring & diamond band that I pair with either a rose gold diamond eternity band or a rose sapphire half eternity band. I wear a silver bangle every day on my left wrist, and am saving for a white gold asscher rhr. I think matching metals looks a bit old fashioned, where as mixing metals looks fresh and very pretty.

Thanks ladies!

Valmanin - I like your idea :wavey: I was thinking a little while ago that I might like a skinny rose or yellow gold band to wear between my eternity & pear, so I might look into that nearer to the time. Or a further yg DBTY to add to my left hand bracelet stack? Hmmm...

Teets - is that you on your avatar?? Because that is one seriously beautiful lady! We don't often see 'real people' on PS :wavey:

I have mixed 24k YG, 22k YG, 18k YG, 14k WG, and platinum jewellery before. My necklace and pendant is almost always either 24k YG, 22k YG and/or 18k YG. My bracelet is either silver or 22k YG. My earrings are either 22k YG or 14k YG. My rings tend to be platinum but I sometimes wear 24k YG and 18k YG rings. I also own 2 toned rings and pendants (yellow and white metal).

Just bumping this up :))

Anyone have any pics to show me of your mixed metal rings that you would wear at the same time? My husband has asked for my thoughts seeing as its my big birthday in 4.5 months & he knows jewellery designing is a lengthy process.

Do you think seeing as my original e-ring is plat that I should reset into plat as a homage? Dreading getting this decision wrong :errrr:

I have no problem wearing pink gold pendants with my platinum rings, I also like the way pink gold and platinum look when worn on the same finger (thin stacking bands with e-ring). But what I don't like is exactly what you're describing- different metals on different fingers.
I think the looks are so different, that they compete more than compliment each other.

BUT- that's just my opinion. In the end, wear what YOU love.

P.S. I only mentioned pink gold instead of yellow, because I don't wear YG with my skin tone.

hey wait a second - you got married a few hours ago and you're on Pricescope?!
It's like a second home...so of course : )

Andelain - great pics & lovely jewellery! Thank you for sharing - your things all seem to look great together! These are just the kind of pics I am looking for.

You do however, have FAR too many Rolex watches & you should post one to me for my big Birthday :Up_to_something:

I don't know if I'm the devil's advocate, but I find that I like mixed metals and sometimes not. For instance, I like the tricolor effect in Niel's wb. I guess when I don't like mixed metals is when it also mixes styles - so a white gold art deco ring on the same hand as a modern yellow gold ring/bracelet I would find jarring, like, oh I don't know, wearing pleated corduroys with a hawaiian shirt! But if you are wearing one color gold on one hand, I would not think twice about a different color on the other. :))

This is my exact issue, minous. I have never, ever been a metal mixer. I always wore 22ct & 18ct yellow gold - the norm here in the UK for gold. I only wear platinum now because of my husband. I have diamond studs that were 18ct yellow but you couldn't see much of the basket. Six weeks after I met my hubby he bought me a diamond solitaire pendant in plat go with the studs - he hadn't looked closely at them to notice. So I had my studs reset into plat. Then he proposed with a plat ring, so wedding & eternity were plat. Then he bought me (at different times) 2 Tiffany DBTY bracelets in plat, etc, etc. And so it goes on. At heart i am a buttery 18ct yellow gold girl.

One of the mummies at my daughters school is from a long & historical family of considerable estate (think Downtown Abbey :)) ) and all of her jewellery is plat. EXCEPT her chunky rhr, which is a thick, vintage, diamond & emerald encrusted heavy band from her grandmother. And it looks super delicious - I fawn over it every time I see her. So this is *I think* what kind of lool I am after. First world problems....

I also mix metals. Sometimes I feel matchy-matchy and sometimes anything goes. My hair is silver and gold (with some rose) since I'm a strawberry blond staying au naturel. Maybe I should get a trinity ring to match?
