It is not:

related to baking or cooking.
an earring back.
a flying saucer.
flame-related, although for all I know there might have been flames involved in its making.

It is a part of my PS experience, and apparently part of Pyramid's as well.

Waiting to see if there are others who can relate before the big reveal...

Well, this is a very technical explanation of what my imagination is thinking:

Is it the thingie the jeweler puts the metal in in order to melt it down to whatever shape is desired?

Nope, it's not a crucible. For perspective, each of those things is about 2 feet in diameter (though it's more likely to be manufactured or sold with a metric measurement.)
