Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Heck no! I'm TERRIFIED of public speaking, not to mention I can't stop the expletives when I'm nervous. Oh, and I can talk faster than anyone else I've ever met, and it only gets worse when I'm nervous. We were required to give a three minute speech my senior year of high school--I knew I'd rush it, so I deliberately wrote the speech to be ten minutes long. My actual time was 1 minute, 34 seconds. No joke. It's bad.

You can pratice your speech here....

;))

Oh that's not it?? :?:

To answer your question, Yes,. But wasn't always like that. I raise a lot of money, and tell it from the heart.

I get nervous sure. But telling it from the heart, it's your truth, and that's something you know more than anyone...

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yes, I tend to do well under pressure. I'm literally sick to my stomach until it's go time and then something clicks and I get calm and comfortable. I'm pretty awesome at job interviews if I do say so myself! :praise:

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yes! I regularly lecture to 100 plus people. It is like a one woman show. Fun when you get used to it.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Generally no, but if I thought of it as a dare I could. It really would depend on what the topic was and who the audience was. Some things I would have no problem with. Just totally would depend. I have one child with NO stage freight. In fact he comes to life on stage. He always impresses his teachers with his speaking ability and never has any fear. He LOVES being the center of attention - the more the better. It feeds him.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yep, I have no problems talking in front of a lot of people....I actually really like it!

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yes, I spoke at my graduation in front of thousands and many, many other times to the entire school. I would actually rather speak to an entire football stadium full of people than a small group....can't see individual faces that way :cheeky: .

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

I used to be a performer so it doesn't really bother me much anymore. The most nervous I've ever been was speaking at a funeral, probably because it was such a sensitive moment and I was very vulnerable. It's hard to cry in front of an entire church!

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

I hate speaking in front of large groups of strangers . . . I freeze like a deer in headlights!!! :errrr:

But I teach riding lessons, and I have no problem at all with talking in front of a class of like five or six riders. :))

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Public speaking is something I've always wanted to become good at, but somehow I've never been able to do very well without sounding very nervous and breathless and having my voice crack. I had no reason to ever think I'd be speaking in front of a crowd before and then my husband and I joined our marriage ministry (like Marriage Encounter). After years of being a couple in the background, we tool a giant step forward and took a big job which entailed running the monthly meetings. The thing is, whenever we couldn't get a couple to volunteer to speak for a meeting, we had to write a talk and give it ourselves. There were years when we had to give a presentation four or five times a year. A quarter of a Xanax is what made it possible for me to be able to speak to a crowd. I don't know what it is either, that prevents me from sounding calm and steady. I'm not afraid of people, I'm not unsure of the material we're speaking about. It's just something that's haunted me ever since I was in grade school. Yet some couples get up there and speak for hours and think nothing of it. I do wish I was better at it because if I was, we'd be presenting weekends to new couples just like the rest of our friends. In our circle, it's very embarrassing that I can't do it.

I don't like to do it but i can. The last time i was part of a group presenting a seminar about the language development study i work for.

I was as nervous as anything but i 'seemed' calm up there and nailed my part of the presentation. I was definately on a high afterwards!

I have no plans on getting back up there any time soon though. :cheeky:

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

No, I am very shy.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

i can do it-- but i don't like doing it!

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

If it's a topic I know very well, I'm fine. If it's something I'm not as well versed in, then I can appear nervous. Either way, I usually feel sick to my stomach until I've been talking for a few minutes, then I settle down.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Ehh, I'm ok at it I guess, but not great.

Unlike most who are nervous leading up but then do well, I am completely calm before the speech, but clam up as soon as I get started and forget what I was going to say. Happens everytime whether I'm giving a speech, playing an instrument, whatever. I hate it! I'd much rather it be the other way around. I've gotten better as I get older though, because I care less about what people think about me - I'm able to relax and go with it now.

I will have to give plenty of presentations for my job, often in front of executives, so it's just something to deal with and not worry about. I need to worry more about preparing and knowing that I have things covered than worrying about being nervous.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

I used to do it all the time in my work, all over the world. Sometimes with translators, sometimes in English or Italian or French, which I also speak. Got to enjoy it.

Instead of thinking the audience was going to snicker at you, picture yourself when listening to a speaker -- you want her to do well, don't you? If she catches your eye, you smile encouragingly, right? People listening to YOU feel the same way. When I realized that, I was never nervous again.

If you have to give a talk, rehearse it in front of a mirror till it comes out naturally, then quit or you'll sound over-rehearsed & robotic. While you're yakking away up there, concentrate on your subject, your knowledge of it & you'll forget there's anybody in the room. Speak from the heart. If something goes wrong, as it frequently does, no big deal -- make a little joke about it. I've really found humor to smooth over a lot of awkwardness.

It's kind of fun to be the center of attention for a bit.

I am fine with it but my skin is not, I get all red and splotchy, lol. I usually just wear a turtle neck!

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yep. Doesn't really bother me. I do have to prepare before hand- if it's something that is sprung on me with no prior notice, I will get a little nervous.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yes, I do have the nerve.

I'm a teacher, so I think it goes with the general territory, but I've always been comfortable speaking in front of large audiences, anyway. I coached the high school speech team when I taught high school, and those speech team kids were so impressive. Their speaking skills were amazing.

I'm actually waiting to hear back on a proposal to speak at a national convention for my subject, and I'm currently writing another proposal to speak at a European convention. Here's hoping I get the opportunity!

Speaking, singing...no problem.
I'm a self-admitted ham.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

No, I'm horrible at it. I can know the information that I am presenting backwards and forwards, and it doesn't matter. I always get nervous and forget what I'm saying. I am great at writing papers and taking tests, but don't make me give a speech! :)

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

I have bad stage fright. I gave a reading at a friend's wedding and my sister's wedding, and I was terified the whole time. I've never felt comfortable speaking to a crowd.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Hell no. I get extreme anxiety if I have to speak in front of people.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yes. It is easy when you know what you are talking about.

I'm with Jas on this one. I love speaking to large audiences. I've delivered speeches to audiences of 25-1,800 and loved every second of it. I feel very comfortable on stage behind a microphone, and once the initial rush of adrenaline is over and I have to stop reminding myself to slow down, I feel very at ease.

I also do theater, so that helps!

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yes, I am a complete attention whore who feels most comfortable in front of large audiences or on stage.

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

If I am well prepared and confident, then I can do it. I still get nervous, though!

Re: do you have the nerves to speak in front of a big audien

Yup. I was in debate through high school and then in speaking/leadership positions throughout college for big groups, so I got used to it.
