Hi Charbie

Water can taste differently depending on how aerated it is (fresh tap water vs water that has been sitting overnight) I bet your kitchen tap aerates the water more.

I don''t filter water either (my city recently bought a top quality $30million new water treatment plant), but I do drink a lot of unsweetened herbal tea which adds flavour - I strongly dislike plain water bottled or otherwise.

Good luck!
AHA! I never knew that! now that i think about it, the water coming from the kitchen will have bubbles on the cup that form if it sits for a few minutes. that never happens with the water from the bathroom. It has to be what effects the taste...thanks for the info!

oh- and lucky you for the city caring about the water!

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE REPLIES!
i guess there are a lot of options out there that i never knew about. i think we''ll go with something under the sink, since we have a pretty shallow sink, and never enough room in the fridge (DH buys lots and lots of gallons of milk at a time that take up a ton of room).

i appreciate all the information! and who knew we all are so sensitive about water :)

i remember living in switzerland we had one of those systems to turn the water into "mineralwasser"- basically bubbly water. it took me forever to get used to, but i LOVED it.

Seriously MC, I want info too, that sounds like a great system!!!
Okay, I've ordered the filters and for the membrane and the carbon (both need to be replaced every six months - depending upon how much water you drink) from fastfilters, they're together approx. $75. They always have $5.00 off coupons.

I just tried checking the model number of the one we have and unfortunetly it's blocked by our garbage disposal (lol) so I'm not 100% this is the model number - it is GE Smart Water. . .

However, I can show you what it looks like.

It's either this one or similar. . .

The site says it's at home depot, but their online site shows a slightly different one for $279 - ETA - same model # so they must have changed the set up slightly. . .

Seems like a lot of money, but keep in mind, we've had this since before my 9 year old son was born. It's lasted THAT long!

If you have any specific questions, I can ask my DH. He's always installed it and changed the filters.

We have a PUR filter on our kitchen faucet and a Pur filter for the water / ice in our refrigerator. I can tell the difference.

Brita pitcher here. We also buy bottled water but not the same brand all the time.
