I am a lowly ASN (nursing), but I earn the same amount of $$ as my BSN/MSN co-workers, and I had waaaay less owed in student loans (7K vs. up to 80K!). If there were incentive for me to get my BSN I would, but right now we're having kids and working on the house, and I really have no desire to go back to school. Once we're done having kids I think I'll go back, though! I know a lot of hospitals aren't even hiring ASN nurses anymore!

Pretty much the only reason I got my BSN was because they won't even consider hiring an ASN nurse, although I think so many of them know much more than BSN's.

I should've said 'I HAVE a lowly ASN'... it's bugging me that I missed my edit window!

I've been absent from PS for a while - I think the last time we 'talked' you had just finished school. Aren't you in the Philly area? Where did you end up getting a job? Yes, now a BSN is a must. I got hired at my hospital the last year they were hiring ASN nurses (6 years ago), now it's BSN only. I think all the major hospitals are. I will definitely have to go back to school if I ever want a job elsewhere (which I'm sure I would).

Graduating in a few weeks! Gotta pass my NCLEX :)

I actually am really bummed about getting a job right now because the Philly job market is so insanely saturated. It's miserable and I'm not sure what I'm gonna do at this point. Might just have to suck it up and work at a nursing home (which I was very resistant to doing). We'll see. I just hope I get a job and I like it.

That is rather shocking, there is still a large shortage here.
One of my friends clients has been looking for a nurse for his office for 3 months now and my niece is a LPN and is getting dozens of calls from recruiters a month.
The larger hospitals prefer RN with BSN but they cant get enough of them.

Ha, I WISH there was a shortage here. I've really lost all hope that I'll get a hospital job at this point, or a job at all for a while.

Yes.

BA in Applied Arts and Sciences with an emphasis in Interior Design. I'm applying for graduate school soon for a Master's in Administration with an emphasis in Project Management.

AN - the extern that my hospital wouldn't hire just got a job at Brandywine Hospital. Sure, it's not a major city hospital, but he got hired straight into the ICU (which is difficult to get here in the city without experience). So, if you're willing to look into smaller community hospitals, there are still jobs to be gotten. But it does suck how saturated the market here is now. We've lost like 5 nurses on our unit alone and they haven't filled their spots d/t the hiring freeze (budget constraints, I think). Lots of luck on the NCLEX!!! I remember how stressful it was.

Thank you!!! Thankfully the pass rate for my program is 98% so I should be ok hopefully!

I've actually been looking at hospitals within a 45 minute radius and applying to them and I still haven't gotten anything back :(

I'd prefer to work at a smaller hospital anyways...not into the big ones at all.
