I told a co-worker one time that I buy a lot of my jewelry in pawn shops and for some reason she keeps bringing that up. The last time she made a comment about it in a group of people I told her that when I retire from this state job, I hope to work in a pawn shop and sell LOTS of jewelry! She's disrespecting me when she says it but don't let the gray hair fool you, I may talk slow but I'm NOT slow. I know jealousy when I hear it. (I proudly wear all my jewelry to work.) By the way, this was said by a woman wearing a "chocolate" diamond from a chain store and thought it was the best thing ever. But me, being as nice as I am, didn't utter a word.

Some people just have nothing nice to say and only know how to sit on their throne and look down on others. I hope you get your dream pawn shop job someday, sounds like a lot of fun.

The other best part about that is that I really like dealing with people. (I've learned a lot from people who worked in pawn shops.)

When I told some of my friends that I was going into pawn shops looking for jewelry, I was getting some strange looks.
But we've got to think about good local sources to indulge our bling habit.
Ebay is there for all the world to see.
But the pawn shop gets foot traffic only.
Some shops are better for jewelry than others.
 
My daughter loves jewelry, but probably not as much as I do. I wish I didn't like it so much!

Blame my parents. And Greg too because until he came into the picture my love of jewelry was dormant but he started showering me with pretty bling and the rest is history. Or herstory. :)

And the ring that IMO started it all.
My dad's idea to buy this ring for my mom. It was always my dad's idea to get her jewelry and he had to convince her each time because my mom is way more frugal than my dad.

So the short answer is yes, both of my parents appreciate beautiful jewelry. As much as I do I would say. But they aren't as vocal about it and never joined a jewelry forum. But then again they can barely text let alone use a computer lol.

@missy You are stunning and your family is so beautiful. One can see the love and happiness. And that Cartier Black Opal is so magnificent! It is pure romance and love pouring out of your dad to your mom and your mom giving it to you is the sweetest thing ever.
And to this lovely thread - nope I'm on my own. That's why I love PS. I think my friends and family are realizing that my jewelry is very important to me and it's my hobby and what I love so the feedback is lightening up lol.

I live close to the Gulf Coast and I think the pawn shops get a lot of casino traffic, especially to see more than buy. On the other hand, I've been told in the shop that people fly in from other countries, especially Japan, and scoop up the smaller, very fine, diamonds and take them back. I'm talking like common sizes of 1/4 carat but excellent quality.

I sleep with my jewelry of the day in a little bitty jewelry case next to my bed. I put them all in just before heading upstairs. I carry it with my cell phone..We all go to bed at the same time. :lol: My husband used to give me side looks but it doesn’t faze him now. When I take out the mother load to pick out what I want to wear for the day..he laughs. No one else but all of you would understand how much I love jewelry.

Trust me....we all understand perfectly. My jewelry is the first thing off when I get home and the last thing I put on before I leave the house. I made a necklace hanger for my necklaces in my bedroom. What I don't wear is mostly hidden, plus the German Shepherd will "greet" any stranger who tries to come in the house in a most unfriendly manner.

Are you sure @missy that a “mature age adoption” of me is out of the question.
On the plus side I’m already “raised” quite nicely.
I say please and thank you. I keep my room tidy, don’t slam doors and will not come home late drunk and disorderly.
Oh, and I LOVE cats.

My nieces are interested in jewelry but not nearly as much as I am. :bigsmile: One sister likes delicate antique jewelry, although she also adores pearls. A couple friends like pearls, as compared to me loving pearls. Haha! My sisters-in-law both appreciate sparklies and really like to wear them, as compared to me loving sparklies.

So, the above group is probably in the 50%-love for pretties, while I'm in the 110%...Hence being here on PS. :love:
 
First there was my mother.

For her jewelry is a mandatory accessory that makes or breaks an outfit. When she packs, she lays out the jewelry to go with each outfit.

Once the kids were old enough for her to go back to work until she retired, my mom was always buying jewelry or designing/redesigning pieces with her jeweler. I remember her taking me to Intergem shows back when they were multi-floor events. I would be appalled at how much she spent on her jewelry hobby and used tell her she was throwing her money away :-o All of my older pieces of fine jewelry are from her (or gifts my husband had her pick out for him). The funny thing is I don't recall her often wearing her finer pieces and more often than not wears costume pieces which she considers more fun.

Then there is my elderly neighbor.

After her husband passed away, I started spending time with her. Her husband loved jewelry as much as she did. She has a massive collection and would talk about how she and her husband would go to the jewelers, Tucson and other gem/jewelry shows, etc. Hearing this, I started taking her to the Intergem and local gem shows. She shared her love for colored stones, rare stones and pearls. Unlike her, I wasn't used to spending money on fine jewelry. But that gradually changed as I spent more time with her. So much of my obsession is all her fault (boistered by PS :bigsmile: ) Due to health issues, she hasn't been able to go to any shows in recent years but she always loves bringing out her pieces or seeing mine.

My mum loves jewellery and I think that’s where I get it from but she isn’t obsessed as I am :mrgreen: may have also created a monster in my best friend…:shifty:
 
My youngest daughter definitely gets it from me so much so she proceeded to tell me I can’t sell any of my jewelry! Of course there was a discussion about who it actually belongs to
 
Several years ago, a coworker shared my enthusiasm for jewelry and we would occasionally spend our lunch hour checking out downtown jewelers and estate stores. Her mother had inherited a wonderful collection and I wished I could have seen the family safe!

My watch collection attracted a lot of attention. On one occasion I took 5 manual wind watches in for a service and after collection from the watchmaker I wore all 5 at once. They were astonished that I had “5” watches.
5 ! Ha, at my zenith I had 72 watches. I have downsized.

I don't know where I got my love of jewellery, certainly not from my mum as she hardly wears any.

It might have started to develop when I went to a jeweller to have my ears pierced when I was 11 yo, followed by jewellery shopping trips with her for items for her as well as items for me. :kiss2:

Apart from a high end Swiss-made diamond watch (a VC) that is not to my taste, she has given me all her other pieces, like the 2ct+ Ruby cabochon diamond cluster ring, a 1.94ct MBR that was originally in a ring now re-set as a bangle bracelet, and a set of carré cut diamonds now set in a identity-style bracelet.

Of the pieces made for me in my early teens, I still have the near 1cttw diamond studs. With hindsight, I should have kept the pieces I hardly wore that I sold for repurposing at a later date; however, I needed the money for relocation purposes at the time, so no regret there.

My mum does not and cannot know how much I spend on blings, or she will have a fit! :lol-2:

She has seen my carré cut bracelet and liked it. She has not seen the bangle bracelet with her 1.94ct MRB yet, hopefully the next time I see her, whenever that may be!

My maternal grandfather, my paternal grandmother and my mom. My grandfather had wonderful pieces made for my grandmother who unfortunately all got list but very few during WWII.

My grandmother liked jewelry and taught her sons to buy jewelry die their wives.


My mom liked antique pieces when this was a very niche and unusual approach. Her collection is small and whimsical and well curated , but she hardly wears anything except her wedding set since my dad passed away.

My brother in law didn't have a wedding band by choice because he felt he hadn't found anything truly meaningful. She offered him (after consulting with us daughters) my dad's wedding ring and he's been wearing it every day since. This warms my heart.

Nope! I am teased frequently about my hoarding issues. Both jewelry/jade and watches and glasses. My husband has his own collection "issues", so we just balance each other out. I'm trying to just hold the heck still and not buy anything for a while.
